Can one be a Christian and also be a witch?

I guess I should say study wica, not really sure a friend of mine that I know is christian, we used to go to church together is now exploring witchcraft, she says it is all for good and if it is for good it is for God. I'm a bit confused, she does believe in God, but she says God is the one that put the thpughts of witchcraft in her mind and she would only use it to the good and help nature and others? What are you thoughts on this? I am no judge, I believe there is only one who can do that, so please lets keep this nice, I'm just asking for opinions here and we are all entitled to them. Thanks :)

Actually I am a christian but I am very much interested in witchcraft. I believe that in many things we do , exploring is the great ways to discover new things and this one is really new and very much interesting for me. Withcraft are'nt that bad and I don't think it's against christianity particularly if we are just doing it for good. I'll say goodluck to your friend...

I too am christian, and most of what I have been learning seems wicca is all about nature and love, our world needs to get a little more into nature if one would as me so we can possible reverse some of the damage we have created. I'll tell her she has a goodluck from you :)

despite the fact that there are those who call themselves christian wicca or christian witch, christianity and wicca/witchcraft just don't match. although they may have certain things in common, the major beliefs are so different. and i'm not talking about good vs evil here, just completely different belief systems. they're like oil and water so to speak. it's understandable when someone of a certain religion is exploring other paths, they may not be ready to let go of their original religion. so it's like a transitional period or even a comfort zone for them to stand in 2 different places. however, eventually they will have to choose one or the other. otherwise they will experience conflicts in their life which is not desirable.

after reading some of the other responses i think you'll understand what i mean. for example, christianity (with the exception of a few denominations) believes that wicca (or anything other than christianity for that matter) is of the devil and all the followers will go to hell. to me it would be hard to be both a christian and a wicca. even if you may not believe this yourself, there may be family mambers and friends who do and would consider you a 'lost soul' for even exploring other paths and would do anything in their power to keep you from 'following the devil.' so there's another potential conflict.

awwww, so true, which could be why I asked here about my friend instead of going to a family member, knowing that could be their reaction, good point.I dont know if she has talked to her family members about it either, I'll have to check that out

Wouldn't those just be mental and spiritual conflicts? It seems they are both based on love and not harming another.

Hi goodhappens, I see nothing wrong with studying a religion other than one's own. Just because our parents were members of one religion when we were born, doesn't mean we have to stay with it. Christians and Muslims are always trying to make converts from other religions. In fact some Christians convert to Islam and vice versa. We all have the freedom to chose, and any religion that tells it's followers not to look at the teachings of another must be afraid that it's own teachings won't stand up to the light. Blessings.

Witchcraft and wiccan are totally different things. In fact, wiccan is connected to nature and is meant to love nature and all beings in there as a whole and also to respect them. Chrisitinity cut all that off and also developped the concept of evil. In fact, it becomes notorious on the new testament, but its hardly ever mentioned in the old testament. Christianity did a lot of wrong to the world in general. And basically the classify as "evil work" pagan rituals like the sabbath, which were basically old rites of fertility, nothing to do with evil or god. Jesus said to love all things as equal (remember the passage with the flowers). Christianity tells us to love human beings, but has no regard for other entities within the world and also. its based in fear and its only good when people share the same faith, those that don't are "barbaroi", barbarians from the Ancient Greek. Maybe you too should reconsider your beliefs.

I will always believe in God, he has carried me thru many situations that I know I would not have been able to do on my own, but I am expanding my knowledge and looking at other views, keeping my mind open.

Hopefully this does not sound rude. Everyone has their own opinion, and here's mine. Wicca is a wonderful religion. From what I've studied Wiccans are all about peace and their connection with the earth. I personally don't believe in "God". I am an American Indian, so I am very spiritual and my beliefs are similar to Wicca. But to say that "God" put the thoughts of witch craft in her mind is the wrong thing to say, you make your decisions, not "God". The reason I put quotations around the word "God", is because everyone has their own version of "God".

that is very true, and I told her God gave us free will and that is where the thoughts came from, her own choice. Either way, it sounds like its a very peaceful and loving faith, so I will just support her :) and no you dont sound rude :)

I am a witch, not a wiccian, they are totally different and yes I believe that people are able to believe in both but it would be really hard to claim both. One would leave you living as a hypocrite because in Christianity you can only have one God and no others, witches and Wiccian believe in many Gods and Goddesses. I will not call myself a Christian because I'm unwilling to live according to the rules of the religion. I personally choose not to name or give a face to the Gods and Goddesses I trust in, all except Hecate who has called me personally. Beyond that they are all the same. I grew up in a Christian Church and learned many valuable things there to help guide my life and my morals, being a witch, which I have always been did not change the lessons I learned because they intertwine together and have become stronger as I have gotten older and wiser.

