Do you prefer to diet to lose or maintain weight or exercise to lose or maintain

... weight? If you could only choose one to do longterm, which would it be? For me it would definitely be exercise, which I do anyway. I am like Garfield. A diet is a DIE with a T. Don't make me do it and nobody gets hurt. What's easier for you? It's actually healthier to do both if you are trying to lose, and I don't put it down, but if I'm going to choose between having that pie or not, I'll take the pie and chase you around the house later!

Mommyboo Is this pic your little mommyboo, she is adorable. I usually do a combo of diet & exercise, portion control (sweets & bread my weakness)and I suck on those hoodia pops they are quite tasty.

Yes, this is my little mommyboo My worst weakness is carbs... which is probably why I'm such a fan of exercise. I ran distance races back when I was in high school and so it wasn't wrong for me to eat bread and pasta like it was going out of style. Fast forward to mid 30s... I can't just eat like that and sit on my butt, but I LOVE that stuff, so some of my biggest motivation for running is having my carbs lol. I like bread too, especially stuff I make like banana bread, garlic cheese biscuits, and amish friendship bread...

I prefer exercise rather then diet because i cant tolerate hunger, i can exercise for any longer to reduce weight but cant get sick without food. i even get headache easily if i feel hungry. so i always prefer exercising rather then diet.

Same. I've also noticed that as long as I exercise regularly, I'm LESS hungry and don't get the munchies as often as I do when I get lazy and start skipping going to the gym.

what do you want to say a diet is? is it eating less and counting calories, or something else. there's that much out there now it's hard to say what will work and what won't. for me, i love my food, but have cut out sugar in my coffee, plus chocolate expect when i get that chocolate thing. i've also cut out a few other things and eating more healthy. so is that classed as a diet? in my case i say not, i've just changed the what i eat. plus i'm using my work mate as help, on my excerising. he goes running most days, so that gave me more motivation to get up and do something. which i have done. i fixed my bike and go riding, or i go for a long walk each day then do some other excercies with a ab king pro and leg magic. last i knew i'd lost about 4/5 cm from my waist. no weight has come off which is annoying to me. but i do get the feeling of being more toned up, which is better cause i can put up being big muscle wise but not flab. did any of that make sense? we all got to eat.

Yes, it all made sense. When I'm talking about a diet, I'm talking about basically when someone is trying to lose or maintain weight, and the only way to do it is either counting calories (cutting out some things) OR making sure you go to the gym at least 5 days a week, what is your choice? Obviously I said I'd be the one at the gym 5 days a week but that is because I don't WANT to cut out things. I do cut out too much extra sugar since I don't drink regular soda, and I do try to eat more fresh/whole foods but instead of saying no to a cookie or no to a margarita, I just make sure I go to the gym since I don't want to find out I gained 3 lbs... see what I mean here?

Great Discussion! I have been really thinking about which one would I choose to do. For my health, I would just exercise to lose extra body fat, and to maintain the weight that I would lose. I don't want any extra pounds to come creeping on me. I want to be safe than sorry. But, I have been considering taking the powder diet teas and other formulas. I am so afraid to take a diet pill. I am concerned about what side effects that I will get afterwards.

I actually did a bit of both when I was working on getting back into shape but now that I'm just maintaining and trying to stay healthy, I prefer to just exercise. I'm not a glutton very often, honest. I just like to be able to go out and have a nice dinner and a drink on the weekend, get together with friends for dessert, get some goodies with my daughter or bake things with her, and not feel bad or like I shouldn't. I like going to the gym so I guess that's why it's not such a tough choice for me. I have friends there and the atmosphere is motivating, I listen to music most of the time and the time passes quickly. I also think it helps keep me from getting sick every time my kids do lol. I do still eat things like protein bars or protein shakes and take supplements, I think those can fit into any plan. Also fiber, and lots of water.

I too would prefer to do a little of both - Exercise and diet. But since you have asked us to choose one i too would go with Exercise. I feel that is a better and far more healthier way of loosing weight. I go for brisk walks every day and have managed to loose some weight in the past few months , so exercise works for me without conciously cutting down on my diet

I agree. It's just easier for me too, but I don't hate to exercise. I actually am really proud of getting back in shape, and I am conscious that it's something I have to keep up. You never get to a point where you can just STOP because sooner or later you will become... out of shape again. The older you get, the harder it is to get back on your game.

