Phantom Friend Request

This is a strange situation I've never run into before but maybe someone can help me out. I got a friend request two days ago from a new member who now has just 2 points but when I click on the username the page is blank. The member has no profile, the page is just totally empty! I'm certainly not going to approve the friendship when I have no idea about this member but I'm wondering if it may actually be risky to do so, if it could be some kind of a virus or a hacker! Has anyone else ever run into anything like this? How could a member be able to request a friendship and earn point when there's no profile? Annie

I wonder if that could be that Mylot has already banned them. I noticed going through my friends list, that alot of them no longer have a page or have been deleted. I know that I would not accept.

That's what happened, apparently for the third or fourth time for this particular member. I deleted the request. Annie

It could be he/she closed their account, or myLot booted him/her off. No, I have never come across this. Did he respond to any of your discussions?

Not that I'm aware of. I'd have to go through and look but I don't recall ever seeing anything from this person and it's a username I'd probably have noticed. Annie

I've had that happen before too. Not positive exactly why it happens, but I've always thought it was because the person signed up, got no responses quick enough and decided to quit their membership here. IE: for whatever reason, they have left the site, whether by their own choice, or from being banned due to their responses (or improper questions they asked.) I wouldn't worry too much about it though, Annie, it seems to happen once in a while. I always check out a profile before accepting a request, and if they're 'not there' I just delete the request.

I never approve friends unless I recognize them as someone I've at least been on a thread with. Do you recognize this person at all? I just got a request from someone I recognized immediately since we've been on a lot of threads together and I knew immediately who she was. I approved that one immediately but the other 12 in my mailbox I denied. I swear I've never had any, even marginal, contact with these people and I just don't even know where they come from.

Nope, I didn't recognize him or her at all and he/she only has 2 points. I usually always recognize someone who requests me as a friend and if I don't I still check their profile and most of the time I remember then after looking at some of their activity. This one has no activity! Annie

I've never had that happen before. I don't see how they can send friend requests if they don't have a profile.

Hi annie! I have not experienced this myself, but I have heard other members discussing this and being somewhat confused and concerned just as you are. They described the situation exactly the way you are. I would be very concerned. I believe they reported it to mylot admin. I don't know what happened next. I would report it too. There are just too many strange things happening here. I would be afraid that it could be a virus too. I think the person said that too. I can't even remember who it was or I would tell you.

you have to understand that not all people in mylot are computer or internet savvy. maybe you can help phantom by guiding him to put up his profile for it will help him with the earnings. there are a lot of members who does not know what to do first, i know this because i was one of them 3 years ago. we just have to show them how it is. they are like babies who still is learning how to walk. let us be patient with them.

There are always things that make us sit up and take notice. I don't really bother with them. they seem to be harmless. Cheers!!

I had this happen to me also. truechristianlol requested my friendship. I believe he was banned. I don't automatically approve all friendship requests. I always look at their profile and scan through some of the discussions they have responded to or started, look at their freinds list, etc. To see if we have anything in common. I find it very odd when people request me, that I have NEVER interacted with, so I do my research. I currently have 10 pending requests now. I haven't denied them nor accepted them. I go and check on them occasionally to see if anything new has developed that interests me. In this case, I just hadn't gotten around to checking their profile yet, and by the time I did, POOF! he/she was gone. So I deleted it.

Thanks for the heads up. Keep us informed of the new aliases then as they are discovered. We need rid of these types of trolls.

It's sort of odd but I had someone request to be my friend when I first started here and it was someone with a one behind their name.

Hello anniepa! I guess the new member didn't put any informations about him. Sometimes, people are curious about the site and when they are asked to sign up, they will just up and leave everything blank so that they could see what's going on here in our community. I have never seen like that before but I guess we should really be careful when accpeting friend requests. At first, I just accept and accept, but then when I read how dangerous it is, I looked up the profile first before accepting the requests.

I haven't experienced it myself, but I have been hearing that there are a number of banned people who are constantly setting up new accounts for harassment purposes. When they get banned (again) they just open up more. Some are even going as far as to mimic legitimate members right down to copying their avatar! Maybe this is where your Phantom request came from. I would decline anyone requesting friendship who doesn't have a legitimate-looking account.

Hi Annie! Its really strange but the reality is what you know strange things happen in this cyber world. But you case is a bit different from the usual ones. Now you did the right thing that you went to be assured if the person requesting your friendship really existed or just nothing. But seeing the page without profile is strange. Lets make hypothesis - firstly due to some technical problem at that time the page showed blank, secondly may be after sending you the request the user got his accounted deleted with a prompt request, thirdly you could be absent minded at that moment and therefore the page seemed containing nothing. Or at the worst it could be some hacker... But the entire story is enveloped in a mystery now.

I have received a request which says that he is inactive for the past 60 days but when I checked his profile discussions he has just posted a discussion 15 minutes ago. Something is weird here but I did approve him in the end. I have another one this morning who requested to be my friend and when I check his profile his is only 15 years old. All his posts are on games and children stuff, this one I rejected and probably the first request I have rejected so far. How can I relate or this boy relate to the discussions I made. I am only wasting my time interacting with an under-age. I can't be talking to a small boy when I am in an adult world, right?

I have joined mylot recently and till date i have not experienced anything like this. But after reading your post i will certainly be more cautious from now onwards.Shold we not accept friendship request of member having lesser posts? I do not know or should we check the profile?
