Gas grill, charcoal or smoker?

Summer is here and its time for burgers and dogs and brauts plus chicken and pork chops, among other foods. So what's your preference on how to cook them? I like gas grills, I love the flame and I can cook just about anything on one. Charcoal takes too long for me and a smoker, well, I've never used one. If I were to come over for some juicy burgers what would you be cooking them on?

Charcoal for me! Gas grills are, to me, like 'cheating', well, unless you have an electric range. If I want to turn a knob to cook something, I'll do it in the house. I've used both, and really prefer charcoal grills. I don't know why or what makes them special to me. I can't wait to read some of your other responses. Oh, I've never used a smoker, either.

I know with charcoal you can change flavors unlike gas grills, I just love the flame. Must be my boy scout upbrining.

I love the flavor of charcoal grilled food and so that is the only way for me. I've done plenty of camping and can cook quite a variety of foods on the grill. I have never even desired a gas grill. I have never used a smoker so I don't know. I know charcoal takes longer but for me, it is worth the wait.

Charcoal does taste better, I'll agree there, I just never have the time for it.

A charcoal barrel-type grill is how your juicy burgers will be cooked. I always close the lid as well so the smoke flavoring really gets into the meat while they are cooking. I don't like gas grills being they can explode any time. Happened to my brother and now he will never use a gas one again.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about your bro. I know gas is dangerous and I always take precautions when working with it. I had a barrel charcoal grill and it was great for burgers but I ditched it when I got a gas grill, never looked back.

Winter has just arrived here, but that doesn't mean the barbecue gets put away in the shed for several months. As long as the sun is shining, I can still throw on some snags and burgers, etc. I use a gas grill/barbecue, and find it's just so much cleaner and easier to control.

LOL, that's one thing I've never chucked on the barbie, is the prawns/shrimps. I'm too used to buying them already cooked.

I'm going to hold my tongue and not say, "Put a shrimp on the barbe". Oops! I did it, sorry. Winter is the best time to cook outside on the grill. Gotta get the snags and deadheads out so navigation of the river is safe. Happy grilling.

Personally, I like to cook with real Mesquite wood! I love the burgers, hotdogs, ;hot links, and bratwurst also! I love pork chops too, but the Dr. told me to cut down on them (I won't tell if you won't)! Yes, I love to barbecue outside, hook-up my Peavy amp, and Ibanez and turn it up and play! ps-By the way, do you play a "gitfiddle"?

Your burgers would be cooked on a gas grill. That is what we have been using for several years and we are happy with it.

Me too, gas is quicker to cook something. I'll be right over. :)

I have only ever cooked cover charcoal. I love the flavor that it gives the food. The only thing I don't like is how long it takes to get ready to cook on it.

Yea, that's my only peeve too. It does taste better than gas but the prep time is what slows me down.

In my house, you'd be finding that your burgers were cooked over wood. And although my hubby makes excellent burgers, you would be more likely to be served barbequed chicken if we were cooking on the grill.

Good day.. Just reading your tread as well as the responses made my stomach growl. yum yum. Well for me I prefer the natural. Charcoal or driftwood would do it perfectly, for one thing it leaves the gas out of the pan and off the barbecue that you usually smell and taste sometimes in gas-grilled meat, hotdogs etc. Secondly, I don't know if its just me but there is this mouth watering savory juice that mix with the barbecue using charcoal or driftwood and I can't taste it with gas-grilled or smoker prepared barbecue. That's why I really prefer charcoal and drift wood.

My fav is charcoal I love the flavor it lends to food. I know it isn't good for the environment but if I am going to grill outside it is charcoal all the way.

We've got a gas grill and I love it! It cooks the food really fast. I dont know if its just me but it seems like charcoal grills take forever to cook the food.

It does take forever with charcoal, you have to heat the briquettes up before you can cook. Gas, cook, done.

We have a gas grill. It's stainless steel and we love it! We cooked almost everyday on it during summer time. Very convenient to have when we have get togethers with friends and family. We have tried grilling using charcoal and I say that the results are different. Can't say which flavor is really better. Though I know that charcoal grilling needs a lot of clean-up afterwards. Happy grilling and enjoy the warm weather!

i prefer charcoal, but if i'm in a hurry,i'll use the propane one.i like the taste of charcoal better, but you're right,it does take too long sometimes.and if the briquets get humidity in them, even longer.

It has to be charcoal for me. If you use gas you might as well use the kitchen stove. All guys have a primitiv fascination with fire and it just seems to hit the right note that he is guardian of the flame and tands thre with spatula in hand ready to flip the burgers or roll the sausages. We love barbecues in our house but the UK weather is so unreliable we have to spot ou chances and almost have a barbie on the 'pur of the moment'. That is, if the rain holds off. Many's a time I've had to stand over the precious coals holding a large golf umbrella! Happy roastings.

I've done the golf umbrella too and later when I pulled it out on a rainy day I remembered the smell of food still in the fabric and started the grill up while it was raining. Guardian of the flame, love it, Fire! Fire! Oooo Ooooo!

Yes summer is here, and I can feel it..the heat that is. Well we like to cook with charcoal, I think it taste better than gas. We've never had good luck with gas grills because they cook too fast. No matter how low you turn down the flame your food will still burn. On Memorial Day, we had a cookout and my sister brought her gas grill, when they cooked the burgers the flame kept getting real high, I guess the grease was dripping in the fire, and the burgers were just burning, so we ended up with burnt burgers on the outside that weren't cooked all the way in the middle. With charcoal you can adjust your heat, just by the way you stack them in the grill. Thats what we like to use anyway. It works for us...

I'll admit that charcoal keep the heat while gas keeps the flame. Burnt burgers are a no no! But sometimes is happens, hope you'll let your sister cook again, pork chops or chicken on a gas grill works too.

I use either gas grills or charcoal as I have never used a smoker or heard of one for that matter. We only have a gas grill in our house, so I would use that to cook anything if I was at home, but if I am going down the beach or something and want a BBQ then I would buy one of the small tray BBQ that use charcoal.

I've done the small BBQ at the beach too, after a day in the sun we cooked on it and then warmed up by it. Good memories. I have a gas grill, I love the flame, can't deny it.

Gas. We have a charcoal grill that never got used because it's so slow to get going. We're not big on planning so when someone's hungry, better start cookin'! 20 minutes to have the grill burned off, fire down, etc. is just too long. My guy was adament that charcoal tasted better, until we got a gas grill. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the two. I do like that the gas grill is cleaner. Carcinogen output is lower, the smoke isn't as 'dirty', and it's a lot easier to clean the grill itself. We do use the smoker for pork chops, briskets, and other larger chunks of meat, but the gas grill gets our burgers, sausages, and chicken. Smoked meat is probably my favorite, but that's an all day project.

Love your garden and greens! Unless I plan a bar b cue I'll use charcoal but since I have two kids who might gnaw their arms off waiting for food, I opt for the gas grill too. Gas to me is cleaner, I turn it off and that's that. Charcoal, I have to wait and then dump it somewhere.

Prepare a girll for high heat. Combine the beed with bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, grated onion, garlic powder, and tomato juice. Shape the meat into 4 to 5 large patties. Sprinkle both sides of burgers lightly with seasoned salt and pepper. Put burgers on a lightly oiled grill over the prepared coals and grill for about 5 to 7 minutes on each side, or until done as desired. Serve on split toasted buns with your choice of sliced vegetables and condiments.