I definately prefer to exercise. I did Medifast once and I lost 40 lbs. BUT I love FOOD - and could not make myself eat the Medifast food anymore. Now I try to run/walk on the treadmill 30 minutes a day and exercise to my lovely collection of workout dvds!

LOL!! I loooove food too much too. Even good stuff. I talked to my husband recently about the fact that I could eat a whole bag of steamed veggies, not just a half cup serving lol. It's just too hard for me to portion control and cut out things like sugar and fat for too long. Whenever I have done things like that, it has only been for a certain amount of time, I have to know there's an end date, a light at the end of the tunnel in order to do it. I think of taking care of yourself as more of a lifestyle, and a lifestyle has to be something maintainable.

Personally I prefer to eat appropriately and healthy and to exercise to maintain my health and well being. If I do both as a rule, I might not need to worry about maintaining or loosing weight :) OF course we don't always do what we feel is better and I'm not an exception LOL As for a preference, I am not really sure. I don't believe in diets as in "extreme" diets, or the ones that cut one or more food groups from what you can eat. They are not healthy. But I don't believe in spending money in the gym either LOL I guess I would be ok, if I was to plan my meals better or cut a number of calories within reason. But I would be ok as well if I was to increase my activity level some more in order to burn more calories.

If I could only choose one, I'd probably sit there in a dither and end up choosing neither.

i would like to try both. the diet should not be too strict, i just cut down the amount of rich food, eat more fruit and vegetables. that's enough for me. as to exercise, it's a bit harder than diet for me, but i love walking. so, these two combine together, the effect would be obvious.

But if you had to choose ONLY one to maintain or lose, what would you choose? I guess the question is - would you rather deprive yourself of yummy stuff or do you hate exercise more? LOL!

I would think loosing weight is not a bad thing, what you must do is balance it with the emals that you take and the excersise that you do .

Def exercise. I love food and don't want to worry about if what I'm eating is going to make me gain weight. Exercise provides you with more energy and gives you a self esteem boost, so I think it's clearly the better choice. Luckily for me I have always been happy at the weight I am, but I still like to keep active. Right now I'm pregnant (only 6 weeks). Its doing things to my body that I did not think about, I have no energy and the nausea is so bad I can barely eat, so it is very hard to exercise right now. Can't wait for the first trimester to be over!

Hehe! I was so good while I was pregnant, I walked and swam - I was still not showing much by the time it was hot here, but I was NAUSEATED and SICK until I was 20 weeks or so lol. Exercise gives me energy and a boost, I feel so much better when I can do it, even just 20-30 min. Part of it for me is being back in shape. I hadn't gotten back to the gym until my daughter was about 2, but I have been pretty active again for the last 3 years I hope you feel better soon, I found out at 6 weeks too (my husband guessed much earlier than that, around 3 weeks) and it was good to finally know why I was so tired I would fall asleep mid conversation and have to run and puke 15 times a day lol.

None of them? LOL! I can't stand avoiding yummy food either. That's why I say exercise. I'm trying to find out how in the world people can deprive themselves, I'm hoping some of the real exercise haters weigh in here.

Both are best to do. I'd rather diet than do exercise, but both are good to do to keep weight down, right? Weight Watchers is a good plan to follow. I'm sure there are people who would rather exercise than diet.

I don't think diets work, because within hours of starting a diet, the body metabolism tends to slow down believing there is a famine. It then tends to stay that way "just in case". I always aim to have a way of eating, not watching the scales or counting the calories but just eating what I know to be healthy. I never snack in between meals or eat junk food. It is just a committed way of eating for me. At first it was a bit of an effort, but nowadays I don't even think about it. I am a therapist and often get people who have been on every diet under the sun. What I do with them is ask them to write down what they eat over the period of a week. Then when they return, we review it, and I invite them to cut out all unnecessary eating, but committing to a new way of eating. On the review, they can often see exactly how they need to be eating and it is at times, quite remarkable how they could not see it before. . Derek

I like to exercise everyday just to keep my body up in shape and so I can be tough and fit. I like to keep a healthy diet, but there is nothing wrong with sneaking in some treats now and then!
