Dont let mankind sour your perception of God.

A few months ago, I had a dream. I was in a prison of some kind. I wanted so desperately to leave the prison for just one week and go on a cruise ship for my friends’ birthday party. My Warden was a blond woman dressed in a white lab coat. She had a stern face, but kind, compassionate eyes. In the dream, I was bargaining with her. I was trying to convince her to let me leave the prison for just one week… I’ll do anything she asks of me. I really wanted to go on the cruise. She seemed reluctant at first. She told me that she could not ensure my safety… and I would be taking a risk. I told her that I am ready, and that I was not afraid. I told her how much I have changed over the years, how strong I have become. She finally gave me permission to go… but only for a week. She also made me promise that I would check in with her once a day. I asked her, how should I contact her to let her know my whereabouts, and let her know I’m ok? She said one word. “Pray.” And then I woke up. I have thought about this dream a lot over the past few months… and pondered its meaning. I remember the way her eyes looked when she said that final word. “Pray.” It was penetrating, and resounding. Since that dream, every night I have “Checked in” with God to let Him know that I am safe, and I thank Him for it. I also go on to thank Him for His continued guidance, and even if His methods and motives are unclear, I thank Him for his blessings… even when they are disguised as curses. My point is this. And I want to pass this on to anyone who will hear it. Don’t let mankind sour your perception of God. Don’t let the self imposed prisons of organized religion, bible thumpers, extremists…. don’t let the fear mongering fire and brimstone preachers or the guilt riddled street preachers scare you into thinking you have no business checking in with God. They have their own motives. they are driven by something else. Don’t let them fool you into thinking they know Gods mind. I live a life that many would say God does not condone. And for too long, I allowed those people to control my perception of Him. But I famally sat down and had an honest coversation with myself, and God. I know now, that God loves me, and it dosent matter what anyone else says. I have a relationship with God, and it WASN’T because of a door to door salesman who scarred me into getting baptized. It WASN’T because of a zealot who brainwashed me into thinking that my soul was in danger of burning for all eternity. I found God on my own terms. And for the first time in my life, I feel like I really “get” it. So I encourage you all… no matter if you see God as a man, a woman, as one, or as many. Find God. But do it on your own terms. You can find God in quiet moments, or in the collective voices of a thousand person choir. You can find God when you smile at a stranger... or when you hug an old and dear friend. He's with you when you feel alone. He is underneath that stone. You do not need permission to seek Him out... and you can take any path you wish to tread. And if you have any doubts… tell Him about them. Have a conversation with Him. Do it however, and wherever feels right for you. Talk to God about your place in the Great Plan. But first – get rid of all your preconceived notions. Forget everything that organized religion has hammered into your head. Dont let mankind try to minic God, and dont let them fool you into thinking you have to follow the same path they did. Let God tell you Himself whatever it is that He needs to say. DON’T let mere mortals speak for Him. And if your feeling like you are lost out at sea… just check in with Him. It’s easy. Just Pray.

I hope I didnt come off sounding preachy. I am not championing for any specific religion. All I am doing is encouraging people to form a relationship with God. Its not my place to tell them the terms. Just find faith... in whatever, and however you can.

I didn't think it sounded preachy. It sounded like you renewed your relationship with God and you wanted to share your experience with people and possibly inspire them to do the same. There was only one place where I somewhat disagreed with you although I understand your sentiment. Many of us have a problem with organized religion, and I understand why... But I still believe that organized religion isn't all bad. I think some good comes out of it. It does serve some purpose... But I know a lot of bad things come out of it too. I guess like everything else in life, unfortuntely, sometimes people can take a relatively good thing and twist it into something bad. That's what religious fantatics do with their religions. You'r post reminded me of a book I read. It's called "Conversations with God". It talked about seeing "God's messages" in every day life. When I was reading your post, it felt to me as if God was trying to get his message out through you.

It also reminded me of a video that my daughter showed me on youtube yesterday. She actually saw a live skit at her school yesterday...she's in a Christian school (long story) and she was very moved by it and looked up the same skit that was on youtube to show it to me. I just tired to find it myself to post here on myLot but I can't remember the name so I can't find it. But bascially the skit shows a girl having a relationship with Jesus...then she encounters different "sins", I gues that start pulling her away from Jesus...and it shows her fighting her way back to him. I think it's one of those things that you can interpret differntly. What you said about not letting those people scare you away from God anymore, just made me think of it. If I can, I'll post a discussion on it after she gets home and I can have her help me look it up.

Exactly! And I'm glad you said that because I did not want to come off sounding preachy. Like you, for example I know you have found "God" through the Pagan path. I love that! And totally respect it. I was on that path myself, untill my steps were guided off. I dont want to sound like a Christian zealot here. Because that is the exact opposite of how I feel. I only encourage people to seek the truth... their methods are rightfully thier own.

