I have a rant ....

I have a big time rant this morning. Since I have never flown I am not sure if this is an every day thing that happens or not. My daughter and grandson flew out last sunday to an airport in Baltimore, they flew on American Airlines. They made the trip there fine and had a great flight. Her husband is working in New Jersey and met them there and they have had a real full and tireing week and headed back here today MAYBE. This is where my rant comes in. My daughter, son in law and grandson spent the night in Baltimore last night closer to the airport so they could get their and fly out at 6am their time. They got there in plenty of time and the place was crowded and lines not moving much at all. She moved over to the self check-in and the lines were even slower and no employees helping the ones who needed help. Needless to say because of all the holdup they missed their flight and was put on standby, missed that one also due to one seat not enough. She is now waiting another 3 hours to see if they can get them on another flight out. She has no idea where her luggage is, it will probably get here hours before she does. If they get on the next flight out they will have been 5 1/2 hours waiting and that is longer than it takes to get from Baltimore to DFW in Tx. to my city where they are coming. Have any of ya'll had this much trouble trying to get home from a trip via air plane when you had your round trip tickets bought way in advance, at the airport in plenty of time and not able to get on the flight when you have done nothing wrong?

I haven't flown in years but if this is a regular occurrence something needs to be done. If that had been me i would STILL be complaining to whoever was in charge at that airport-he would have chartered us a plane just to shut me up-that is ridicolus, i do understand that airlines are laying people off but it seems like they would have enough sense to keep enough people to take care of their customers!

I am very surprised that my daughter didn't go off on them, guess she is just too tired. She had also already sent her husband off so he could drive back to New Jersey and get rested up for work. I sure pity the people in Dallas at DFW is they mess with her there after what she has already been through. As far as I know American Airlines has not laid off many in that dept. yet but who knows. She will get in touch with the airlines she said. They are almost at DFW right now then have to wait over an hour for their flight out to here. They should be here in just over 3 hours and should have been here at my house already. Thank you for your response and have a great day.

Your daughter, son-in-law and grandson must be really fed up with waiting around at the airport. Last week I flew back to my home country from Latvia. I got to the airport with plenty of time to spare. My flight didn't have a check in counter for ages. There was a very long line of passengers waiting to check in for their flight to Dublin. A long line of passengers started at desks 4, 5 and 6 ready for when these desks would open. So the lines were very slow and I imagine in such a situation it is easy to miss your flight. When I came to the airport to fly to my home country from Israel each traveler was having an interview before being allowed to check in. The questions were challenging and made me feel nervous. I was taken to a private room and the officials searched all of my luggage in fine detail. It took more than an hour and a half. Afterwards they said sorry when they realized I was just an innocent traveler. However I only just made it to check in before the desk closed. Needless to say I didn't get a good seat position in the plane. One time Customs and Excise did a detailed search of the plane before it flew off to the Caribbean. That meant my flight was delayed for four hours. Another time my flights into French Polynesia and the Cook Islands arrived in the middle of the night so I just had to hang around the airport until the morning. So for various reasons I have spent many hours waiting around airports but I have never missed a flight.

Oh my, you have had a few bad experiences at airports also it sounds like. It is just my daughter and my grandson, my son in law had to stay behind for work. He is working in New Jersey until September and had a week off so they flew up there for vacation with him. She called me a little while ago and finally got her tickets and they should be taking off about now. I forgot to ask her if she found her luggage or what they did with all of it. I just find that it is horrible when you have round trip tickets and are there way before check in time as they ask you to and you still get booted off your flight. Thank you for responding and I hope all your flights in the future go smooth and with no problems.

Personally, I've never had this situation happen when I fly. Have heard of others who have these issues on a pretty regular basis. Think it depends on the airlines. All airlines overbook flights just to make sure the flight is full. Hopefully their luggage will arrive safely and placed in an area at the airport where it is protected until they get to their final destination. The last few years I've flown Southwest and I can only say they are the very best airlines. Although I realize they don't fly everywhere, they do go to Phoenix which is our destination. They are always on time, sometimes early, the flight attendants are good and the flights are smooth. I've been extremely satisfied with their service. Sorry your daughter had all these problems at the airport and with the airline. Have a good Sunday, carolbee

Thank you for responding. This is her first time to experience this kind of thing and she has flown quite a few times. This is just my grandson's 2nd time to take a trip on a plane and his first experience with things not going smoothly so he is needless to say a little irritated and tired. When they left out from here last sunday morning they had no problems at all. This is her first time flying on AA, she also flies Southwestern when she can. I also hope their luggage makes it safely. They left with one bag plus one carryon and had to buy more luggage and coming back with 3 and 2 carryons so she has bought many souveiners to bring back home with her. I should hear back from her in just over 30 minutes to see if they get on the next flight out. Keeping my fingers crossed. She sounded so tired already and that was over 2 hours ago last time I talked to her. Have a great day.

