The Mormon Quilt

A week or so ago I started a discussion on reaching goals. One of my goals at the time was to finish my younger brother’s quilt, a Mormon quilt. I call it a Mormon quilt simply b/c he’s Mormon and the picture on the quilt is of the St. Louis Temple. Well, it’s finally done…I actually finished it several days ago but had to wait till I could get a pic of it since it takes 2 ppl to hold it up and one to take the pic. I still have to put the batting and the back sheet on it and tack it but here is the top of the quilt for those of you who wanted to see it. I am so glad that the hard part is over with. I think he’ll like it. At the top I put LDS for Latter Day Saints. What do you think? Do you think he’ll like it? If you could pick a design for your, what would it be? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Thank you for the picture of the quilt. I have never seen one like that before and I know your brother will love it and appreciate all the work you did for him. I am not sure what quilt pattern I would like to have off hand, there are so many pretty ones. My grandmother made Little Dutch Girl for me and my mother made a patch work quilt that is from scraps of materials she had left over from sewing over the past many years and that one is special to look at too, so many of the scraps that I can recognize as things she made for herself, my daughter, and myself.

I haven't seen a Little Dutch Girl design in a long time...also Sunbonnet Sue...those used to be really popular. I made one a long time ago with baby clothes from my Nephew...I still have it tucked away. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Your quilt is beautiful and he will love it not only for that but the love and time you put into making it for him. That is a time consuming thing to take on for someone. For me I think I'd like to have one with a castle on it with turrents and all a whole country scene. Trees and horse drawn carrage. I know it sounds silly but I love castles and the country. I have never seen a quilt like that. Since I can't make them anymore I can't make me one. I've never made me one, just everyone else. Now I can't. It's just a thought.

Lone Star Quilt - This is a photo of a Lone Star Quilt. It has the starburst effect that I like. it is a very nice quilt.
Hey that is great! it has been two weeks so I am sure you have it totally finished by now. I love quilting it is so calming. My grandmother taught me to hand sew a quilt. My favorite is the starburst effect of the lone star quilt. I am sure your brother loves it very much and cherishes it because it was made with your two hands and love you put into sewing each piece together. I love it and I am sure he did as well! I am starting to learn to quilt and am in the process of making my first quilt ever. I will have to post pictures if I can ever get it done. Any suggestions for someone starting out?

Quilting is so hard for me. I do cross stitching and other hand work. I have never quilted but I do not sew. I would like to get back into sewing sometime. I will look at the quite after I post this from my email.

I am sure that he will like it alot. I am trying to get motivated to get started on the queen-size quilt for my oldest son. He is a great fan of NASCAR and Dale Earnhart SR and JR. He wamts all of the squares to be counted cross stitch pictures of the two Earnhardts and their cars. It is going to be alot of work but I will get it done---hopefully in time to enter it in the arts and crafts competition at the Jesup Farmers Days in July next year. In 2003 I made a queen=sized quuilt for my youngest son where half the squres were red marbled material and the other half were bouquets of red roses that were hand embroidered (12 squares total--two for pillows and 10 in the quilt top). I have nine squares embroidered right now that have purple morning glories on them. I will have a total of 12 when I finish them and will probably make them into a twin sized quilt. I have plans to make a quilt for a friend that will have embroidered squares of cats as she is a real cat lover and I guess I would consider her my closest friend as we have known each other since kindergarten, I am looking forward to learning how to do pieced quilts as I presently live on the outskirts of the Amish district in Buchanan County in Iowa. The Amish women make beautiful quilts for sale but the quilts they make for their own use are plain like most of the things in their lives.

You are good at reaching goals. If it was my brother, he would like it, whatever I did to it. If I were choosing a quilt for someone to do for me right now, it would probably be "Tumbling Blocks". I have a top that came from my mom's house. I do not know for sure that she pieced it, as in my experience she seldom finished anything. I even have the perfect fabric to back it, but cannot get around to it, either. Why should I criticize her. I also have a box full of Dresden Plate blocks put together by my Dad's mother. I need to decide what to do about them.