Your right. I was wrong to lump everyone into one category. Shows what happens with I post while distracted :). To clarify what many means to me, each area, culture has/had their own set of Gods and Goddesses that they worshiped. Some only one, but most if memory serves right had more than one. I personally believe in a higher power that has both male and female aspects of it but I choose not to put a name or face to that power. IMO that limits the power. The only Goddess that I have ever named is Hecate after she called me, loudly. I never knew Wicca existed until in high school but I have always been a witch, knew it from the time I was a very young child. Never had a day of formal teaching, but guidance when I was younger wouldn't have been a bad thing. Mostly because what I need comes to me as I need it, but I'm loving the reference books the library has and I have dog eared a few of them LOL.

Its found in revelations, that those who practice witchcraft and related things are not for christians like us. If she is a christian and still practices those then, she is a questionable christian. I guess she still have footholds of the devil in her life and that there should be bondage breaking to keep her away from those things, coz witch craft is not for the Lord, when we become christians we have been made new creations, the old has gone and the new has come from the Bible 2 corinthians 5:17.

I know she still believes in God so I'm thinking he hasnt given up on her so maybe if i just ask her some questions, I have already asked her if she still believes in God and she said of course he guides her life. so I'm not really sure where she stands.

"5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" I must ask what you think this verse has to do with the wiccan faith. I preacher friend of mine has the Gift of sight. he sees things to come and uses his gift for the betterment of humanity. Many of his fellow preachers see his "gift" as the work of satan, for no man should see as God. Yet, if a human life can be spared, how can this be the work of evil? Likewise, a spiritual path that commands no harm be done to any, cannot be called the work of evil? What say you?

Witchcraft is something that can be practiced by anyone of any religion, a bit like carpentry or painting. it's an activity, and not a religion, although sometimes it is practiced within a religious context. often Pagan, but not always. back in the day, when most people were Christian, most Witches would have been Christian too. there's no reason why a Christian would be less able than anyone else. so long as they can personally make peace between their practice, and what the book about their religion says about the practice, then that's fine. I've known Pagans who beleive in Jesus as their version of the dying and resurrecting Sun God, born at Solstice and sacrificing himself for the well being of his followers. sound familiar? but I've known normal, bog standard average Christians who are also very fine Witches.

Thanks' Peace and smiles :)

No, you can't be a witch because subjects like witchcraft and voodoo and also psychic abilities have all been proven to be psychological trickery. Even voodoo dolls for example - yes, they do work! But only because the person it is working on believes and is expecting it to work. Take away those beliefs and it won't work any more!
• United States
21 Jun 08
that is the whole reason they are beliefs, I understand voodoo but wouldnt a psychic be a god given talant, isnt that what the profits did, told what the future had in store for us? so couldnt the psychic be the modern day profit? just wondering?

Witchcraft, voodoo and psychic abilities don't really have any place in the Wiccan religion, so whether or not they are trickery doesn't have much bearing on whether someone should be a Wiccan. If you read the other answers to this question, you'll see that Wicca is a very peaceful religion which respects nature and other human beings, and it has successfully existed for thousands of years without any of the beliefs that you mention!

I would say that something put the thoughts of witchcraft in her mind but I doubt it was God. Since the old testament clearly stated that the children of Israel have nothing to do with witches. Even the New Testament speaks clearly on the practice of witchcraft. The God of the bible says to have no other gods before him and I figure that includes goddesses. So from a biblical stand point I dont see how the two faiths are compatible.

I would say it was more freewill, we all think things and it depends on wether we act on them or not. She really likes the principals of wicca, but I would say she is still a christian but is just looking at mother earth in a more caring way now, which in all honesty is also chirstian, lol as I told her it never hurts to explore and learn, this way our minds are more open and non judgemental which this world needs alot more of if one was to ask me, hehe Peace and smiles

I have a good friend who is Wiccan and her beliefs are very different from Christian beliefs. She believes in the God and the Goddess and that everything in nature is spiritual. Wicca is not the witchcraft with magic spells that you see in movies or read about in books. They have rituals but, in the 10 years that I've know her, I've never seen any magic. She does believe though that what you do, good or bad, comes back to you three fold so Wicca does promote goodness and generosity.

i dont think you can, well im not an expert when it comes to this kind of topic, im not an expert on any topic come to think of it, but i think christianity teaches that there is such a thing as evil spirits and that men should be careful and discerning when trying to dabble with things that are spiritual, the bible even said that the devil himself can make himself appear as a being of holiness if he wants to to men, im not an expert on wica also, i know very little about it, the little that i know about it ive heard it from discussions such as this, what im trying to say is that, wica sets no boundaries on things spiritual, wica encourages spiritism the bible teaches any spiritual curiousity or yearning or whatever should be directed towards god, im not really a hardcore devout believer of christianity but if what it is saying is true, then on wica you are dealing with things that are beyond your control things that might be not as it appears to be, things that you are unknowingly inviting to yourself, im not saying that wica practioners will someday get possesed by an evil spirits like the way those exorcism movies show, but like everything else in life, things that you believe in will have an influence on you, an ifluence on your thoughts then on your actions, again if what the bible is saying is true, then wican might be getting their spiritual influences from something else other than god, then if they are, then they are dealing with things they should not have start dealing with, things that might poison if it wants to how the wican looks at life, and we have alot of worldly things that are like that already, dont we, why take the risk of adding one from a diferent realm, this is funny, a diferent realm, boo, scary, but seriously if what the bible says about the spirit world is true, then wicans might be in deep sh*t already without them quite fully knowing it yet

