Does anyone like grilled cheese sandwiches and if you do make them do you like to spread butter on the bread? I actually used to do that a lot until my husband introduced me to putting mayonnaise on the slices of bread while cooking. Has anyone ever heard of that idea?

I've heard of it, but I can't stand mayo, so I'm not going to be trying it anytime soon. I tend to use butter, or occasionally just cook my grilled cheese with a bit of cooking spray on the pan instead of spreading anything on it. Which works well. I also like to put tomatoes in my grilled cheeses, if I have any on hand.

Oh, Tomatoes! That does sound good. I have put ham, onion, even pickles on occasion but I never thought of tomatoes... Now I'm hungry! like you I also minimize my use of some butter or margarine and have sometimes bake them in the oven, or grilled them on an indoor grill. Most of the time we don't need to add any extra fat, especially with a grilled cheese, depending on the amount of cheese and the type of cheese you use, they can really pack a lot of fat and calories! That's probably why the tastes so good. Everything that tastes good is generally not so good for us... Happy Mylotting!

I love eating grilled cheese sandwiches but I have never tried it made with mayonnaise before. I have heard of the concept before when I was watching the show called Reba with Reba McEntire and that is how she made hers. I have wanted to try it but haven't so far. I wonder if it can be made with Miracle Whip instead of Mayonnaise since we don't buy mayonnaise?

Hi there, I think the concept is based on the fact that both Miracle Whip and mayonnaise are both made from a base of oil and egg. I think the oils and the egg, fry the bread in much the same way that butter would, and perhaps the eggs brown the bread better than margarine would. (I'm thinking kinda like French toast, and how it grills because of the eggs.) That however is just a guess because I've never used mayonnaise, just butter, happy Mylotting!

I never heard of the idea, but I also probably would not go anywhere near anything involving mayonaise anytime soon. I would use butter, or some kind of spread that is supposedly like butter. Something I also learned is that you can only put so much cheese on the sandwiches for grilling, or it can turn into a sticky mess. I have also tried mozzarella cheese & meunster, but American cheese (a very mild cheddar) is usually the best for me. Something I have yet to try is a triple decker grilled cheese sandwich. I've always used only two slices of bread, & just now thought of the idea of adding a third slice in between.

No, I haven't heard of using mayo instead of butter on a grilled cheese sandwich. And the tomato idea does sound good. I'm thinking of having a grilled cheese sandwich and a nice hot bowl of chili for supper. My husband doesn't eat mayo. And you don't even want to know what he refers to mayo as!!!!! However, I like mayo so I may have to give it a shot.

They are so yummy. I love grilled cheese sandwiches. I love to use a gralic spread on the bread and then add the cheese. So they are kind of like garlic cheese bread and then dip them into some tomato ketchup. Very tasty indeed

I'd never thought of putting anything on the bread, though I have put Worcestershire sauce on the cheese before it melts. I like mayo and cheese together though so I may try it later.

Never heard the mayo idea. I make ours with butter. Is mayo better in anyway? Taste or healthwise?

That is the way my mom used to make them when we were growing up. I guess that is how someone showed my dad to make them, so that is the way she made them for him and for us. I will sometimes use butter and sometimes I will use the mayo.

No I haven't but my honey puts butter on the outside and then a little garlic and Parmesan cheese on it and then fries it.

Hi there, I love grilled cheese sandwiches, I don't seem to eat them very often but I really like them. I have added ham, onions, and even pickles on occasion but have never heard of using mayonnaise instead of butter. There probably really isn't much difference health wise as both are high in saturated fat anyway? I have never tried the mayonnaise, but I will definitely put it in the back of my mind, because as I'm posting this response I remember a situation where I ran out of butter or margarine, because I don't use very much of it, I usually just put mayonnaise or mustard on my sandwiches anyway and skip the butter. If I had thought of mayonnaise I would've been a very happy camper. As it was I was disappointed and still hungry. Happy Mylotting!

Yes I have heard of that, actually my friend in H.S. used Miracle Whip, not mayo. Today when I make them, I use butter on the outside and use mayo on the inside with meat and cheese. My husband likes them with Miracle Whip tho.

We definitely have NOT tried the mayo bit! We used to put butter on the outsides of the bread, then fry them up that way. I made a turkey and cheese sandwich a similar way recently, but instead of butter I used olive oil cooking spray for a healthier sandwich. It tasted just as good to me since I couldn't taste a difference, but of course my picky husband said he'd prefer the butter!
