Which is the oldest thing in your house?

I developed an interest in antiques after writing around 50 articles on antique furniture for a client. After completing the fiftieth article and breathing a sigh of relief, I wondered about my own house. "Which is the oldest thing here?" I asked my Mom, and she said, "I am the oldest thing." "Well, you are a human being," I replied. "Not a thing!" Come to think of it, I don't have anything that is really old. We sold everything when we shifted house, and everything here is brand new. I felt a bit disappointed when I realized that. Isn't it charming to have something really old in your house that has been cherished for years and years and years? Something that seems to have a soul and can tell stories of what happened years ago? Does this remind you of something really old that you own? Cheers and happy Mylotting

My hubby has an antique player piano that is probably one of the oldest things in the house. I think it was built in about 1923. For me, the oldest thing I have is a cameo pin that my grandmother gave me. I believe that one of her employers brought it back from a trip to Europe in 1930.

We don't really have very many antiques at my house, there is an old doll we found when we were cleaning out my mom's house. There is also a plate that belonged to my wife's grandfather, but I don't know how old it is, my wife is 43 and she says it is at least as old as she is but is probably older. Other than that I can't really think of anything that we have that is that old in our house.

Well, as I collect stones and fossils and such it would have to be one of those items. I don't know which is oldest though. I have fossils of fern leaves and petrified wood. On a personal note though we have a wardrobe that has been in the family for generations and our home was built by my husbands great grandfather.

The oldest thing besides my husband?!! LOL I have several things passed down from my family. I have my great-grandmother's rocker which is from the 1800's, an end table that is about 80 years old, some old jewelry, dishes, cups, etc. I am the one who was always into such things so most of it ended up with me. I also have an old family bible from the 1800's that the spine has broken. It has a tooled, leather cover and back and one day I hope to find someone who can repair it. It is a treasure.

I have a small desk over 100 years that I inherited from my Grandmother. I never clean it but what I think of her. It's not because it's old that I love it, it's because of the memories.

Sounds like the perfect desk for a sewing machine. My sewing machine currently has no home. In fact I want a new sewing machine too! Hehehe.

Sometimes it's BECAUSE of the memories that I get rid of stuff! Although that desk sounds like something I might keep! Does it have a secret compartment??

Hello positiveminded1977, I think the oldest thing in our house is my 14 inch television. It's been with us since my college years. It's been to repair shop once and it is still working now. It is used by my children for their Playstation 2. I guess it is about 30 years old. Not bad for a television set. I think it will still last another 20 years as long as there are still spare parts available when it's time to go to the repair shop again. I think there maybe some more items older. I need to check, maybe their are already priceless antique in here. Regards.

well if you don't include human beings i don't have anything that is really old. I have a display cabinet that is around 30 over years old. i also have a dining set and a sofa set that is more than 20 years old. there are some stuff that i'm not too sure about the 'age'. i've gotten them 2nd hand as it was a real bargain. if i had bought them from the store each will cost me more than $200. i got 4 from ebay at $200, isn't that a steal?

I was thinking about this, and wondering ... I have some old jewellery and some old ornaments. Then I realised that I have one thing that surpasses all those things. Once I found a fossil when out bushwalking and I still have it. That would be by far the oldest thing in our house! It is amazing that something which lived such a long, long, long time ago is still being remembered by me today.

Your discussion made me look around. It is surprising how many old things I have found in our home ... if it's older than me, I consider it old ... lol. I have books, crockery, jewellery, pictures and a couple of small items of furniture. It's all stuff that has been passed down and I haven't had the heart to give or throw away. None of it is really sentimental to me, but it might be to my daughter or to my nephews or nieces in the future.

My 31 year old TV - Here's a shot of my 31 year old console tv, it will turn 32 in 2009 /springtime
but its on its last leg, color picture tube is going out; I have a lot of "green colored" people and some orange/pinkish people skin tones, NOT FUN TO WATCH AT ALL!
hi Positive: Shoot I have lots of "old" things here if I didn't have them my house would be really empty...I think the oldest thing would be my big old Console TV; and or it could be my old Mattress set but I don't think its as old as my TV; Of course my old body is the oldest seeing that I'm 47 (G)! 47 going on 99+++ with all of my aches and pains/injuries and what not;

I have had a good look around the house and the oldest thing that I have found is a small hourglass filled with pink sand. My father gave it to me when we lived in Italy as a reward for a good report card. It is around 40 years old. Is something that old an antique? I don't know but the sentimental value for me is great.

It is surely an old thing with a lot of sentimental value; but I wonder if it could be called an antique. I read somewhere that an antique is supposed to be at least a century old. :) Thanks for the response.

My mother has a porcelain doll from Victorian England and my father has a sword from the US Civil War. This guy my brother knows is a Civil War antiquity buff and said the sword could sell for $1,000+. Pretty neat.

The oldest thing in my house is an old 1980's style television. I don't use to tv but it just sits there and collects dust. The tv is so old a hanger is the antenna and you have to pull a knob to turn on the tv.

the oldest thing in my house currently is the bed that i sleep on ... its actually an antique canopy.... with all the attachments for a mosquito net and the entire bed is totally dismantable.... it comes out in bits and pieces so you can take it where ever you shift your place to.... though its not really all that light as its made out of teak wood or so..... its almost coming to nearly 100 years old....and thats one thing that my parents have told me to get rid of but i put my foot down and told them that no one is supposed to say anything regarding that bed as it smine and i would do what ever i please to do with it..... and that is that i would never give it away for anything... i want to pass it on to my daughter or son when i have one someday..... but i hope that the generation then would appreciate it like how i do right now...though i completely doubt that

The oldest thing in my house would be a trunk I have. I couldn't tell you how old it is. But you can tell by looking at it that they don't make them thsi way anymore. They do however show them in old movies.

I have no idea what the oldest thing in my mobile home is. I would have to say it would be the table that holds our tv. We got it from my husbands grandmother when she went into the nursing home. I mean all of our stuff is old, but I think that's the oldest.

Well, at first I thought it might be my bed, which my third wife and I bought in 1982 (brass bed with intricate backboard), but then I realised it is actually a bookcase a friend made for me in 1974, so it's 34 years old now, and still going strong, although the backing probably needs restapling. The oldest thing in my house is the photos of my parents, which were taken in the thirties of the last century. They are worne out to yellow, but still well narrates the history of their early days in shanghai, for instance, first came in as a student, got married, worked as a clerk, had their first child, etc. I am their eldest daughter, so I kept all of these photos. From time to time, I take them out for a look, sometimes telling my child about who is who. I have been very careful whenever moving to a new place. Not long ago, I had them also kept in disc so that they can be easily circulated among the relatives.
