Do you sleep on a waterbed or a regular mattress?

I have a king size 80% waveless waterbed that I sleep on. People look at me funny when I tell them I have one. I know they were quite popular many years ago and I bought one way back when but this one I bought about 8 years and love it. I have back problems and it helps my back because there are no hard spots. I've tried sleeping on a regular mattress (at my in-laws place and in motels) but they just seem too hard and unflexable to me. It is getting harder and harder to find sheets for it though. They used to have them at Walmart but they quit carrying waterbed accessories a couple years back. I have been ordering them online and they are really expensive. So anyone that still has a waterbed can let me in on the secret of buying the sheets for it too. lol Have a good night, Char :-)

I've never had a waterbed, and always had trouble getting out of a waterbed, probably because I never tried out one that was 80% waveless! I sleep on a regular mattress, but very firm for my bad back. Sorry I cannot help with where to buy sheets for a waterbed.

Hi and Welcome to MyLot! It can be a little difficult getting in and out of the waterbed. I have a bad back and rhumatoid arthritis, but I have figured out that I can get out of the bed pretty good now. The waveless waterbed is definately the one to get if you want to get a waterbed. My son had a free flow type, and I would never have slept on that thing. lol Have a great day and I hope you come to love MyLot as much as I do, Char

Wow waterbeds. Used to have one when I was a child and now I have been sleeping on a regular matress for oh 25 years now. I would love to have a waterbed... a lot of apartment complexes don't let you have them so those who don't own their homes would have a problem there. Great post. Zelo

Thanks for your response. I think alot of us had them in the olden days. lol I do know some apartment landlords won't allow them. We used to live in an apartment and it was okay if you were on the bottom floor, which we were, so it worked for us. lol

I think it is more about weight than about the water. Depending on a lot of factors water ways approximately 8.3lbs/gallon and there is about 187 gallons of water in a queen waterbed. That is 1554 lbs of weight without the frame or the headboard. A regular bed I would guess is under 200 lbs. so that is a big difference. Of course if one was to leak in the second story that is a lot of water damage too! Thanks Zelo

Oh my gosh I totally forgot about the water bed. I had a king size waterbed about 30 years ago. OH how I loved my waterbed. Remember how you had to burb the bed to get all the air out of it. I remember how noisy the bed would be until I burbed it. Then it would be nice and quiet again. I loved laying on it, reading a book in the day when I had the bed all to myself. Does anyone out there still have their water bed?

I'm glad to find someone else who loves a waterbed. They are very hard to find anymore. In fact, the store that I bought mine from is no longer in business. Mine is a king size with a pillow top mattress pad on top and I love it! Have a good evening, Char

Hello All of my cousin's and a friend of mine had a water bed growing up , and I loved them . I always wanted one myself but never got one . I love water and am sure I would find peace and better nights sleep with those kinds of beds . I just have a queen bed now and sometimes it does bother my back . I am thinking about getting a water bed , but they are not that easy to find anymore.

Thanks for your response. You've got a point that they aren't that easy to find these days. In fact, the store that I bought mine from no longer has a store in our city. I don't know what I'll do if something happens to the frame??? Have a nice evening, Char

We did the waterbed thing back in the 80s when they were popular - but they didn't suit us because my husband likes to be very cool at night and I like to be warm. Therefore, we could never agree on the temperature of the water and either one of us would end up not sleeping well. We didn't ever have special sheets for it, though - just the normal ones. I didn't actually know you could get special waterbed sheets. I haven't seen waterbeds for sale for many years ... but I suppose eventually they'll make a comeback!

Thanks for your response. I never thought about using regular sheets for the waterbed. Evidentally you didn't have any trouble with the corners fitting? Waterbeds at the corners are wider than regular mattresses so I just wondered Have a nice evening, Char

Maybe we had flat sheets in those days ... it was 30 years ago, and I think a lot of sheets were flat then. Our waterbed had a bladder inside a wooden frame - so I would have just shoved the sides of the sheets down in between the bladder and the frame and they wouldn't have come untucked. I remember it was pretty easy to make!

I used to have a waterbed when I was a kid. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It had a drawers on the side of the bedframe that I kept my clothes in and then it had a door at the foot of the bedframe that I would crawl in sometimes or when I was told to clean my room, I just shoved everything in it. I have a regular mattress now. Now that I think of it, you really don't hear too much about waterbeds anymore. I've never really paid any attention to it until I seen your post. I'm glad you love your bed though, I'm sure it probably is alot more comfortable than a regular mattress. Have a good night!

