I'm worried.....

My son came home from tutoring yesterday at 5:30. He seemed fine but he told me he had a headache. I gave him a small snack, a tylenol and suggested that he lay down for a bit, which he did. He woke up later just before diner and seemed better but a bit after diner he started complaining about a headache again. He took another tylenol at midnight. This morning he seemed to be fine when he woke up but later he complained about a headache again. I had to to go the eye doctor. WHen I came back we had lunch and he still had a headache. A strong one, it seemed. I got worried, his doctor does not work on saturdays but I felt maybe he should be seen, so I asked hubby to take him to the hospital. I know it's only a headache. HE didn't have any signs or a cold neither now or just a few days before. He had no runny nose, no sore throat or anything. But I tend to worry. I end up always thinking about the worse case scenarios grrrrr. In any case it's better safe than sorry and I'm glad I asked hubby to take him to the hospital when it seemed that he has some trouble touching his chin to his chest - you get the idea of what I'm worrying about right? Well, maybe I'm not completely crazy after all because the tests the doctors are taking at the hospital seem to tell me that they're thinking just as I am - he has some blood tests but also a CT scan. This is all I know so far. Hubby is still there with him and didn't call me back again, but I'm worrying.... Do you tend to always think about the worse case scenario when one of your children or loved ones are sick?

I know what you mean. I can't help it either. As soon as one of the kids is sick I start thinking about all the worse things. It doesn't help that I worked in hospitals before and that I did pick up on some of the things that can happen. A very wise person once told me something that makes a lot of sense" A little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing" It's so true :)

I still don't have any news. They're waiting for the results from both the blood tests and the cat scan. So far no spinal tap but it usually comes after the scan results if at all. ANd it doesn't mean much anyways, only the results do. I'll be back once I have more news.

Well the ct scan came back clear. But he still had the headache, so they still went ahead and did the lumbar puncture just to check. HOwecer the doctor said that was just as a precaution just to be sure, but he didn't really think that Andre has meningitis, not after the ct scan result. Now he will have to stay still for about an hour, meanwhile the results from the spinal tap will be back as well and we'll know for sure. Still they had to give him a stronger medication for the headache....we'll see.

Oh you poor thing, my son was admitted one time for meningitis, it was one of those gut feeling things more then he was really sick. But it was not meningitis, he had the doctors fooled, I think it was the fastest admission ever. I was told to take him straight to the pediatric ward, do not go to admissions, by the time we made the 20 minute drive to the hospital, they were ready and waiting. Two days later he was fine, they had no idea what it was but he had the rash and everything.

The first thing I looked for was the rash, but he had none at least when he left. they went on and did the spinal tap even after the ct scan came back normal just to make sure because he is still complaining with the strong headache and they gave him stronger medication, so now we have to wait until he can move back again and for the result of that as well. The doctor told hubby that he didn't think it was, but it was better to check everything just in case. For now, here I am waiting... it's scary but nothing else I can do.. Glad to hear that in your son's case it was a false alarm, I hope it is the same with mine. Hugs

Expect the best, but prepare for the worst. That is my motto. Excessive worry can be felt by the afflicted, so it is best to put on a cheerful demeanor, but that does not mean that one does not put everything else on hold. I do hope this does not turn out to be anything serious. Good luck, my friend.

it does sound like meningitis (maybe) but you're doing the right thing, getting all the test. plus whatever it is will be caught in time now. I kind of shut down when people get sick. autopilot?

Yes, as with everything, the sooner it's caught the better, but even though I know this, I'm still sitting here waiting and worrying:) My daughter just left work and went there to meet dad and her brother. She took him a sandwich because he said he was hungry and hubby couldn't find anything good in the machines at the hospital. Meanwhile I'm staying here with my mom and hoping that I get some news soon - good news preferably :)

I sometimes think of the worst case scenarios. Not all the time but more often then I should. I hope your son ends up being fine and there's nothing to worry about. It's a good thing you got him to a hospital to get him checked just in case. It's our mom instints lol it usually leads us right. Good luck.

THanks :) Even though I tend to look for the worst case scenario, I'm still hoping that there is nothing seriously wrong and that he is fine. But as you say it was better to have it checked just in case. Now the worse part is waiting grrrr :)

When it comes to our children we need to take things like this seriously. Headaches are a symptom as is all pain. The fact that your son had trouble bending his head downward is serious. I firmly believe that it is better to be safe than sorry.

I do the same thing sometimes I worry so much that I get all worked up in my mind and I just have to stop and say to myself God will take care of my child. That makes me feel better and then usually everything works out ok. Best wishes, Amberina.

I think you did the right thing in haveing him go to the hospital. From the way you described the headache comeing and going like it was that's sounds more seriouse and better to be safe than sorry and have it checked out like you had him do. I hope with all the tests that they ran that they can determine what is wrong with him and do something about it. I wish him the best of luck and for you to that you may find out how you can care for his pain good luck and take care.

I do. I'm quite the worry wart just like you. I also get headaches sometimes... Could it be migraine? Sleeping doesn't help when your headache is caused by migraine. With migraine, no amount of pain killer or sleep takes the pain away. I've experienced it a few times before and the best way to take the pain away, is to vomit. Its like an instant medicine for migraine. (I'm not kidding) Hope your son gets better. :)

He could be worried about something and lying about the headache, it seems that this "headache" has been made to much of a big deal, Now I know I sound a wee bit sarcastic, but it could be, although I can't tell it or not I'm just another person giving pity online. -Sound

i think you are doing the right thing... headache is not something to be taken lightly especially if it occurs many times... it is better to be safe than sorry like you said... my parents also always take me to the doctor straight if i am sick for more than a day... it is better as it will be easier to cure the disease when it just started rather than when it gets worst... it will be much harder to cure it by then... i hope everything will be alright with your son and nothing serious happen to him... take care and have a nice day...

Sure I do worry. I also chalk it up to the fact that I really know how bad it can be. Glad you came on here to talk to us. I see this discussion was a day ago, so I am wondering what else you have learned, that you have not written some more. Or did I just miss it?

Worst case scenarios seem to be Mother's first instinct. A recurring or constant headache is nothing to pass off. It can mean any number of things from eye strain to nervous tension to. . .lets not even talk about what all else. It is always best to try to find the cause if the headache doesn't respond to regular treatment.
