I love my new friends on my yard. I have at least 4 toads living on my yard. One is quite big, one medium size and 2 miniatures. Small toads are very small. One is black and is less than one inch long, second is light brown and is an about 1.5 long. I am very careful not to scare them. My dogs no longer pay attention and let them stay on my yard. I just learned that toads can live 7-14 years, so maybe my toads will stay with me and be my friends. Can I have toad as my pet? Do you have any unusual pets?

We just have cats and fish, but we do have frogs and/or toads in the yard occasionally, lizards too. Also snakes, rabbits, mice, skunks and many other things.

You can have toads as pets, and look out for their interests, but I imagine they will do their best living in your yard. I think if they feel safe there, they certainly will stay for many years. I do not have any unusual pets.

I didn't mean to keep them in my house, rather to be able to come close without scaring them and make them jump away....I let them to enjoy jumping on my yard and be happy...

Sounds like a family of toads. Do they have a little house somewhere, with white picket fence and all?

I had two big toads for pets when I was a kid. One has a reddish belly so his name was ketchup and the other one had a yellowish belly so his name was mustard. Well I can't really say they were pets, but they were always in my yard pretty much in the same area. Now I only have cats and fish as pets.

I love my new friend. I have atleast 50 friends in the circle. I too have pet animals. The name i have chosen is Pinky and Pappu, my favourite pet dogs. During night times, when we send her out, she knocks the door and make us angry. But, still, I love my friend very much.

We don't have any toads around, but at my parent's house we can find a frog or two. My dog loves playing with them. He doesn't hurt them, he just chases them. He waits until they hop and then circles them. He'll kind of whine when the frog doesn't move, and tentatively put his nose close to the frog. It's so cute.

Hi Pola! It sounds interesting that you are bringing up and taking care of toads as your friends. Hopefully, your dog understand your 'friendship' with toads and does not disturb you. I did not have any such opportunity. I hope that your new found friends would give you good company and would keep you in good humour. have a nice day! Deepak

In the Southwest I had tarantulas that hung around the house and I thought they were cool, my boys liked them, too. Other than that, no. If there were toads or anything in my yard now, Cookie my rat terrier would make short work of them. She's killed two birds this month, snatched them right out of the air. Sadly, I couldn't save them and she's just doing her "job" as dictated by her instincts.

They are very gentle creatures, and very timid. They won't bite unless you provoke them--and I mean really provoke!! They'll rear up and threaten, then run. After a few times of this, you just might get bitten but it's a last resort for the poor thing. They used to flee to our garage when the heavy rains came and camp there till their little homes were drained out. They would crawl into my hand and let me look at them then when I put them next to something they could crawl onto, they'd walk off. They're very sweet!

I remember when i was a kid we had toads in our yard and the vacant lot next door. Alot of them. There were little ones too. How cute they were. I remember thinking how strange that they look so much like a frog but then why didnt they start from a tadpole like a frog. They also perfered things a bit dryer than the frogs liked. So how are they born from as egg or live birth?

Well she's not my pet but she's been a resident for a long time now. I have a black widow spider between the screen door and the house. When I go by I always look in on her to see if she's still around and so far she's still there. When the porch light is on, is her favorite time as it attracts bugs and she has a chance for dinner. I think she keeps alot of them from comming in, so she's ok in my book. I also have a tree frog in my little fern tree, also not really a pet but he's always there making his noise. Lol. The strangest pet I keep are three ant lions, I have three seperate large flower pots filled with loose dirt and one in each. They can take up to 3 years to become flying adults, or so I've heard. So one day they will emerge with their wings and I will have to say good bye and let them fly off into the night. But for now I enjoy taking care of them and having them. :D

I know how you feel, I'm not fond of many insect myself. They all have some role to play, honey bees polinate plants, spiders help to control over population of some insects and catch pests like moquitos, and many provide food to small animals and rodents who in turn provide food for larger animals. Yes they are creepy crawlies but are an important, and play a big part in the food chain. I hope you have a wonderful day, take care :D

I have heard of people having pet frogs and my nieces and nephews loves to catch them and keep them a few days before we make them let them loose. For some reason they have a fascination with the tadpoles and catching them and watching them grow. I didn't however know they lived that long that is a long time t love for a frog. Heck some animals don't even have that lifespan. Well, good luck in having those frogs as pets..now you just gotta figure out what to feed them, what kind of bugs besides flies.

I love animals of any kind, and would something similar to you. My wife and I are house sitting in country Victoria in Australia, and we have lots of new friends. There are about fifty or more kangaroos in the area, that unfortunately are being driven off their habitat, and further back into bushlands by the developement. They are wild, but also very inquisitive, so come to within about 15 meters. I would love to have one or two as pets, as would my Thai wife, who is more used to seeing elephants and monkies from the front door.

American Black Swallowtail Butterfly - Image of American Black Swallowtail Butterfly
aww--I think that's cute that you have a little "family" of toads. well besides having cats all my life, I've also had birds and not just "pet" types birds like the parakeets I had, but rescued sparrows and a starling that I kept until they were strong enough to release, also I've had mice...and the most unusual? Crickets...yes crickets..having them was like having a bit of the country feel all year long as I love the sound of them Another unusual pet...very short lived was a rescued American Black Swallowtail butterfly..it's wing was just slightly busted so couldn't fly...so took it home...it only lived one day though Here's a photo of it while it was still outside....
