Heart Attack

My Aunt Melba had a heart attack early this morning. She is being sent to a hospital in Tulsa (she lives in a small town an hour an a half away from Tulsa). My parents called me and let me know they were going to Tulsa about an hour ago. Tulsa is about 2 1/2 hours from where we live. She is in her seventies, but looks like she is in her late fifties. She takes marvelous care of herself. She's fit, eats right, even grows her own vegetables. She also takes care of her husband, who is in his eighties. He had a stroke a few years ago, which left him in need of a bit more care. She has to help him get dressed, and into the car, but otherwise he can take care of himself. I get a feeling things will turn out okay. Right now I'm sure her other brothers and sisters are headed to see her, along with her kids. Who was the last person you knew to have a heart attack, and did they recover?

I'm sorry to hear about your Aunt. Sorry it took me so long to find out about it. I hope she's doing well. I'm not sure of the last person I know that had a heart attack but my sister-in-law had a stroke in June. She's only 30 years old. She's okay now other then having mild issues with her left side. She'll recover from it completely though.

Was your sister-in-law pregnant when she had the stroke? I'm asking because I have been reading several stories about women who just gave birth or about to give birth who have had strokes.

No she wasn't. She has epilepsy, seizures, they think that her last attack of seizures caused the stroke. She had over 100 mini seizures all at one time and the stroke during the seizures.

GOOD MORNING AMBIE, I sure hope your aunt gets along alright & recovers soon. Are they going to have to do surgery? Two of my best friend's husbands had heart attackes this last year. They are doing very well. Let me know how your aunt is. I said a prayer for her.

Well, now I'm not so sure if she'll have to have surgery. I thought not, but this morning they told one of her sons, that this could happen again within the next four months. I don't get it. They put in one stent, and will treat the other 70% blocked artery with Plavix. But she might have a reoccurance? I guess I just don't understand the medical talk.

I know exactly what u mean about not understanding medical talk. Sometimes i don't think they know what they are saying anyway. They blow alot of hot air . I hope your aunt gets all better. It is very scary to me to depend on some of the doctors we have. Their main worry is the big bucks they make not your health.

I got it. Wrote a long reply and then got logged off. It didn't even save it. I abandoned it, but I'm going to start it over again tonight. Cox is going to hear from me about quite a few things.

gosh, I don't know that I know anyone who's had a heart attack since dad did in like 1982 - not to say I don't know someone who's had one, but I don't know that they have - mom's friend had double bypass surgery a couple of years ago, but I don't know if she had a heart attack or not.

well, I seem to live at the doctor's office - maybe not as much since I retired - I SWEAR that office was a "sick building" and I was much sicker after being in it than I had been before - and it didn't help that there were some toxic people around too

My boyfriend had a heart attack in the past and for the most part is healthy now. My grandfather had a heart attack in his fifties but actually lived to be 90. He changed his diet around quite a bit though, lost weight and became alot more concerned with what he was eating. he had many healthy years after his heart attack. I think she will recover. I hope so.

I'm confused about the news she got today. They said they put a stent in, and will treat the other artery that is "only" 70% blocked, with the medication Plavix. But this morning they said this could reoccur in the next four months.

That's terrible! I'll be praying for your Aunt and hope that she recovers quickly. With proper medical care, I believe the survival rates for heart attacks is pretty high, especially if it's the first one. I think some people have an inherited likelihood for them. A former boss (who's father passed young from undetected heart disease) was always fearful of having one. So, he maintain a strict vegetariam diet, got lots of exercise, didn't smoke, etc. He still ended up having one, but he's still very much alive 20 years later.

I fear heart attacks less for people than strokes. I've seen what both can do to people, and the stroke thing is incredibly frightening (not that heart attacks aren't). My Uncle Larry (my dad's brother, also Melba's brother) had a heart attack and a triple bypass about six years ago. He had not been taking care of himself, but after that, he has and he is doing well. He was around sixty. I just got word about my Aunt Melba. They put in a stent, and she has another artery 70% blocked, but they want to treat that with Plavix. However, they don't know how much damage has been done to her heart. Apparently, the doctors said she had the heart attack Sunday! After the surgery she told my family that she just thought it was a bad pain, but nothing too bad. But by 4am this morning she couldn't take it.

It's a good thing she called her doctor and went to the hospital! It's so much harder to tell for women, that they are having a heart attack. The symptoms are entirely different than they are for men. I'm glad things seem to be going well for her and I hope she continues to recover quickly.

It has been a week since you started this discussion and I hope things have improved with your Aunt, and I am sure that there have been many praying for her as well. I know that it can be hard when Relatives have problems unexpected but unfortunately things happen to the Best of people for sure. My grandmother had a couple of strokes back in the 90s, and that is actually what finally killed her, and then Heart related issues killed my Mom, but I know that no matter what all you can really do is take care of yourself the Best you can and hope for the Best in the end.

OH ambie, I am so sorry to hear that. But I am confident that everything will work out and that she will recuperate in no time. It's a good thing that she takes good care of herself or it would be more complicated to get better. A big hug for you and your family.

i hope that she will be fine soon . i do appreciate the person like your Aunt Melba. It's good to take good care of oneself and others when she or he grows old. It's unavoidable to get old for everyone but the most important is the living attitude you choose . Someone might give themselves up when they are old. Someone like your Aunt just lives a good life !!!

My grandfather had a heart attack a few years ago and then underwent a double bi-pass surgery when he was about 82. He is alive and kicking still. Everyone handles things differently though. I really hope that she is ok.
