OUCH!! Fellow Cat Owners. Has This Ever Happened to You?

I was sitting here on the couch MyLotting, and my cat was sleeping next to me. I reached out to give him a little pat, and as soon as I touched him he made a loud hiss, and clawed a chunk out of one of my fingers. Have you ever accidentally startled a sleeping cat, and gotten clawed? This one really needs to have his friggen claws clipped!!

That has happened to me before also and the cat was not sleeping. This cat jumped up in my lap and wanted me to hold it so I did. the next thing I knew, it clawed me down my neck and made me bleed and I dumped hot coffee in my lap too. Cats are too moody for me. You never know what they will do.

No, my cat is sleeping well. It's doesn't happen to me, your cat must have short claw.

No, I haven't had any of them hiss and claw a chunk out of me. Khuay (the cat in my avatar) will nearly jump out of his skin if I touch him when he is going to sleep. He also will jump if he is jumping up on the couch beside me and I move my hand, or if I move my foot, or sneeze, belch, fart or my stomach growls. But the other three are really laid back and don't have a problem with them getting upset if I touch them while they're sleeping. I still haven't gotten used to Khuay being so jumpy!

LOL After having so many cats from the time I was a tiny tot, I've learned to wake a sleeping cat ever so gently!! I usually talk really softly to them first and touch them very lightly as I call out their name before stroking them. That way they know it's me and that they've not been had. lol Lesson learned, eh?

So far, I've been fast enough to get out of the way before getting clawed. Usually they are lying on their backs when it happens.

LOL, Danish...yes, I've had this happen to me. However, mine is a biter...well, "mouther". One of our Himalayans is deaf, so she can't hear you coming to pet her. If she's asleep, it totally freaks here out and she will whip her head around, putting her teeth on your hand, as if to say 'Back off or I'll sink in!'. We know now to be cautious and try wake her in other ways (like with a feather or brush) so that our hands are safe. Best of luck with your kitty! :)

I've awaken more than a few cats to my own injury. And if the claws get me, they get them clipped!

um.. not that i recall lately..usually they just sit up and go "BRrrrr?" if you startle them.if it's another cat touching them though, that's a different story.

sometimes my cat is like that. if i disturb him in his sleep, he gets mad. once i woke him up and scared him. maybe he was dreaming, and i had messed up his sweet dreams. i like to joke around with my cat.

This is why I don't have cats. I would have tossed that thing across the room! Let sleeping dogs lay and don't bother a friggen cat. Have the sucker declawed and then mess with it day in and day out. I'm not an animal fan, can't cha tell.

Yep, one of the joys of being owned by a cat. I have a cat that's 'moody' and you have to be careful how you approach him. He hissed at the other cat because she got to close to him, yet the other night she was sitting on him like a chair, with her paws hanging over his head!

Oh yeah I have done this a lot. I love to startle my cat actually, and it has become sort of a game for us. I swear she pretends to be asleep just so I wake her up. However I don't just pet her, I grab her and pick her up, so that her paws are held to her body and then I just have to worry about her head. :D I have gotten it down so I can have her held to my chest before she can even strike, and although her body is tense and I can tell I startled her once she hears my heart beat she starts to purr and relax.

Wow Danishcanadian That sounds really paninful! I have never had that happen to me with my cat Jinx if he is startled he just jumps out of his skin actually he is quite a jumpy little fellow when it comes to loud or sudden noises of any kind but I imagine most cats are that way. As far as what your cat did to you sounds like he was ejoying his sleep a lot and you just happen to startle him on the wrong day.

LOL. Rule of thumb: never touch a sleeping cat, unless they're kittens. There are some areas where they feel sore and will really claw and hiss when you get to touch that particular area. For my cat Spot, she doesn't want to be touched on her belly but will rub her head and whole body on my legs and hand. I guess its their "tickle" area too, that's why they would not want to be touched. I always wait for them to come over, rather than touch them when they're sleeping or licking their paws.

Oh yes, one of my cats was lying on her back and so I decided to tickle her stomach - BAD idea! She tolerated this for about 2 seconds and then sank all her claws and her teeth into my hand For another 2 seconds she never moved and I never moved because if I moved I knew that she'd be scratching and biting in ernest. But I had to move because there was no other way of extracting my hand from this feline bear trap. As soon as I did move she went at it with all four sets of claws and her teeth and I ended up with several deep scratches and bite marks in my hand. I should have known better to try and scratch her tummy. Though she will tolerate it sometimes, not this time though.

I don't deal with cats, but I have a grand daughter who likes to claw or pinch with her little finger nails on Nana's neck or arms. She doesn't have to be startled each time either and I even have a scare on my face where she gave me a good scratch there.

Omg YES ! That has happened before, espeially with my overweight white cat. she digs her claws in me all the time, and more so if i startle her when she's sleeping. I've even got scars from where she's dug her claws into me. Now when she sleeps, if I wanna pet her, I call out her name first and wake her up THEN pet her lol

Yes I have experienced it too but thank god i was not scratched by my little kitten. As for you, are you alright? Did you see a doctor after that? or that is not serious enough.

I have a couple of cats that are jumpy like that. Some of mine are very laid back, but I have one in particular that if you pet her when asleep she wakes up startled and bites or threatened with claws. Some cats are just wound up more tightly than others.
