Potatoes or rice...which would you have in your pantry?

With the rising prices of food these days, I was thinking of buying a bag of potatoes and use them for a whole whatever. There's lots of things you can do with fresh spuds that one would never get bored. Samething can be said about rice. Now, my question is, which foods would you have constantly in your pantry? Would you keep rice or potatoes? The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to say "rice" because it doesn't spoil...but potatoes you can grow easily. I guess it depends how clever one is. *Pleiades

We keep both, as well as several types of pasta. I very seldom eat any of them, however, because I've had bariatric surgery and my diet is very limited (mostly protein with a few veggies. All of those are a good way to stretch your grocery money. My husband prefers rice but I've always loved potatoes.

Yikes! I didn't think of that...nor those who are diabetic or on that Atikin's diet. How's it going for you? *Pleiades

Without a doubt, it would be rice. I can buy rice in bulk so it's relatively cheap and it lasts forever. Potatoes have gotten very pricey. I bought a 10 bl bag on sale last week for $1.99 so I picked up two but a bag in that quantity would typically cost about $6.00. Now I have so many potatoes that I'm looking for potato recipes. You also make a great point about the spoilage factor but I love my potatoes.

Potato soup. Yum. Great idea. I'm in Southern California and it's hot here right now (sorry to those of you that are in the frigid northeast) but I can eat soup anytime.

I must have been the only one that didn't buy potatoes on sale last week! I missed out on it, drat! Anywho, depending on your location, might I recommend a good potato soup? It's warm and delicious. *Pleiades

I always keep rice on hand, but often have potatoes also. My grandfather was a rice farmer in Arkansas. We had rice at almost every meal at my grandparents' house.

Since rice is a staple food in our table in all of our meals so we keep it and we are never run out of rice at home. We make sure that our dispenser has rice on it and we buy when we don not have enough of it. as for potatoes we rarely buy that only when we needed it with the viand that we are cooking. LOL. So that would be rice i should say.

for the pantry, I would choose rice since it last longer. I would say potatoes but you have to go through them quickly before they get old and rot on ya...LOL I love potatoes and we always get a bag at least once a month, but I have to say that I have been getting rice lately and making more dishes with it. I have been trying to experiment and cook a little out of my norm....just to keep the family happy!! LOL, but healhty choice is always an issue as well.

And one thing about children, they don't like having the same thing over and over again...and they all have different taste. *Pleiades

Hey there, I am generally an experimentalist when it comes to food. I love t eat and I do what I love. I like to cook to... since I am an Indian and brought up the India way, I can't really do without both of them, I mean I need rice as well as some vegetable to finish it of, cause dry rice seldom tastes good enough. Ya there are certain dishes one can make but that to requires some vegetables. In case if there is no option left, and am on the last of my pennies, then I will stock up rice rather than stocking up potatoes, for the very same reason that you gave. Take Care God Bless You

hi my dear freind, i am having both everytime in my pantry. we are a family who love to eat rice and potatoes, both so i have to keep then in stock everytime. my hubby love mashed potatoes, french fries, potato dumplings, and many more dishes based on potatoes. and rice is a stsaple food here. our food is just incomplete without rice . if its not served we dont have that filled feeling. we take it everyday little bit. sometime i make biryani, some time i make fried rice with veggies in it. my family members love to have it with curd.

I keep rice in my pantry all the time because it never goes bad, and I keep potatoes whenever I plan to make them because they seem to go bad quickly here. I also keep a lot of different types of pasta.

I keep rice, potatoes, and pasta in the house. They are 3 very versatile ingredients in cooking. I also keep a lot of canned foods in the house like canned tomatoes and green beans. I pick them up when they are on sale and stock up.

I prefer potatoes rather than rice. I always have loved the taste of potatoes. Usually if I eat rice I find it makes me feel sick. So in my pantry you will find potatoes

Being a midwestern girl we used alot of potatoes in our meals. So I usually always have a bag of those on hand. We eat rice too, but we eat potatoes more. Everything from potato soup, mashed potatos, hash browns, you name it.

I'm glad I don't have to choose! I know that if I chose rice, I'd regret not having potatoes and vice versa. The ability to store the rice though would be pretty persuasive though if I could only have one.

Well I have to say that I have both in my pantry. I also have a lot of pastas and canned soups. I think that if I could only choose one though, it would have to be rice. I don't think I would have the patience to grow more potatoes and since rice doesn't spoil it would be easier for me to keep.

We tend to have a collection of both and we do use both. We use potatoes more often but use them in a lot of things. Rice, of course, doesn't spoil and can be used with just about anything as well so we are trying to keep more of it around. We use it a lot for stir fry dishes and sometimes flavor it ourselves for a different touch.

Both. I use rice and potatoes in meals every week. I will serve things like stew, gumbo, or curry over rice. Potatoes I will sometimes do with like meatloaf or some kind of stand-alone meat. Lately I have been doing roasted potato wedges in the oven and they are good.

Rice is our staple food here so I eat rice more than potatoes on every given day. I atleast eat 6 cups of rice a day (includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner) but I love potatoes as well. Specially mashed potatoes with lots of mushroom or chicken gravy. I also eat french fries and some local sweet potatoes here sometimes on a snack or a meal alternative..