I cant believe that someone here has actually hand-made such a big and beautiful thing…I mean we are so used to buying everything machine-made that its almost an achievement what you have done. So much patience and in this age

Wow! $3000 to $6000 a quilt! I would not be able to use it twoeye…its something like an heirloom, to be framed and hanged on the wall…I would rather take one like you stitched

It's funny that you should mention this. Just yesterday my Mom was telling me about one of my aunts that her husband and his mom do quilting. They've opened their own little store selling them and my aunt is planning to quit her job and go to work making and selling the quilts. The quilts are all machine done and more or less mass produced. They gave one to my Grandma and while it's colors are beautiful to be honest it looks like something that you'd buy at Walmarts. I also know a woman in Oklahoma that is in her 70's-80's and hand stitches her quilts from start to finish taking 7-8 months to do one. She also gets $3000-$6000 a piece for them. Her work is breathtaking not to mention that much work is a rarity. The only other ppl that do work like that is the Amish and I think they might do some of theirs on a machine. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I think he'll love it. Its very pretty. I would probably pick a dog design for me since I love dogs. Actually almost any kind of animal would work. My mom use to do quilts and I wish she had taught me how. I would love to be able to do something like that.

If he doesn't then there's something wrong with him!! lol No really, it is really nice, you did a wonderful job on it!! Now if I had one made for myself.... can you only guess what it would be? lol Cats and dogs of course!! lol My mom would love panda bears. My dad would love white horses because he had one when he was a kid and he named him Fleet. He has only one 3.5 x 5 picture of him and it's hanging on his bedroom wall.

Wow,that's great!! I would love to see a photo of how it turned out. I think LDS is fine. If I had a design for a quilt it would say "There is no shame in trying and failing, only in failing to try," which is my favorite quote.

It is gorgeous. If he doesn't like it, I'm sure it won't be because of the quality of the work. I've never done a full quilt, only one baby quilt many years ago. Recently I started piecing square made of fleece. It will be interesting if it turns out well. I've never seen a fleece quilt, probably because it stretches easily and I don't imagine I could put it in a frame. I'm going about this project as an experiment, so who knows what I'll end up with. I'm thinking I'll knot it rather than actually quilt it. What kind of thread does one use for knotting? The reason I'm making it from fleece is that our church group makes the fleece no-sew blankets for Project Linus and there are always these squares that are cut off of the corners. I've accumulated an awfully lot of them and been trying to figure out what to do with them. I recently I started cutting them into four-inch squares and then piecing the four corners from one piece of fabric together to make a square. It certainly makes for interesting squares! Any tips for those who quilt?

Thanks, both for the encouragement and the information. I know what kind of thread you are talking about because I also crochet. That is one less mystery for me.

All of mine are tacked when their done. Meaning that instead of having the layers top stitched on a machine I tie individual knots through the layers to bind the layers together. I like doing it b/c it's the way they used to do it when quilting was done by hand. As to what kind of thread, I use the crocheting thread that is normally used for things like doilies or tatting. It's kind of like a really thick sewing thread. A fleece quilt sounds really comfy. As for tips, probably my best tip is to have patience. Take your time and have fun with it. Don't get upset if you make a mistake and have to rip out rows...I've had to do that many times. Keep your hands clean...I keep a bottle of hand sanatizer by my quilting area. Also wash your fabric before you stitch it b/c there are some that will bleed dye onto your lighter colors. Good luck with yours. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

That came out cool. I think he'll like it. Cat quilt, all different cats that I've had would probably be my best. A sunflower or wild flower quilt would be cool. A wild edible quilt would be neat. So many possibilites, my farmhouse and barn if they were fixed up with the trees would be neat. I had a Ba'hai Faith friend. Their sacred building looks like a lotus blossom, I bet that would be an awesome quilt, too.

Your brother will cherish it because it came from you. You did a wonderful job on the quit top, congrats for a job well done. I suppose I would choose a star pattern with lots of blues and white. I may make a large quilt someday, that would be awesome!

hi twoey68 thats a really gorgeous quilt and of course hewill like it. If I could pick a quilt design it would be one of those popular in the early days of the US and I cannot for the life of me remember the name now but if i saw it among a lotof other designs I would recognize it at once.
