What is going on with all the weird potato chip flavors?

There are so many weird flavor combinations out today, I had to move "Pickled Pigs Feet" and "Sea Salt" bags aside just to get a regular bag of Doritos so I could dip them in Picante Sauce. I cannot get into these new flavors. Do you like them? Is there no end to the madness? What's next, "Pepper and Concrete", "Styrofoam and Toothpaste"?

There certainly seems to be a lot of different ones out there, that's for sure! I don't eat Doritos very often, preferring Munchos potato chips but lately I have tried a couple of bags of Doritos new flavor called Spicy Sweet Chili. They're actually quite tasty :)

Now that combo is okay, its all these freaky flavors that cause me to wrinkle my nose in disgust. Munchos are awesome, I usually get more air than chips, but its all good.

Oh frankie, I can't let this one go. If I wanted sea salt I would dive into the ocean and fill my tummy with the dehydrating effects it brings. Do you eat them straight or do you dip them in salt too?

hehe - why would I dip my crisps in salt? lol It is the same as eating salt and vinegar but saltier! Mmmmmmm!

pringles - pringles chips
ha ha funny, sure makes you wonder though what they will come up with next in the flavors for sure.. I love the Pringles though over really anything out there I will eat Doritos too the cheese and cool ranch ones.. I am not into the other kind either.. I'd hate to buy them and than throw them away cause they don't taste right..

I love Pringles too! Its funny, since we live in the moutains all the cans of Pringles are bloated because of the altitude (9600 feet) and the little plastic lids are all over the floor at the market, talk about popping when you open them. BOOOOM!

HAhahahahaha Thanks for the laugh. I don't understand the new laours either. I have not seen the ones that you mentioned, but I wouldn't be surprised if your suggested new flavours were the next onces to hit store shelves. People will buy just about anything!!!

You're right they will. Maybe I should send those twisted flavors in so they can test them on some drooling subjects.

We made the mistake of buying one of the mystery bags of Doritos. I'm pretty sure it's Fruit Loop flavored. And I'd say I'm just kidding, but seriously, it tasted like lime fruitiness. Not what I wanted in terms of chips. :(

Fruit loops? Oh my goodness! Why don't they just leave chips alone? :)

That is exactly what I said when I tried the Mystery Doritos. They taste like Fruit Loops! I thought that they were gross. The weird experiment ones that they had last summer were cheeseburger flavored. They were not good either.

I can tell you I'd never want to try the "Pickled pigs feet". I have more than enough to choose from with the salty ones, with paprika, salt and pepper, or sour cream and onion. Or onion and cheese. Or with olive oil and herbs. Pickled Pigs feet.

I can do the sour cream and onion but man, the rest of these flavors. It reminds me of those goofy stickers that had weird food combinations on them, I think they were in the back of Mad Magazine. Maybe the potato chip companies took a cue from them.

Yes it does. Do they seriously think two good things will still be good when you combine them? Wonder how long the pig taste will be around for

"Pickled Pigs Feet"? Not kiddings? Here we have a few flavors such as onion, masala, and tomato, but never heard of Pigs Feet. And potato chips are costly here, so I hardly buy them. Cheers and happy mylotting

How about swamp water with garlic. Cats feet and tomato paste? Sound great to me especially the cats who are in door cats and use a cat box.

Ack, I'll pass on the Styrofoam and Toothpaste, thank you. The last one I tried was Jamaican Jerk, but they were too salty. Otherwise delicious though. I think it is all an excuse to charge 4 times what they are worth.

I know what you mean. Seasalt is actually not new and is pretty good. I work in a convenience store and so I see and get to sample some of the new flavors. Some are just downright nasty. some...don't sound appetizing enough to even make me want to try them. I'm a chip lover and to be honest most of those new flavors are just really bad and not worth the money they are asking. Chip prices have gone thru the roof lately. I'll stick to those that i know I love.

Yeah, they are coming with weird stuff like that all the time. Have you seen these new Doritos? I think they are called Quest. The thing is it doesn't say on the bag what flavor it is, you have to try to guess what it is. I tried some at a friends house, and they weird tasting, kinda salty, and sweet, and had some kind of fruit lemony flavor...it was weird. You'll have to try those too..lol.

Hahaha! I want "complete turkey dinner flavor"!!! I doubt they'll ever make them, but they might! I agree with you. Regular and barbeque are all that is ever required as far as potato chips go! My husband loves the "so hot you'll end up in the hospital" flavors, and my son loves the pickle flavored ones, as well as the crab flavored ones. Yuck! Styrofoam and toothpaste, huh? Hmmmm...

Give em' time mental, it might happen. Does your hubby have any taste buds left? I can't do the pickle flavor, too gross. Crab?! And I thought I lived in odd town.

Well, I came from Maryland, known for it's steamed crabs. I guess that's why we have crab flavored potato chips. Actually, they're more like "Old Bay" flavored, because that's what they're steamed in. Now, crab flavored cookies... that would be going WAY too far! LOL

I really hope you were kidding about the pickled pigs feet chips. That sounds so gross. I have tried several of the newer flavors of chips that have come out. Most of them I did not like.

I tried the Spicy Sweet Chili ones yesterday. To me, most of the flavors don't have much difference in taste. Like you said, if I want a picante flavor, I'll just dip them in picante sauce. I guess Doritos is just seeing which flavors are the most popular (like Mountain Dew is currently doing with its new flavors.)

The weirder the taste the more my son likes it. I think it goes back to before he had his tonsils out and couldn't taste anything. For me, I like plain. No funky flavors. Not even cheese or barbecue. Just plain.

My mom used to own property off of Old 7 Highway in Olathe. If I even mentioned Jayhawk around my daughter, she'd give me evil looks. It's K-State or nothing. She even has a K-State Cat tattoo on her ankle. LOL

All the chips manufacturers are trying to come out with the next best thing and sometimes that means coming out with really strange things. You just never know what th next big thing is going to be. You also have to remember that a weird flavor to you does not automatically constitute a weird flavor to someone else. I mean, look how long Pork Rinds have been around? People eat them! So the manufacturers keep making them. I know that with Doritos, most of the time, they are running a contest. They put several flavors out at a time and then have consumers vote on their favorite flavors and compare this to sales. The flavor that gets the most votes and also shows an increase in sales, is generally the flavor that is kept and put on the shelves permanently. The last time around, my favorite flavor got the boot! But, it also seems to be a disease that is spreading to other grocery items. Sodas are becoming more and more complex with flavors, yogurts, flavored waters, cereals, ice creams, puddings, salsas... it's out of control! I understand why it's getting to that point, but it doesn't make it any easier to make a decision about anything.

I know exactly what you mean. Doritos and all of there mystery flavor BS. I tried one of those so called mystery bags and it tasted like they took the flavor remains of all there chips added them together and put it on a chip. Disgusting! If I want to spluge on junk food I wanna taste flavors that I love not eat there garabage.

I still live in Florida and luckily, I can still obtain the normal flavors. At least for now. It will be a sad day when I can no longer get my Cool Ranch Doritos. I already eat less of them than I did before since they aren't a very healthy snack, but to not have the option of eating them at all... that would just be horrible.

Pretty soon the staples will be gone and we'll have to eat the ones that taste weird because that's the only choices we'll have. We lived in Florida and they never carried plain Doritos, when we moved to New Mexico we saw them in the stores and acted like it was an oasis. We bought 4 bags, just in case.
