Banned from Ice cream because of colds?

Have you ever been banned from ice cream because of colds or cough? When I was younger, my parents would not allow us to eat ice cream if we have cough or colds. There are those who say that since colds and coughs come from viruses, what we eat do not really affect our coughs nor does avoiding to eat certain things, enable us to heal faster. i guess not everyone believes that you can't eat ice cream when you have colds. Its really funny because I was having a real bad cold for almost a month and I missed eating ice cream, so I told my husband that I wanted to eat ice cream, thinking that he won't let me and he just said "go ahead" hehe. so, do you think we should avoid eating ice cream if we have colds or cough?

You should avoid any milk products when you have a cold because it makes more mucus. It applies for singing too and I can remember in high school the music director telling us to avoid milk before a concert. Your parents were right.

Oh and when kids have their tonsils out they aren't allowed milk products either for the same reason.

Actually it depends. For us Chinese there is heaty colds and heaty coughs and cold colds and cold coughs. So it depends if its the heaty one eating ice cream will not worsen the condition but cold ones will. But when I was younger, same like you whenever there is a cold or cough, ice cream becomes out of bound for me rule set by my parents and grandparents. But now that I am married....I just eat them anyway. But if it's the cold ones then i would not eat ice cream.........

Hi, how do you know if your cold or cough are the heaty ones or not? I am also Chinese by blood and I think I know what you are talking about. But what I don't know is how to differential the two

i think we have the same mom. they learn that from their moms too. my mom also ban us from cold drinks and ice cream when we have colds and even if we have fever. but as i was getting older at the first sign of colds all i do is drink a lot of cold water. i cant drink water if it is warm or tap water. i can only drink cold water. so on the first sign of colds i drink a lot of cold water then when i wake up next morning colds are gone. lol. so when my children has colds i let them drink something cold and eat ice cream aswell.

maybe it's not really about the cold water but the water itself. There are many articles nowadays that promote water therapy. My parents always reminds me to drink a lot of water too when I have fever or colds, but not specifically cold water, just water. But since you mentioned that you don't drink warm or tap water, then I guess drinking cold water is better than not drinking any at all hehe

That was the one time I was really allowed to have ice cream all day long if I wanted it. I have never heard to not eat ice cream when you have a cold or cough. When I have a cold the ice cream opens my nose up so I can breath and it sooths my throat. I love ice cream.

Really? it allows you to breath better? maybe it depends on the ice cream? I haven't really given it a try, haven't noticed if it does benefit me that way. Maybe I will next time. Thanks!

oh my mom used to ban ice cream every time i had cough and colds but i always went behind her back and ate anyway. i think though that cold food does sometimes make you feel worse if you have cough and colds. maybe the throat gets irritated? i don't really know but i never ever skipped ice cream because of illness

I think that is the reason why your mom won't let you eat ice cream so that you won't feel worse that you are already feeling. But then again, it is still your choice if you want to obey her or not

I don't think that ice cream everyday is good for our health either. I believe that everything should be taken in moderation. so, I guess eating ice cream even if I do have colds is okay

If I have a fever, I do not want ice cream, because it would make me chill. If I am just coughing, it probably would be alright. I was never banned from anything when I had a cold, but I was encouraged to drink extra juice and water and have hot salty soups to make me feel better. I have a bad cold right now, and my husband wanted to get me an iced drink, but the first three days that sounded really bad to me. Today I am wanting iced drinks and your discussion is making me want some ice cream as well. I think my cold is getting better.

According to the traditional Chinese medical theory, it seems it's bad to have ice cream when you are coughing or having colds. Perhaps the ice cream will be too cold for your body when you don't feel well. And ice cream is also sweet, it is likely that you will cough much more because of it. I love China

Quite the contrary. My parents figured it would help a sore throat and/or upset stomach. I have quit eating dairy when I have phelm or mucus build up because it does make that worse.

Hi, silverglint. I am sure that we were not allowed to eat anything cold when we would have a cold. I know now in my family of my own, my husband does not allow our kids to eat anything that is cold when they have a bad cold. This allows their body to heal up. If they eat something cold when they have a cold, they will never get well quicker then.

I've never heard of that actually. I DO know that eating dairy products can make you produce a bit more phlegm. Singers do not drink milk before a performance for that reason. Maybe ice cream would do that to you a little bit if you had a cold already. Otherwise, I think cold things feel wonderful on a sore throat!

You're very right about singers not drinking milk before performances. However, as an ex singer I also know that gargling with some salt water will solve that problem. Dairy products actually thicken the mucous in the back of the throat, but that's not necessarily a bad thing when you have a sore throat because that extra coating can help protect the inflamed tissue. If you don't want to eat dairy while you're sick, popsicles are a great alternative.

well i think when we have cold or cough it would be better not to eat ice creams as when ice cream is cold it will effect the body much and another thing is ice cream is not a naturally come product which is cold it has been in refigerator and made it cold so generally when you eat it you will fell it cool but it will go in body and effect the body system and produce heat which increases the body temperature and well you cold that you have will take time to reduce

I've never heard of this before. As a matter of fact, I was always fed ice cream when I had a sore throat. Even my grandmother, who swears that cold weather causes colds, will feed me ice cream if I'm sick. I say if you're sick and don't have much of an appetite, if you can get some ice cream down then do it!

I understand where your grandmother is coming from, if any of my boys won't eat anything because he is not feeling well, I am very much willing to feed him whatever he wants, as long as he eats something. Even if it means giving him chips or fries.

Okay what I think you are saying is when you are congested from a cold or a cough your parents would keep you away from dairy products, just so happens you remember the ice cream because it is such a treat. It is medically proven that dairy products are not good for congestion and that clear fluids help you to run it through your system quicker and it also stops you from dehydrating. At least I think I have it right.

I wouldn't know why not. With coughs and sore throats ice cream would feel pretty good. I often gave my son sherbert when he was sick as a child. The only time that backfired was when his "bug" turned into the stomach flu. LOL

I think it depends on how the person is being affected. Others say it's a cure for colds while others got worst coughs and colds when they eat ice cream. My daughter isn't affected with her colds and coughs but she's losing her voice once she eat ice cream. Too bad for her as he's often the emcee at school's activities. Probably if you think it's not affecting you when you have colds, then go eat ice cream but if you're aware that it affects you then avoid it.