ok and wow, I hadnt even thougtht of the different realm thing and getting into that. that would be sad to be raised one way to find that it is not at all what you think it is, because all i have heard about wicca is they believe in love, and doing no harm to man or nature. I think that God wants us all to have different religions so he can accomplish different things in this earth. I may be wrong tho it has been know to be that way many times before :)

your question was can one be a christian and be a wiccan also, i gave you what christian says about those things, they were not my views, me personally i dont practice anything spiritual, do you really need to have a religion to learn how to love, come on, your kid is only practicing that just to be in a fad, you see to you people it needs to be fashionable and cool too, yeah right, that aint belief

No, one really cannot be Christian AND Wiccan. However there is nothing wrong in exploring other religions. Just because you read a book doesn't mean you believe or practice everything in it. What REALLY frustrates us Wiccans are those who try and say we are devil worshipers. That is so ridiculous. First off, the devil is a Christian thing - its only in your books like the Bible. Secondly, since we don't believe in the devil, we certainly would'nt worship him. Wicca is a very peaceful, nature oriented, animal loving, earth saving type of religion. We believe in doing no harm to others.

Raven, I sat here reading your post and tried to decide just how to answer it in a short paragraph here. I'm not sure I can do that. I do know that we don't believe in just the male God. I also know that the Christian Bible recommends killing witches. This would make it extremely difficult to be both Christian and Wiccan. We also don't have commandments that we must follow. Simply put "harm none" is the way we live. We also know that if we do cause harm that it can come back to us threefold. I attempted to post a link here that can describe all of this better than I ever could. However apparently mylot won't let me list the link, so all I can suggest is that if you still have questions that you research further online. There are many wonderful websites out there to help you. Hopefully my groggy morning answer here makes a bit of sense. LOL

You most certainly CAN be both...the bottomline is this..a persons relationship with god IS PERSONAL...ANY religious or spiritual path one walks IS PERSONAL...so if you or anyone feels that in your heart and soul its okay to be both then be both....I have a very close friend who is Pagan AND Roman Catholic...She has talked to god about it and she knows in her heart its ok with him... NOBODY can tell anyone else what is or isnt acceptable when it comes to walking a spiritual or religious path because they aretn that person...

I see no harm in being a Christian and studying Wicca. I am a Christian but I am interested in Wicca because that is what my daughter has chosen as her religion. I want to know more about it so I can understand her choice. That doesn't mean that I love God any less or that I am doing anything wrong. That is why we have a mind. So we can learn and continue to grow.

I believe that is also why he gave us free will. You are a very good mom to explore what your daughter is doing w/o judgement. I think one of my neices was looking into wicca many years ago and her parents passed it on to her as it was a phase and they hoped she would grow out of it soon.
20 Jun 08
Many strict Christians would say that wicca isn't part of their world. Though I would say respecting nature shouldn't really mean you are no longer a Christian. That's what I think wicca is- correct me if I am wrong...

At the moment I'm lost for words on what to tell your friend, so keep us posted. If I can think what to say to help your friend, I'll come back and comment. Good Luck and God Bless! Dear goodhappens: sadly but true you can't. A Christian is not a person who says to be Christian, or who attends church or reads the Bible, not even a person who wants to do good. A Christian is a person who lives according to Jesus Christ's will. And his example excludes any other thing. To be a Christian means accepting God's proposals and dispositions and not to adore, sacrifice an practice rites dedicated to spiritual powers, whoever they are and whatever good you are meaning. Only God knows what is good and can determine what is good for us.

greetings, no. it is not possible to do both. the deeper she gets into that the stronger she will be pulled away from GOD. it is written in different passages throughtout the Holy Bible! if YOU are a true friend you need to rescue her. that sounds dramatic, its not. its just how deep this truth goes. she doesn't realize where this will take her---she could lose her Soul for all eternity! SAVE her! how? You get on your knees and intercede on her behalf. daily offer your Prayers, Sufferings, Good Works for her Soul. how long? as long as she's involved with this SATANIC practice. that's exactly what it is. she doesn't know it, you must act on her behalf. she doesn't even need to know you're doing this for her. maybe better if you don't tell her, she won't resist it if she doesn't know you're doing this. consider asking the MOTHER of GOD to assist you in saving her Soul. think about this: JESUS would never refuse anything HIS MOTHER asks for! if HE did all HE did and went through to save us, won't HE do even more for HIS own MOTHER?