Hi my friend, I know they must be so angry, 5 1/2 hours I would be crazy mad. This is a shame what they are putting them through. What is the latest now, are they still in Baltimore?

Thank you for your concern and your reply. Yes, they are still in Baltimore right now. The next flight out will be just under an hour from now so I should hear something from her in the next 30 minutes or maybe a little longer. She is too tired right now to be too angry but if they don't get on this next flight her temper will come out I'm sure. They have had such a busy week and they are both give out and just want to get back to my house.

I am what is known as a road warrior. This means that on average I spend at least 35 weeks out of the year traveling, sometimes a bit more sometimes a bit less. I have done this for more than 15 years. I am a million miler on 2 airlines (American and Delta) and close on Northwest and United. Believe me when I tell you that the last two years have been the worst I have ever seen. This year has really been the worst in part because of the cost of fuel and the reduction of available seats. The airlines are cutting the number of planes in the air. But there are some things you can do that aren't well known. Going off on someone doesn't help and it is liable to get you arrested. 1. Print your boarding pass the day before. If you have bags you have to check you can still print your boading pass the night before then you either check the bags at the curb or you self-check inside. Keep in mind that some airlines now charge for even the first bag checked so if you can don't check a bag at all! 2. Do not believe that 2 hours are enough time at any busy airport. It no longer is enough time unless you are flying first class or have elite status. Even then call ahead. Not all airports have elite status security lines. If you are checking bags or need any other assistance at the ticket counter 2 hours will barely be enough time to get to your gate. 3. No matter how tempting it is to fly standby and save a few dollars.....DON'T. There is no such thing as standby seating anymore on the airlines. They oversell every seat. If you are trying to fly cheap that is fine but fly the cheapest reserved seat. 4. Always use the self-check in if you are able. If you find yourself in a line with 45 minutes or less to catch your flight start looking for someone in a uniform to get you to the front of the line. don't assume that you will make it. Start asking for help. Even ask the people in front of you if they will let you get in front if they don't have a flight earlier than you do.

You sure do have a whole bunch of miles traveled. Some very good advice and suggestions you have given. Oh she didn't lose her temper at all and she and my grandson did not have standby tickets. She reserved her tickets in advance and had no problems at all last week getting there, it was just getting home. They spent over 14 hours in airports and in the air for just a 4 1/2 hour flight. The main thing is they are here now safe and sound and give out. My grandson did not sleep any today she said. Oh yes, their luggage made it here on the first flight out that they were supposed to have been on, so it has been sitting in a room all day at the air port here, but like I told her, at least it is here and not lost or no telling where. haha Thank you for responding and for all the helpful hints. I will pass them on to her for the next time she flies.

Glad that the family finally made it home. I threw the two pieces of general advice just in case others read (temper and standby) not specific to your sister.

I've never had that problem, but I'm not surprised. There are so many flights being cancelled these days and security is a pain to get thru. The last time I flew was in 2005 and I got there so darn early I was the first there for the flight. LOL I was afraid it might take a long time to check in. I hope your family gets to where they are going soon. Waiting that long for a flight would be so hard on me, I don't think I could do it.

This is the first and probably the last time that my daughter has flown American Airlines. The flight was real nice both ways it was just the hassle of getting home that was a pain. They are here now and both asleep. My grandson will be staying with us for some of the remaining summer and she will stay here a few days to rest up. Thank you for your response.

My daugther and grandson was there way early before flight time. I don't think she reported it just complained to the people at the airport. She has flown once since then but she made sure she didn't use the same airline and she had no problems at all. Thank you for responding and have a great weekend.

