I have just picked some green onions and radishes from my garden but..... my lettuce won't be ready for a week or so. Oh well. This is a photo of the lettuce. I'll buy some tonight. How are things progressing in your garden at this time? Eat anything yet from it? I am munching on radishes as I type. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Does it not take lettuce very long to grow or how long has it been since you got it started. It has been quite some time since we grew any lettuce so I don't really remember.

Just a little longer than the radishes and onions. ANother week or so I'd guess. Head lettuce takes longer but leaf lettuce like this is a short time to harvest. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Ok, thank you for my lettuce lesson. :) I thought iceberg lettuce was head lettuce, do they make leaf lettuce also? Sorry for all the questions.

Hi GRANDPA BOB, They are looking really nice, it won't be too long now,no I haven't grown anything in my garden, not able to this year. I bet those radishes taste delicious, enjoy the fruits or veg of your labour. Tamara

yep i love crunching on radishes, they taste particularly good fresh picked. the lettuces are nearly ready. the peppers, the squashes , the tomatoes need more time. but the rhubarb is thriving, the blueberry bushes and the redcurrants are covered in little berries , just waiting them to ripen up. its certainly a good year for growing fruit and veg.its a pity my cherry tree is allowed to ripen its fruit , the blessed birds pinch all the cherries as they ripen up, little perishers !

I'm glad you posted that picture, I had no idea what home grown lettuce should look like! I have some Romaine and Chard and they are very early in the process. I have no idea what they'll look like when it's time to pick them! When your iceberg is ready, will it look like it does in the grocery store, all round and tight? Just wondering. I don't have anything ready yet but I'm looking forward to some green beans and peas! Only one stalk of corn came up out of 6 so I have to plant some more. Still have to put my potato in the ground to see if I can grow some.

It would be lovely to grow your own fresh lettuce, GB. They are very expensive in Australia at the moment - nearly $4 for a cr@ppy, pathetic specimen which feels really light and doesn't have any heart - just a few scraggly outer leaves. We should start growing our own!

Looking good, Grandpa Bob! My radishes are pretty close to ready - I bet I will be able to dig them up next week. My lettuce is starting to pop up, too. My beans have sprouted and I have a few carrot tops poking up. I need to thin those, but I hate thinning carrots, 'cause it feels like "selective reduction".. I am taking away the lives of tiny baby carrots. My tomatoes look good, except one Early Girl plant, she looks like she's not going to make it. No potato plants or pumpkins yet.

The first few offerings from a garden always taste so good! It's exciting to see it grow, no matter how long you garden. I've made a couple of salads so far. I have romaine lettuce and I use the thinnings, then I planted a mix in a container, so I have to thin that, too. The first planting of radishes are almost finished, another one started. No green onions this year and the peas haven't even started blooming. It's been very wet this spring.

I hope your lettuce turns out really good soon. We have some leaf lettuce, tomatoes and green onions that are doing really well. The tomatoes will be ready to be picked before too long also. I can hardly wait. We are already eating the leaf lettuce and onions.

My radishes came up no problem, but for the last couple weeks have stayed just seedlings, with their two 'baby' leaves, no 'adult' ones. It's like they're in suspended animation.

So far, I've eaten leaf lettuce and green onions from my garden. I'm hoping to have some radishes soon, and some green beans. The only reason I have lettuce is because I planted plants instead of seeds. I don't have much luck with the seeds, though my beans and radishes are from seed, and they seem to be doing well. I've also got some cilantro that I planted from seed. It took awhile, but it's finally coming up. I also have a grape tomato plant that already has little flowers on it, so I may have some of those soon.

The only thing we really have growing that's flourished is our basil. It tastes (and smells) wonderful! Then again, we don't really have all that much growing. However, we are moving into our own house soon and next spring/summer I do plan to grow many more of our own crops! : )

Hi Grandpa Bob, I am wondering why if those are iceberg lettuce you don't thin them out and let them form large firm hearts instead of using them just as loose leafs. I think the crispy leaves from the firm hearts taste much better. I grow both types. I know that it takes longer to get the hearts but they are worth waiting for.

Your lettuce look wonderful!. I am approaching Winter in my country but it´s a very mild winter. So I´m experimenting on placing radishes and potatoes on pots. We´ll see what comes out of it. And next spring, I will have to fence part of the garden for my veggies. Lola, my german shepherd puppy is as naughty as a dog can be.