Hi my friend, Thank you for your response. Sounds like you had a really kewl waterbed setup. I needed one of those doors on mine when I was growing up. You are right, you really don't hear about waterbeds that much these days, but I really like mine. Have a great day! Char

I do not have waterbed and never thought of getting one. Current matress already so comfy for me and my wife. Secondly waterbed is expensive so we could not justify the cost of purchasing it.

I sleep on a memory foam. I love it but you can't jump. When I got it, we all ran and jumped on it. THUMP! then you sink. lol Also makes for a good work out. But literally, you can't feel when somebody else moves. The down fall - it is ALWAYS hot! That foam holds the heat.

Thanks for your response. I didn't realize that about the memory foam. I think that if I didn't have a waterbed, the memory foam would be my next choice. It's a shame it's always hot. I keep my waterbed at a constant temperature so it never changes. It's warm and toasty in the winter time and cool in the summer. Have a great day! Char

No, I've never slept on a waterbed before. Are they really that comfortable? I have a California King size bed with a pillowtop and it is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. As far as the sheets go, have you tried Overstock.com? Their prices are very cheap compared with regular stores and you might just find hard to fit sizes. Otherwise, maybe Macy's or Bed Bath & Beyond? I hope you have good luck in finding your sheets!

Thanks for your response. To me, my waterbed is very comfortable. Of course, I have the waveless kind and I have a pillowtop mattress cover so it makes it real nice. Thanks for the info about Overstock.com and the other 2 places. I will have to check those out. Have a great day! Char

Years ago we had a queen sized waterbed. I came to HATE that thing. We moved several times and the internal baffles would get tangled and you'd end up with this huge lump somewhere you had to work loose. Then there were the leaks. You'd wake up soaking wet and realize you'd sprung a leak. So then began the laborous task of draining the thing out the window with a pump and garden hose. Hauling the bladder outside and filling it with air. Then running dish soap over it to watch for bubbles so you could find the leak! Then you patch, wait, drag it back in, refill it and wait 12 hours for it to heat so you aren't sleeping on an ice cube. Try doing all that in mid winter too! UGH. Thank goodness we got rid of the thing. The last time it sprung a leak I said NO MORE. Besides, for me anyway it was really hard on my back. We ended up buying a pillow top bed and I love it.

Hi my friend, If you do move alot, it can really be a pain in the gazebo to have to move. The waterbed mattress it self is so heavy with the fiber like we have in ours. We have only moved once since I've had a waterbed so we haven't had to deal with that much. I have had one leak in all the years that I've had the waterbed. Unlike you, I was lazy and didn't want to go through all the trouble of checking where the leak was and just bought another mattress. I do have a pillow top mattress cover for my bed and it really makes it nice. Have a great day! Char

I used to like water beds. But one night I was drinking to much and crashed with my keys in my pockets still. I woke up really wet and had to re-insulate the floor as it went all the way through into the living room downstairs.

Wow that would be an experience I wouldn't want to have. Yeah you've got to be careful with sharp items when you are in the waterbed. I think the one leak I had was from one of my dog's nails. I'm more careful now to make sure the bed is covered up with the comforter and shut my door when I'm not sleeping. Thanks for your response. Have a great day! Char

Hi and Welcome to MyLot! I did find another outlet online and they do have brick and mortar stores also but the closest one is about an hour away. I might as well order them online and pay for the shipping. It's probably cheaper that way now with the gas prices. lol Have a nice day and I hope you like MyLot as much as I do, Char

Used to have one, but its been a long time ago. I was pregnant with my youngest at the time. You know, it's really hard getting out of a waterbed when you are nine months pregnant. LOL

Thanks for your response. I had a waterbed when I was pregnant too and even though it was comfortable, it really took a workout to get out of it. I made sure no one was around to watch while I was getting out of it. lol Have a great day! Char

yes, waterbed has no hard spot and its flexible too as compared to regular mattress. and for the people having back problem and who hate mattress due to hard spot, waterbed (waveless) is a good alternative. now a days waterbeds are not in use it is almost obsolete, but with effort and pain we can find it through some well known stores i think there is no such problem in this. anyway best of luck to you as you have one using that.

i never had a water bed but i tried sitting on it before. it's cold but i like bed who doesn't move that much. waterbed moves when someone sit on it right. hehehe.. i like mattress which has no much of spring under so that it won't be that bouncy as waterbeds..

I prefer and do sleep on the floor or bare wood, eventhough I have both waterbed and mattress. This may be a wrong concept I got since childhood, but even after growing up, I really follow the old. My wife sometimes get angry to my odd behavior.
