Cash or card.

Lately we rarely see physical cash. We make our money and they are directly deposited or printed on checks and we only see the numbers of how much we have on our statements. Do you still pay and use cash or do you put everything on your card/debit? Card and debit is easier to carry around and maybe safer... but which do you prefer?

I prefer using my debit cards. I no longer have to carry money and pray that no one rips me off and I'm out of whatever cash that I had on me. Now I know that if anyone takes anything from me they'll be left with unusable plastic because I will make sure to cancel the cards as soon as possible. I also don't have to worry about giving or lending money out or feel the need to withhold the truth about not having cash on me for I don't carry cash around anymore. Now I do carry a dollar or two but that's just in case of an emergency. Never know when you need to catch the bus.

That's true. Cash is so flexible that it's gone in a second without claim or proof. And you can be nice at saying 'no', haha. Thanks for sharing!

I hate debit cards and credit card. I have ONE credit card for emergency or rare needs. We pay it off each month most the time and never let it go past 3 months. My husband uses debit but I don't. I use cash. I don't like checks or credit or debit I only use cash all the time. A few times some wanted a debit or credit and I asked them what was wrong with cash as far as I knew it was still legal tender and they had to accept it. They did but wanted debit or credit. Too bad. It is too easy to spend using the others and they can get you in some deep trouble.

Wow, I can't believe a place rejected cash! They will be gone soon, seems like. But what is it that you don't like about these cash substitutes? Do you find the cash just simpler?

I certainly hear you!! People are living lives with things they can't even afford and we are becoming so disconnected with the connection of our money. We never get to touch it anymore after we make it, it simply turns into numbers and poof into your account and we use cards and never see the worth. I'm glad that my parents were strict about money because I think a lot before I buy and only buy what I need.. so I rarely buy.

Once in a while I go the cash route. But I have had my purse stolen before. And cash you cannot get back. But cards you can cancel. And that is what I was told by the police at the time.

I've had my money stolen too and never got it back! I wish I wasn't carrying that cash at that time.

I still carry cash because there are stores here in the Philippines that have no access to debit cards and they prefer cash, but sometimes I used debit card when shopping at the department stores. I don't have credit card because I don't want to bury myself in debts, so I just maintained two debit cards which are more safe.

That is good that you keep your money in control. A lot of the places in my area mostly accept cards now! Cash will become extinct here!

It's crazy how we can obtain things that we can't afford now, we can simply put it on credit.

Yah we can but with some high interest rates..many can give you low rates but we should take into consideration "budgeting"

I don't have credit card, atm card only. But I prefer to carry some cash on me. Because some establishment didn't accept cards.. "Credit is good, but they need cash.." :)

I would prefer to use cash. However, since my debit card gives me cash back at the end of the month I force myself to use it instead.

I rarely carry more than $20.00 in my purse. I can use the debit card like cash which makes it easier for me in case of loss or theft. If you lose money, you aren't going to get it back and with my card, I can just report it, cancel it and get another without any loses incurred. I like the peace of mind that offers.

I prefer using cash, I do not like paying out the service fees. Even though they are only $1.50 individually, if you use the debit card for let's say 10 purchases at different locations, you would have spent $15.00. I would rather spend that on something else as opposed to service fees. There are some places that have a minimum on debit card purchases, so I think cash is better, that is, if you have the cash.

Very true! There are many regulations attached to your cards and you must be careful at that too.. but we do need the cash in our hands to use it. It goes either way.

I put practically everything on my card. I like only having to carry one card, rather than having to worry how much cash I do or don't have, and whether there will be an ATM where I go that won't charge me crazy fees. I also use Mint.com, so all my spending on my cards are tracked and it's easier for me to budget. If I use cash, it obviously doesn't record in my Mint. That's just a small incentive, but it's become part of my daily lifestyle.

I agree that more and more people dont use cash, but credit cards or debit cards are way to easy to use... as I have learned this the hard way and some in my family as well, if you dont keep proper track of your spending, you can seriously mess up your checking account and bounced checks dont come cheap... I have been without credit cards for 10 years now and I am so thankful as they really messed up my credit and I am working very hard to clear it up....now it is only cash for me. I like the idea of debit visa and MC, that you purchase for a sum--then use that amount and then throw it away... that is nice, wish they had those many years ago and I would have never got in the mess I did.

The cards are dangerous and sneeky and it's pretty rude that they let us run wild with it.. but in the end it is our responsibility and cash keeps us there better. Good luck with your credit!!

This is really a question which is going on the minds of old people. They are in a state of confusion whether to use cash or Card. They prefer cash over cards, but that perception is changing now. For younger Generations it is card they prefer. It is easy to carry and you can flaunt your cards to show your pride.keeping those asides, i generally prefer card for the simple and most obvious fact that even if i lose my card there is no chance of losing my hard earned Money Thats what i want. Though it is tedious to get a new one but i am prepared to take those steps as long as my money is safe. Another big bonus of having Card in a country called India is that even if you are pick Pocketed which is rampant you can rest assure that ur money is safe. so youngsters like me prefer Cards which is quite flexible also.

Yes, the safety does last longer using a card than cash because you can't write your name on your cash. Make sure you keep it safe! Thanks for sharing.

My husband and I prefer to use cash for expenses that don't need to be tracked for business. Somehow it just feels cleaner to have paid the cash and to not have today's "fun" sneak up on us at next month's statement. With the economy becoming worse and worse we've also learned some valuable lessons about credit and in the future will be way more likely to use cash, debit or savings instead of credit. My husband and I were just talking about this and he quoted a line from a Stephen King story a few minutes before I came online and found this thread: "It's a cash and carry world. Sometimes you pay a little, sometimes you pay a lot. Sometimes you pay with everything you've got." How true in today's world.

How funny that you came across that right before this, but it's certainly true. Credit is scary thing because of all the interests and imaginary money that come back at you later. I've decided to use my cash more now also.

I prefer credit cards or debit card and mostly the former as I will get a statement. I do get the cashier's receipt but sometimes it is not legible enough and there are some things that I will pay with checks, for instance, I will pay bills with either a check or a debit card. And there are some places that will only accept cash and I will have to use cash in that case. However, when I have cash around, it burns a hole in my purse and I have to get rid of it. As for going overboard with charges, I keep a record of my charges and either have enough money in the bank to cover it or I do not go over a certain amount. I also pay them off as fast as I can.

You seem to have control of your finances and balance all of them out pretty well. It's smartest to use them all balanced and not go over board with all.

I use any of them, cash, card and check. When I pay the monthly bills, usually it's check. For groceries, it's either cash or card. I actually seldom use my card in shopping because if I do use it, I usually go beyond my budget. i most often use my card when dining out.

Hi Lore2009,I guess I'm one of the few that still uses cash. I like to do that because I can readily see what my financial situation is. I do have cards for times when I can't use cash, but cash is the way I usually do business.
