Does God use different methods of teaching his people?

I was having a discussion with a lady that I met on cafemom. I am LDS and she is non-denom. We have been bouncing questions off of each other for a year. This is one question that we have recently realized we both believe in. Do you think God uses different methods of teaching his people. For example, many believe that prophets are not needed now because of what the Bible says in Hebrews 1:1 but if God uses different methods then couldn't it be possible that we now need prophets? Thoughts? Comments? Questions?

Isn't it awesome that people actually can get together and talk about religion without becoming enemies? Yes, I agree that God uses different methods to teach his people.. but we probably agree on a lot of things... I'm LDS too. ;~D

People can talk religion without becoming enemies as long as there is no proselytism involved in their posts. To be honest i'm intrigued to see so many variations of Christianty, so many Churches, so many interpretations, visions and systems of value. Reflecting to this situation made me come with a set of questions: Why God let this happen? (And i'm reffering to the existence of so many Christian churches, each claiming to be the One holding the Truth). Why can't everyone believe in his God and directly communicate with Him/Them (in the case of the Trinity) without the help of the Church? Why we need clergy as an interface with God? In my oppinion all these systemic problems have a human, not a divine nature. Why God's gospels have so many interpretations?

The way that I see it, most churches are, for the most part, in line with one another, but vary on small differences, that, in the overall picture of salvation, don't matter. But I think it is in our natural sinful nature to divide. If we look to the history of Christianity, its theologies were divided from its early beginnings between the east and west. Many "heretic" forms of Christianity came along the way, but were discounted. The reformation led way for more division. Many were fed up with the idea of "one Holy catholic and apostolic church." I don't think that God is responsible for so much division, I think that humans are. If the Catholic church did not go against the Franciscan and early Dominican teachings, they wouldn't have been so overwhelmed with corruption, and the reformation would have (probably) never happened, because there would not have been a need for it.

I definitely think that the God of Abraham (I don't think there is any other God) uses different methods of teaching His people when it comes to other religions (Judaism, Islam, Bahai) But I also think that a lot of the teachings are false. I don't think that it means that the followers of false teachings are automatically damned to hell, though. Really that is for God to decide. Often times humans can't control their belief in a certain religion because it is how they were raised and the only truth that they know. From what I can tell from your posts, it seems that you are contemplating your religion (LDS). If I were you, I would keep questioning it, do not just accept what people tell you! As the poster above said, Jesus did say that there would be prophets to come. But Jesus also warns that there will also be false prophets: Matthew 7:15-23 Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, and a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Matthew 24:10-13; 24 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved... for false Christ's and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect- if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. I am not going to tell you that your beliefs in Joseph Smith as a prophet are false simply because I do not agree. Because me not agreeing with something doesn't make it false. I'm just encouraging you to continue asking question and continue studying your religion because if your religion is true, you are only coming closer to the truth, and if it not be true, you are still only coming closer to the truth.

Thank you, but I'm actually getting others to think about the LDS faith. So they may ask me questions. I am very strong in my faith; thank you. I do love learning about others faith, but not because I am struggling to find my path, but so that I know the differences between faiths so I may teach my children so that they may be able to make their own choice when it comes to religion. Here are a couple more questions to think about. Why warn us against false prophets if there aren't going to be true prophets? Everything has its opposite, right? One more question. Have you studied the LDS faith? Thanks for your comment!

I do study other religions, in fact I am very interested in the study of Islam. Islam is very similar to the Latter day Saint movement in the sense that they both serve the same God, the God of Abraham, and have a prophet following Jesus that came to clarify the true word of God through a Holy book written by a true prophet. But honestly, I am not a scholar or theologian and I don't devote a great deal of time to studying other religions, but I do believe that it is good to know the basics of those religions. Could you tell me about a few of the Mormon charities that help others? There are of course many Christian ones, the one most associated with my specific branch is the Mennonite Central Committee. But I have never heard of any Mormon charities. As for preaching the word, I agree that we should, but only to those who are willing to hear us. 1 Peter 3:13, 15-16 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?... But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

You don't have to be looking for the truth to study other religions. I do it all the time! Didn't Christ tell his people to go and preach the gospel? In Mark 16:15 it reads: "And he said unto them, Go ye into the world and preach the gospel to every creature." There is another one that I can't seem to find about "spreading the good news." Wish I could find that one to share!! The fruits of J.S. is the Book of Mormon. We also believe in helping anyone we can!

As you point out in Hebrews chap. 1, God has used various methods to communicate with mankind. All these communications that we need are found in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. 2 Timothy 3:13-17 (New International Version) 13while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

with regard to prophecy, i believe that it is still possible that God speaks to us through prophecy or even direct revelation to certain people. However, these must always be tested. The apostles speak of testing the spirits to see if they are from God, and this is done by checking its consistency with Scripture. So our primary reference is Scripture, although that doesn't rule out the possibility of other sources of revelation, but in the end, they still must be consistent with Scripture. God bless! :)

Can someone explain to me what the LDS believe in regards to God in flesh and bones and Jesus in flesh and bones? From what I've read the LDS believes that God and Jesus are two separate entities, both have the form of flesh and bones. Do you believe in the trinity?

It has always been my believe, get his message to different people in different ways. Keep this in mind, God is everything. God is honest. So, if people is everything and everything is honest, God has different ways of getting to his flock. I believe God does talk to people directly. However, you have to be careful. As their are some people who twist the words of God to benefit themselves.

I agree that we have to be careful with our own personal revelations. First off, we have to be sure that what we think are personal revelations are actually from God and then that we don't twist them for our own benefit! Thanks for the comment!