Hi Tee, You appear to be very sincere about this and I'm very happy for you. I feel that we all come into this world with a purpose and part of that purpose is to find God. As you know I have no time for any teaching that says this is the only way. When you look at all the different denominations within Christianity all with their teachings based supposedly on the same book, it's enough to make your head spin. At the same time each of them is right for some people at this point in their spiritual evolution. There is a law that governs all things but I doubt if any of us will discover the meaning of life in the here and now. There have been some very enlightened people and Jesus Christ was no doubt, one of the most enlightened. If however, you read the gospels it appears very unlikely that we have even one tenth of his teachings and some of what we do have, has probably been altered. Nevertheless there are glimmers of truth that stand out throughout most of the Bible. Of course God is also found outside of Christianity and outside of Jesus Christ. There are many paths to the mountaintop and we are not to condemn even one of them because for some people it is "the way". If someone sees God in the grass of the field, that's fine because God is there, just as she is within every cell of our body, every tree, every rock, and the far of galaxies of space. Yet as you have discovered, we can each find a personal relationship with him. It is truly a great mystery. Blessings.

Wow, what can I say? This is very profound. I love the way you wrote it, and your dream was amazing. It's true, we should pray and be closer to god in that way, if we are confused or scared, we should pray, if we're not sure about the preacher, or what he's saying, we should pray.

Yes! And I wont even tell you how to pray, I wont even tell you when, where or why. That is not my place. Form a relationship with God that suites you both... and never let anyone scare you away from the path he laid out before you!

Some will swear to you that it's not that easy; but I know from personal experience,IT IS!!! OMG Tee, you NEVER cease to amaze me with your wisdom & insight!!! Where were you when I was lost & looking??? I guess I just had to learn in my own time & on my own terms!!! I didn't have the dream. I watched truly religious friends & could see the peace within them. I just sat down one day & prayed I'm tired of living in hell. I don't know how to open my heart. Please show me the way!! From that second forward I began to feel a bunch of little things that slowly turned into BIG things that totally changed my life. God does NOT shut out the sinner...He LOVES them!!! It's ONLY mankind that shuts out the "perceived" sinner. I know in my heart that as long as I am at peace with God & He's not telling me I'm wrong, that I won't listen to the religious zealots!!! God is smiling tonight because Tee received His message & is sharing it as He intended!!! GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND!!!

Some do not believe it is that easy, PRAY, be thankful for the miracles you have been given each and everyday or even every moment of life. I do not believe in the business of Religion. I believe as it was said long long long time ago, we as an individual are a church within our own heart. I truly believe this with all of my heart. I see people go to their churches do that Sunday thing, do a few things for the kids, then do things to try and bring in more members. Yet, outside of that when they are at home, job, or just out, they do not follow the beliefs they have committed to within the religion they have chosen. I am not saying this about Everyone, thing is there are many that just do the sunday thing and the rest of the week is theirs.. sorta speak.. Do me a favor say a prayer that my daughter and her fiance are able to get through the finacial crunches that they are going through, it is getting real hard to be able to keep the home they are in.

Totally agree, each needs to form a relationship with God in their own way. If you truly seek him, he will be there. Of course not everything in our life is sweet and smooth. Its the lessons of life that are taught to each of us. Who knows as well if something that is going on with you, that it isn't a lesson for someone else to learn.

Have you read the book The Shack. Your dream sounds like something that would have been talked about in that book. I think a relationship with God is like any other relationship which is why I have a hard time understanding why some Christians say its hard to prya...do you talk to your friends easily...it should be the same way with God right

Tea is fine... I love tea :) And y'know Spring, we have gone around in circles about this subject in the past. I just want you to know that you and I are working towards the same end, but we both often take very different approaches. And I really mean it when I say that it is important for everyone to find God on their own terms. I know your heart is in the right place but I would encourage you to be carefull with your words... because people who are "on the fence" about God can be easily pushed to the wrong side if they feel pressured or bullied by His followers. And to be quite honest, I have felt bullied by you in the past, and for a time, it soured my opinion of God. Im not saying that was your intent, but it has been my perception. I have overcome all that though. I have learned that my life is between God and myself... and I will never let anyone come between us again. I do thank you for your kind words here though. Your a good person and you love God feircly. I could never hold that against you. I hope you are doing well also :) Tee

HEAR, HEAR!! I'm with ya 110% on this one, Tee. I have NEVER been scared into believing, nor allowed organized religion dictate to me how and when I worship or communicate or understand God. I have my own relationship with God, and I don't care what anybody else thinks about how or when I do it. It's mine and nobody can take that away from me.

hey Annie! that is how religion should be one person in a personal relationship with their deity of choice not being judged by others no one should ever tell you how to worship your God those same people dont try to tell you how to hang out with your friends or how to be wife your spouse so why do they meddle in your relationship with your God?
