The other day, I saw a new ad for some medicine for upset stomach. I didn’t really pay attention to the ad till it gets to the end and then the announcer starts talking about “using this may cause…” part. He starts listing the side effects: sleeplessness, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, dry mouth and possible bleeding of the brain. I stopped dead in my tracks and had to listen to it again…what kind of idiotic company makes a medication for upset stomach that may cause bleeding of the brain???? I mean really would you trade your tummy ache for bleeding of the brain??? Isn’t the whole purpose of these meds supposed to make you feel better…not worse? Not to mention I’d rather deal with an upset stomach then diarrhea and nausea any day of the week. It just amazed me that these were side effects. They couldn’t pay me enough to take a medication that was going to give me side effects like that. What’s the most bizarre side effect you’ve heard of? Would you take one medication for something like a stomachache if it were going to have side effects like these? Do you really look at the side effects of any meds you are on? MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

I want to know the side effects from any medication I am going to take. It may interfere with other medications you are taking. Also, my mother's doctor said age also had to do with some of the side effects. Where it might not bother a younger person, it could bother an older person, especially one on medications that might not mix with certain things. The medication my mother takes shouldn't be mixed with any antihistamine. I knew that, but never realized some over-the-counter medications had antihistamines in them.

I see and hear about so many medicines where the side effects are IMO worse than the ailment.

Isn't nausia about the same as upset stomach? Shouldn't it then read " May cause what it's supposed to cure" No thanks.... I'll just lie here & suffer quietly without a bleeding brain, thank you!

Those are some adverse side effects and I wouldn't want to take that medication at all. Did you happen to catch the name? I have seen some medications with the side effects causing, brain damage, nerve damage, stroke, seizures, liver and kidney damage and a multiple of other side effects. People should always read or ask their pharmacist the side effects of all medications. If you are taking one that has the same side effects then that is a double or triple whammy! so always find out and if you don't like the side effects then try to see if your doctor can find you a safer alternative.

oh I agree with you, I would not take anything that causes bleeding in the brain, I wonder how it got FDA approved.

Aspirin can cause bleeding of the brain too. It does not mean it should be banned.

I have to take medicine for my borderline diabetes, and I read the side effects. It does look rather menacing. At least it did not have the warning, "if your arm falls off, or you get warts all over your face, or your skin peels off or your legs turn inward and your heel goes in front," stop taking this medicine!" But when my brain starts to bleed and my head explodes, I will stop taking the medicine and call the doctor. (or have my husband do it for me.)

My daughter always tells me to stop reading the side effects to medications but she does the same thing. hahaha I have seen and heard too many commercials on TV where the side effects are way far worse than the problem the medicine is for. Why take the chance of having a major problem just to cure a hangnail?

oh my goodness...yea i'd rather have an upset tummy for a short amount of time rather than BRAIN bleeding.....hmmm. the only thing that sticks out for me was the potato chips that right on the back said may cause anal leakage....WHAT? hahaha!! it was due to the kind of oil they used i believe. THAT was the most interesting......and something to stay away from, HAHAHA!

Listening to the laundry list of side effects that some medications have I think it is better to deal with the problem. Bleeding of the brain is probably the worst one I have ever heard of. Hm...tummy ache....brain bleeding....which to choose....duh!

What ever happened to baking soda for an upset stomach? I wouldn't take something that can cause all those problems for a tummy ache. For a life threatening illness maybe, but not for a simple tummy ache.

There are tremendous possible side effects to almost EVERY single medication in the world. ALL medication is a risk. That's why studies are performed and regulations met. There is always one person in a million who will have a different reaction to something. There is no way to know if you are that one in a million until you take the medication. The most bizarre side effect I have heard of was from some fat reducing pill that would cause your body to reject the fat in foods. It was prescription and not one of those "pills" they sell in magazines. I believe they recalled it. The side effect was........... oily stools! ewwwwwww!

Yes I'm sure some of these meds need to be monitered very closesly.. I went to a college and most of my classes were medical classes. Also most of my teachers taught at Yale as well. Anyways, I learned that most problems we have have side effects but it takes a while for the side effects to come to the surface. Once they do most doctors only treat the side effects and the main problem that existed beforehand is left untreated, ignored... And the meds that are fixing our side effects are causing more side effects, therefore leading to more meds for those ones and,, like a dominoes effect, it just gets worse and worse. Did you know that simply taking Tums for heartburn can cause issues. All heartburn is is a reaction to acidic food.. so eat less acidic food and you wont have to worry. I hope this is informative.

Oh I know.... Dont you just love the slow happy music and the optomistic tone in the voices when listing the side effects??? I know this all too well, now I just pay attention to those commercials for entertainment purposes. LOL It just gives me a good laugh from time to time. I cant remember specifically what side effects I've heard but I Kknow that I've been stumped as well. It's the reason why there are so many medical lawyers out there and they actually make the most money.

I am not sure what the most bizzare side effect is that I have heard. But I do know some medicine some of never been allow to be on th emarket. I agree that medicines that cause worse side effects just to cure something is bad. I guess my stomach would have to hurt pretty darn bad for me to risk teh side effects. Yes, I look at my side effects on my medication. I guess the one thing i just learned about is teh interaction of all my meds together. One is not good and can cause me an over dose if mixed together with advil.

Bleeding of the brain? Wow, what a thing to sneak in there with the nausea and dry mouth! I guess I'd take a medicine like that if I needed it and nothing else was available, but if it is just to treat an upset stomach...I have Pepto Bismal for that! No bleeding of the brain side effect with that medicine.
