Hot cup of tea cooled me down

The temp was over ninety and it was so hot that when I ws in town, I had to go into a friend's shop and sit down. I drank large amounts of water but still did not feel good. When I returned to the office after doing the banking etc I was still feeling a bit wierd from the heat. Definitely not o.k. I had drank more water in the Bank so I knew that I was not dehydrated. However, I made myself a large mug of hot peppermint tea. When I drank the tea I immediately felt better. Now I am wondering why. Do you drink something hot to cool you down?

I cannot recall ever drinking anything hot to cool myself down before. I don't normally drink much in the way of hot beverages though. I will occasionally drink a cup of hot tea or hot apple cider, but not normally when it is hot out. I drink ice cold drinks most of the time.

Well they say that it makes you sweat and that the moisture on your skin actually cools you down....that might be one reason...I am not sure that is true..just something I heard!

Yes, I have. The thing is the hot drink is hotter than the outside temperature and you. When you drink it then you are cooler because the temperature outside or in the room is much cooler than the hot drink is. Therefore the result is you cool down. I hope this made sense, lol.

Of course it makes sense. Nothing like a hot cup of tea to cool you down.

Last year a friend of ours was visiting, and we were out at the fair. It was 90 degrees that day, and we were all over heated. We stopped at a coffee stand. Hubby and I got iced coffees to cool off with. My friend got hot coffee. Afterwards she felt better. She said the heat inside your body helps you adjust, inside and out, to the heat in the air. I guess it makes sense!

Lots of people have given scientific explanations as to why it works but I know it just does work. Try it next time you feel overheated.

Actually I did yesterday. I'd been drinking coffee all day and was fine. It wasn't until I switched to cold soda that I noticed how warm it was in the house!

I loved iced tea too but if I really need to cool down then a hot cup of tea will do the trick anytime. Maybe I will use the freezer story for a discussion. Thaks for that. Am trying to earn money for the cruise end of August.

I normally drink Gatorade because my electolites get off balance drinking and sweating so much. Too much ice water just makes me tired so Gatorade to the rescue.

I have done that a few times too. I mainly like to drink coffee. I have drank that sometimes when I am hot if I already have some made up. I do not especially make it on hot days to cool down though. I prefer cold water instead.

It's a common saying here in the UK, OOOOH have a cup of tea, that'll cool yer down!! To be honest, I've never drunk tea when it's sweltering though because I'm that hot I never fancy it! x

Hey cynthiann! I have never heard that drinking something hot might be the cure for feeling the heat, but who knows! I have definitely been there to the point where I have drank so much water and other liquids and nothing seemed to make me feel better! I never tried to counteract it by drinking something hot! If that worked for you then more power to it! Maybe if I had tried that I wouldn't have felt so sick! I might have to try that the next time I feel like I am going to pass out from the heat!

Opal, if you look back at some of the responses there re lots of scientific explanations as to why this happens. I did not know the science behind it but it works for me. So try it and let me know. You can reach the stage where it is so hot that ice water does nothing to cool you down. I also get sick from the heat and feel nauseous. The peppermint tea works for me but according to the posts that I have received then any hot drink will do the trick. so try it

I have in the past drank tea when feeling hot and it does have the weird effect of cooling you down.

I think that't not the hot tea make you feel cool, just the high temprature! The temprature of the hot tea is higher than the air',so when you drink tea, your temprature become higher than the air',so you feel a little cool.

Hello, This has happen to me several times before in the past, I guess the body accepts hot things in order to get cool, it is the same as taking a hot shower on a hot day, your body will cool down almost instantly. I find when you drink cold things when your hot, you can actually give your body a shock, and you will start to feel light headed and dizzy, untill you gain contious again, I don't know if you had this feeling of shock or not, when you drank the cold cup of water, but I encourage you to also try taking a hot shower when ever you are really hot. Happy My Lotting!

Someone once said to me, "Hot drinks on hot days, cold drinks on cold." Apparently it's less of a shock to the system. I remember having an awful headache one day, paracetamol wouldn't shift it, and I felt terrible. About 3pm I suddenly got a craving for a cup of coffee - and thought it was a bad idea as caffine dehydrates you, but I had one anyway. Within about 20 minutes the headache had completely gone.

I can see the sense of this. But I did not realise that it was a shock to the system

Hi Cynthiann, I always have hot drinks in the heat as it brings my body temperature up higher so I don't feel as hot myself from the outside heat. In winter if you have a cold drink it cools your blood temp down so you don't feel as cold if that makes sense. I guess that is why they eat hot spicy curries in India plus it keeps the meat from going off in the heat too. LOL. Huggles Ellie :D

You must take care too. Today is the opposit, the sea is so calm like an icing rink. This is a sign that we will get rain and lots of it. Had a bit in the night and it did cool down the place. Hav eyo never tried the herbel teas like peppermint? They are very relaxing and I have several cups of tea a day. The frioty oners are great too.

Yup, not only does the hot dirnk make u adjust, but it makes you slighlty warmer s o yo sweat more hence cooling you down. Weird right :P but its all scientifically proven :D Dylan

I know some people who would drink coffee under the sun, but I'm not one that is capable of doing so. Even if I drink tea in a cool place, I feel dehydrated. And recently, if I drink hot tea I usually need to follow this with something cold because I feel like I can't breathe to good. But as for the hot thing to cool you down trick, i'm supposing it cools you down because of body temperature regulation where the body is sensing an increase in temp and tries to cool itself down by removing heat by sweating.
