How hot?

Australia
December 14, 2008 10:49pm CST
Well it' summer here in Australia and the days are long and hot and humid. Fans and air conditioning is constantly on in every room in the house and people tend to move much much slower. As muggy and hot as it is though, I don't like to swim unless it's really hot. By this I mean so hot that you can't do anything and you've got sweat dripping off you. I call it 'hot enough to swim'. How about you? HOw hot does it have to be before you get in the pool or dive into the ocean?

I haven't been in a pool or ocean for a long time. But back when I used to on occasion, as long as the weather was appropriate for swimming then I might go. But I wouldn't go just because it got really hot. It is winter where I am now with a little snow this morning and more forecast for this coming week so this is definitely not the season for getting in a pool. Actually if it is really hot and I'm not doing something like running or playing tennis, then I would rather be inside in the air conditioning.

For us the ocean is a bit far away and too chilly, and I am not getting in our pool until the neighbor with the vicious dogs goes AWAY, but I think that 80F is a good temperature for swimming. That is the temperature that we usually have our AC set to.

Hi coffee...is it really summer in Australia? Wow and its winter over here in the UK!! That has surprised me as it is so cold here. It has to be a really hot sunny day before I jump in the pool here or go swimming and the winter months are a definite no no for that...littleowl

i thought all along that there is no such thing as very hot time there in Australia. I thought our hot weather here in the Philippines could be one of the worst had I not read your post. Well, perhaps the hot weather could really be hotter than before because of the global warming. But it is not yet summer time so we can't go to the beach yet. Summer is the only time of the year when we have long vacation and could take a retreat at the beach.

Half your luck! I am in Mudgee... and I had to put the heater back on the whole weekend. It was windy, raining and cold the whole weekend. We had the same thing two or three weeks ago... in worse. It was snowing in the Blue Mountains. We seem to go from one extreme to another. I remember two years ago... Melbourne was talking about selling water to Sydney. Today... Sydney has plenty of water... and Melbourne is out of water. By the way... I am like you. It needs to be 35 degres for me to get in the water. I cannot adapt to sudden change of temperature. My body goes into shock. Even walking into a cool supermarket when it is 35 degres outside makes me feel crook.

Summer you say ....Where?????????? I have seen nothing but rain since Thursday afternoon! but not going to complain about the rain as we desperately need it so hope that it keeps coming. But yes I must agree with you about it being hot in parts of Australia at the moment as I just spend the last 2 weeks in Queensland on the gold coast and it was very hot, around 32 to 35 degrees everyday and we swam everyday while we were there and then we get back to Victoria and it is like 20 degrees.... uekk cold

Hi Coffeeshot, I don't know swimming. Moreover, it is uniformly hot throughout the year over here, except maybe in December, Jan, and Feb and from June to September. Right now, it is getting colder and colder. :) Cheers and happy mylotting

Hey coffeeshot! It is so strange again to hear how opposite your weather is from our here in the US! When we were dying from the intense heat you guys were freezing from the cold! Now it's summer for you and we are having winter! I wish it was summer here again! I hate the cold so much! So far it has been cold and then it kind of warms up for a few days and we haven't had any snow at all yet. I love to swim, but am not near any pools or beaches so I just melt all summer long and we had a very hot summer. I just stay near the fans because I can't afford to run the air conditioning. I don't like to be too hot either. I tend to just keep jumping into the shower to cool off. Only that doesn't last for long because when you get out the melting starts all over again!

Well, I don't swim anymore so it would have to be really hot. Right now however it is -7 below and with windchill it is -32 below 0. So all's I can say is I have blankets on and praying for it to go up but no it is going to be -17 tonight and with wind chill it will be about -40 below. Take a cool bath and be happy as I could have ice hanging off me when I get out of the shower. Your very cold friend onlydia

But i heard that some parts of Australia are very cool in winter. I mean even before winter i heard my cousins who live in Australia that its very cold there. I dont know actually. I am living in Malaysia and its very warm here throughout the year. There is only one weather here and i love to swim. So I usually swim every 2nd or the third day. which makes me feel good.

When I was a little girl summertime was the time for swimming. It didn't matter the temperature.I would swim All summer long. These days , when it is hot, I just stay home in the AC. Here in Virginia , our summers are hazy , hot and humid. So I have a good idea what you are going through.Keep cool. Happy New Year.

Funny you should bring up this discussion right at this time coffeeshot, because today I did go into the ocean for a swim - something I haven't done in years! I live up in Queensland, where we have been having 32 degree days - very hot and sticky. This morning it was hot and sticky again, so I said to my hubby "Let's take the dogs down to the beach to cool off". So we did. The dogs loved it (they had a swim too), and we really enjoyed ourselves. I'd forgotten how nice it is to swim in the ocean - lovely and refreshing! We've had the air conditioning on every day recently, and the fans at night, so I'm not looking forward to our next electric bill!

Hi Abbey, I was just spend 2 weeks in Queensland and the weather was fantastic love it hot like that but we didn't get to go the beach while we were there but we have a pool in the park where we stayed and we swam in that all the time. Oh I just love Queensland and want to move there and EVERYTHING IS SO GREEN not like here in Victoria it is all dry and brown and the Thunder storms just loved them while we where there too! Missed get them here in Victoria too

Hi msmell! Our beaches are considered some of the best in the world. Next time you visit, you should go for a swim in the ocean! We have had some fierce storms this year but I don't like them.

I swim outdoors in the natural rivers or lakes nearly every day in the summer. So long as the air temperature doesn't leave my teeth chattering when I emerge, I'm happy. I'm very jealous of you having some warmth just now. Here, it is freezing. My wood burning stove is on every hour we're awake, but you can still see your breath in the bedrooms.

Here in the Philippines, the hottest month is April because its our time for summer. In that time, I don't want to expose myself to sunlight when swimming because it causes my skin to be darken, and I don't want to happen to me again.
