Sarah Palin thinks fruit fly research is wasteful spending

Oops, she did it again - said something that shows her ignorance in matters that anybody running for VP of the United States should be knowledgeable about. Not to mention anybody with a special needs child should be knowledgeable about! She was talking about earmarks, which she defined as "pet projects that don't do the general public a lot of good." That's a perfectly valid definition. But what was first example? Fruit fly research in Paris. Too bad Sarah doesn't know that fruit fly research is valid scientific research that can help us to understand the causes of autism, among other things. Maybe instead of spending 22K on a makeup artist for her, they should have spent that on educating her.

Is it though? Maybe the research has come up with nothing, and they're just dragging it out.

Philjas, as you can see, once again the Palin supporters don't think this is a problem at all. There are so many stupid things we waste money on yet all she could think of was something that might actually produce some useful results. Add this to the long list of Sarah Cari-boo-boos! Apparently she was a feminist a few weeks ago but she isn't anymore and hates labels. She even brought up about labeling people from different parts of the country in different ways! I guess she not only forgot she told Katie she's a feminist for she also forgot telling her supporters there are parts of the U.S. that aren't in the "real America"...lol! Annie

Annie, there's nothing to support the idea that a cure is coming from fruit flies. That's a ploy to get more funding. Do you know how many times researchers have claimed that the space program will lead to a cure for AIDS and cancer? Saying your research will cure something is the best way to get funding. There are MUSICIANS who have gotten tens of thousands of dollars in grants for research where they claim music will bring people out of comas and reverse brain damage. I'm not making this up! My wife was looking at this as she is working on her PHD and DMA in music.

Yeah because why should we "waste" money looking for cures and treatment of medical conditions when we could be building "bridges to no where"?

Yes and if they're implying that Palin actually knows all about fruit fly research, realizes it's "produced nothing" and therefore thinks it's wasteful to continue it, I think she would have explained that rather just saying with a laugh, "FRUIT FLY research - I kid you not!" If you watch the video of her saying it you can tell that she obviously doesn't know a thing about it and simply thinks it sounds stupid so therefore it must be.

You're attacking her for being against wasting money on fruit fly research? I guess you'll complain about anything now. Yes, I've heard of what SOME people think this research MIGHT produce. Do you know how much it's produced so far? NOTHING.

Autism isn't the only thing that there isn't a cure for yet. I've been taking chemo treatments for 6 years and they haven't found a cure for cancer either. But by God I hope they keep trying!

I found this delightful take on the "cures" of autism from an autistic. She calls it dangerous quackery. I agree and thankfully so did my daughter's developmental specialist.

Autism???? Gee make sure Jenny McCarthy knows about that one. Her kid's probably getting tired of the loopy diet she's got him on. Oh and it is sanctioned by Autism Speaks the same Autism Speaks that has a founding member who said she wanted to kill her autistic child but didn't for the sake of the "normal" child she had.

Regardless of what her supporters are going to say, if Palin is going to get specific about something, she needs to know what the heck she's talking about because, if she doesn't and ends up looking stupid, it's her own fault. Maybe she does it on purpose so she can play victim...you know, like that faked out Joe the Plumber.

Wow people sure dig deep for something to rip on Palin for. I am not a supporter of either candidate but to rip on someone because they don't know about fruit fly research in Paris in crazy. Are people that desperate for Obama to win that they will stoop to these kind of attacks? it is funny how everything she does or even wears gets criticized but yet nothing about what the men spend, wear, or stupid things they say get called out. Seems pretty sexist if you ask me. Good luck with the fruit flies.

I think is just that she shows how stupid she is to even make the statement.

Well I have to agree that the government does spend a lot of money or stupid wasteful studies of some booger or pimple or what have you on a frogs hinny. She just used fruit fly as an example. What is your problem?

Her problem is that she must criticize EVERYTHING that Sarah Palin does. Palin can't breathe without someone claiming she's doing it wrong.

Well Unlike the rest of you bashers, I actually did a little research on this. (It doesn't hurt I promise) I don't think it's the research part that SARAH is against, I think it's THE PARIS PART. As any ten year old could easily see. In fact this issue is on the top of the Citizens Against Government Waste website. http://www.cagw.org/site/PageServer?pagename=reports_pigbook2008Oinkers It's worth a bookmark. Also There is a Democrat in "Mini sO ta" That agrees with her. At least his spokesbabe does. “If John Kline thinks safe roads and bridges in Minnesota are equivalent to ‘olive fruit fly research in Paris,’ then he’d better talk to Minnesotans whose lives are being affected, sometimes tragically, by our crumbling infrastructure,” said Sarvi spokeswoman Bridget Cusick. www.stevesarvi.org/ Although I don't see the connection between Kline and this research. It was attributed to a California Democrat. But hey, continue the bashing. Don't let me stop you. You just show once again that Sarah is smarter than you look.

hi philjas yes someone shoud have educated her on a lotof things, and I do think shes just not cut out to be a vice president of'the United States at all. She seems to me to be out of her league and not really interested in the issues that are so crucial for the rest of us..

She's only bringing this up because she's anti-Palin. If Palin gave her kids pinworm medicine phil would probably being accusing Palin of murdering pinworms.

Philjas, The problem, as I see it, is America is tired of congress spending OUR money on foolishness or at the very least something that is netting no return! We already fund many medical research institutions and if this is a necessary viable study for the relief or cure of autism, then let the medical researchers do it not a seperate grant. Our congress is getting very good at spending "other peoples money" and your candidats has never met a peice of "pork" he didn't like! John McCain says he will make these "pork barrel" theives famous or rather infamous if you will. I want to know how it is even legal to attach spending "wish lists" not even related to the impending bill! This is how our government spending has gotten out of control and is becoming the greatest threat to our already stressed economy!

Anyone who has studied basic biology knows that research using fruit flies forms the basis of a great deal of our current knowledge about genetics. That doesn't matter, though. What matters is that it can be made to sound trivial, just as the Zeiss projector that powers the oldest planetarium exhibit in the country can be called an 'overhead projector' and ridiculed.

That's a pretty absurd assumption. How many people who have studied "basic" biology have you interviewed and asked about this? I've studied both human biology and the biology of human sexuality in college and I've NEVER heard of fruit fly research being used for anything related to humans prior to this post. Are you an expert on biology? Are you aware that NONE of this research has accomplished ANYTHING with regards to curing autism as the poster of this thread implies? To me that just sounds like an excuse used to get more funding for the project. Now I like planetariums, but there are much more important things I'd rather my FEDERAL dollars go to than a LOCAL planetarium. That type of thing should be funded by state and local taxes. Nobody outside of the state of Illinois is benefiting from that multimillion dollar overhead projector.

When does anyone here think that Bush and McCain will stop spending over 10 billion a month in Iraq? Money that we have to borrow from other countries such as China. McCain said we would be there at least another 10 years. I have two grandsons that are 10 years old. I damn sure don't want them being "cannon fodder" for the warmongers.

Nope, I'm an expert on research. But I do remember 7th grade biology and learning about Mendel's experiments with plants and Thomas Morgan's experiments with fruit flies that have formed the basis of our modern understanding of genes, chromosomes, alleles and genetics. That amniocentesis that told Sarah Palin that she was carrying a child who would probably have Down Syndrome is based on an analysis of chromosomal abnormalities, and the original basis for research into chromosomes came from Morgan's experiments with fruit flies.
