recliners found in cells Are they kidding?

That is what they call punishment? A jail in northern Texas has been closed and its nearly 60 inmates transferred as authorities investigate what they call dangerous conditions for jailers and those behind bars — including cells that locked from the inside or contained recliners. Some surveillance cameras' cords had been disconnected; recliners were in cells; some bathrooms and cells could be locked from the inside; and inmates had made partitions out of paper towels to block jailers' views inside their cells. One alarming discovery was a type of rack made of nails. Looks like the inmates were in charge. Does this surprise anyone? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/jail_closed;_ylt=AikL0Gx1x0TEhfU_uWmDArYazJV4

It all depends on the jail, warden and the types of criminals. There is a low threat jail in the New England area that has a breakfast buffet for inmates, cable tv, tvs in every cell (prison provided ind you) and the ability to consult with a personal trainer to improve their health. If they had some type of a spa facility and internet service I'd gladly go there for a few months for vacation.

I read about that! That is insane. It sounds like me that the inmates were running the show and there wasn't enough athority to gain the control back. Corrupted jailers and such is a dangerous game to play and I don't think they realize it until it's to late. They said there were unidentified pills thrown all around the floors too. Definitly crazy. My family jailbirds would love it there....

Sounds like they need to tighten things up. This is ridiculous. Criminals need to have it tough in jail and in prison. Why do you think they keep returning? No bills to pay, no job to worry about, no responsibility for their actions, and the opportunity to become educated while they are in there? Come on something must be done about our so called justice system. This is just plain crazy.

It does come to me as a big surprize. What were the prison authorities doing in the first place? they should have been supervising not to allow such things from happening. c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog

From what you say, yes it surprises me. Why would any sane warden allow such a dangerous situation to develop?

Wonder what they had to do special to get that special treatment? Well now they are a new person sworn in and they will be under new rules that they might not like after gettig so much freedom. Although some inmates might have had bad backs and that was their way of helping their back and that meant less money for doctors bills and all. But it does seems strange that with all the warnings and all that something wasn't done sooner. Why wait till someone else was sworn in? Is it to make them look good? I am sure somehting could have been done before if they had wanted to take the action at that time.

I really don't understand this - I cannot figure out how some cells could be locked from the inside unless they were originally built this way. While I don't think that all prisoners need to go someplace like Alcatraz, there does need to be a certain level of realization that this is a punishment and that rights have been taken away as a consequence for a crime committed; I don't think that recliners and partitions meshes with what should be happening in a prison. I do think that prisoners should learn useful skills and get exercise.

This does not surprise me one bit these days. Inmates seem to have it so much better than regular law abiding citizens these days. They get fed three times daily and that is more than most people get.

That is outragous! Jails are supposed to be punishment. Sounds like the inmates had control of the whole place. I think the justice system is too easy on inmates now adays. They hollar when they think a injustice has been done. There was one jail that the inmates hollared because they didn't have color television. Another place inmates were hollaring because their food was cold. Come on these places are jails not hotels are resorts. They shouldn't do the crime if they want certain things.

It is jail not a prison...it sounds like they are low on funding or something..it says they got a citation 3 months before because they didn't have the correct guard-prisoner ratio...and guess what? Who would design the cells to be locked from the INSIDE? It sounds like the governer of Texas, and the mayor of that city...plus the officials of the jail need to take some serious re-doing of the jail's policies, design, and funding for more workers there. Dang it sounds like they have it better than I do. I dont even own a recliner. How is it that a convicted felon has a recliner but the person paying for his upkeep cant afford one. Kinda makes a person angry. Cells that lock from the inside and partitions to block views sounds like they have been living large for some time. Like I said makes me wonder why I have to pay for them but cant afford to pay my own bills. Maybe I need to go to that prison sounds much better than my home and life now lol.