I wish I had known about it earlier, I could have gone up and hung out with them - BWI is about 20 minutes from here. We always fly out of BWI and I've never had that happen to me. Now, when I left Miami last May, I flew American Airlines and the whole checkin things was horrible! We were at the airport about 3 hours early and it was a darned good thing! It took us over an hour to find the checkin place and get checked in. The "self service" thing is a total joke, I wont use it again. I have also flow various airlines that purposefully overbook and then ask people if they want to wait for a later flight - with some comp tickets of course. That really gets to me because if I'd have wanted a different flight, I would have booked it!! I hope your daughter and grandson have gotten home!

I'm sure she would have enjoyed the company. My son in law had already gone back to New Jersey so he could get ready and rested up for work in the morning. They are here now finally, both give out after being up and going through all of that hassle all day. Their luggage made the first flight out, the one they were supposed to have been on. She said next time she will not go to BWI or at least not fly out of there back to Texas. hahaha Thank you for responding.

I have not flown in a while but I have heard that American is not one of the better ones as far as getting any where one time. The TSA and the FAA have a lot of problems. Eventually it may come down to regulating the airlines again to get all this mess corrected.

They need to do something. My daughter said it was a good thing they weren't going to Tulsa, Okla. because there were 36 people on standby. That is uncalled for. Thank you for responding. Have a great day.

Oh wow, what an ending to a good trip! I have never had that happen when I bought my round-trip tickets in advance. I think they owe her at least a partial refund, but knowing Misty, I'm sure she will be contacting them about this, lol. Of course I have never flown AA, but I never had that problem on Delta or Continental. That's the whole purpose of buying tickets ahead of time, to avoid the hassles. I'm glad they had a good trip, wish we could have met up for a little while. Hope they get home soon.

They landed around 6pm yesterday evening. I am not sure if she will contact them and complain or not, I know I would. Yep a long day for them yesterday. Before, the other times she went, she just bought one way since John was finished with the job and they would do some sight seeing at places then drive back so she and Tyler had a blast getting to spend a whole week doing what they all wanted to do. Like you say, too bad it had to end that way. Her luggage got here at 10something yesterday morning like they should have.

I have never had any problems....but I don't usually go during a holiday. There is so much going on now with the airlines that I imagine there was an overbooking! I have went right before and after a holiday.....without any problems at all. Hope they made it alright!

I always try to get to the airport at least 2 hours in advance, especially when I'm flying home from a city I've never been to before. I've never missed a flight due to long lines, but my family was once bumped from a flight due to it being overbooked. The airline booked us on the next flight, giving us First Class seats at no extra charge.

They were at the airport hours before the flight, it was so packed there she said and not enough employees working. She said on the flight they finally got on they set them right behind first class and my grandson could smell the food. Just like a kid, eat and complain about being hungry 5 minutes later. I told her they should have given them first class with no extra charge. They are here now and that is the main thing. Their luggage got here this morning on the flight they were supposed to have been on. Thank you for your response and have a good week.

tyhc415 nope because I do not like flying because of all that trouble so I take buses or trains and probably get there at the same time anyway.lol. I did this flight thing just once and had allthe same problems as your family so never again, take the bus and leave the driving to us. lol

You sound like me when it comes to flying, not my cup of tea. hahaha She and my grandson should be landing here in the next 15 minutes or so. They have been in airports and on planes since 4something this morning eastern time and it is almost 6pm central time. They had no problems last sunday when they went there. Talk about a long 4 1/2 hour flight huh? Thank you so much for responding and have a great evening.

That is horrible but I can see if the plane had a problem like yours. I am surprised my daughter kept her cool like she did and didn't tell them all about it. After they did get here she was searching online and found out some things so if it happens ever again she might get a first class ride. hahaha

You said 'plenty of time' but obviously that wasn't the case. You say you haven't flown so maybe you're not aware of the heightened security measures being taken at airports today and yes, it can take two hours or more to get through security. If they didn't allow for at least three hours before flight time, you can't fault the airport or the airlines. More employees might have made things move quicker, but that's just the way it is today, and we need to be prepared for it.

Yes I did say plenty of time because they did get there several hours before time. I said I have not flown before but I did not say my daughter hasn't flown before. She had no problems getting through security. She is not the only one having all these problems either. Thank you for your input. Have a good day.
