My brother walks to school to save bus money

United States
August 26, 2009 6:29pm CST
The bus price raised again and the school no longer have bus services so no my brother walks to school to save money since my mother is currently unemployed. It takes about an hour for him to walk to school so he has to wake up especially early. I tell him to take the bus in the morning and walk home in the afternoon but he says he's alright with walking Any of you out there needing to save money like that?

Hi animegirl334, I am sorry. This is so sad. I did walk to college, and walked back from office when my initial pay was not enough or when I was returning too late from work. But this is so sad. How much would it cost him? It will affect his education as well, as he would be too tired to study. It is very mature of him to say that he's alright with it. Wish I could help.

One hour of walking is about 4 to 6 miles depending on how quick you walk. A round of golf is about 4 miles. Let's get this into perspective. A kid can run 4 miles easily let alone walk!

Thanks for your kind words. It is not too horrible though. I'm not sure what the bus rates are but I know they were raised by 50 percent. My mother did offer to pay for a bus pass but he say he's alright with walking. I hope it doesn't affect his studies

How old is he? And it will affect his studies. Well, it is one thing to play - which is a way to relax, and another thing to walk that distance alone, which I am sure must be tension filled due to traffic and need to reach the destination in time. I read smacksman's post. I agree kids can cover 4 miles + in an hour. But the point is at what expense. Running round the grounds is a once in a blue moon acitivity, and therefore, the kid will be enthused to do it. Doing it under stressful conditions is an entirely different ball of game. At least I feel that way.

I did when I was tudying and spent the accumulated money in royal style. Walking to scholl or work in the morning is a good exercise and he thus benefits from saving money for his mother and two, he gets the best exercise available. I think more and more people should walk to work or school, provided its within walkable distance. Besides, your brother is doing what I woud do for my mother, support her as much as possible. Great going!

I agree it is good exercise. Most people pay money each month to go to the gym and he gets fresh air and exercise for free. That's the glass half full view. I'm glad to hear you are also so caring for your mother like my brother. Thanks for your response.

uh-oh...my heart breaks everytime i hear stories like that. I have a 14-year old son whom i drive to school and back everyday... at times I cn't pick him up, he comes home really very tired.. if your brother does that everyday, it must be a lot of effort for his part. i applaud him for being very considerate towards your mom..knowing you need to save mney for the moment... he is gonna grow very successful one day,, he knows how to tighten his belt!

I'm glad your able to drive your son to school everyday. My brother doesn't come home tired but maybe he's just hiding it. It is a lot of effort on his part. He's tightening his belt but only in the money sense since my mother feed him extra for doing this. ^~^ Ah, less food for me but also good for my diet. Thanks for your response.

Same here anime, in as much as we hate to...we would have to put off a lot of the things we love to do or buy to make way for the things that are really necessary. I would probably be a different person if I didn't have a child. But having big responsibilities have truly taught me great lessons in life. And I am thankful. But hey, here I am...still holding up!

I don't pay ticket for public transports because the control can do nothing to me. If the come into the bus they ask for ticket and I say " I dont have a ticket" they ask me for identity card but I say I don't have an identity card, and then They can call the police but they know I would escaped before the police can arrive and they won't have a problems with police. You can travel for free in Zagreb and they can do nothing to you.

Is the bus expensive where you are? Over here, there are sometimes a police officer on the bus so that people couldn't get onto the bus and not pay money. If caught, it's a heavy fine so maybe it is better to pay. Thanks for your response.

Yes, it is great exercise to walk/bike instead of taking a bus or driving. Maybe my brother should also bike but I'm not sure how his navigating skills is especially since there's cars. Thanks for you response

He should learn the highway codes. If possible wear a reflective vest. I used to ride a bike to work, and was considered an oddity because I used the necessary hand signals. The problem with most cyclists is that they think they own the road. They do not give any signal to broadcast their intention of say turning to the right.

I cycled to school all my days. Never thought anything about it - it is just what you did. Most children today are so soft. I even heard one mother say she was stopping her son playing rugby because he got injured! Please!

Yes, children do need certain experiences to grow and some parents are a little too protective. Definitely not my mother though. My brother has feel many times roller blading but my mother still lets him play. He says he's a boy and not worried about scratches and scars. I try to teach him some technique so he wouldn't fall but he's a strong boy no matter. Thanks for your response.

Hi animegirl, may I ask the age of your brother?
• United States
28 Aug 09
My brother is 14 years old. He's really tall and I guess it's because of all the exercise he gets and the fact that he's not afraid of work. Why did you want to know his age?

I think that a good thing to do nowadays specially we are in crisis. Sometimes I walk even I do have money. We just not save money but it is also good for our health. Walking is another form of exercise...

It is a good way to save a little money. It is also good exercise. I've heard that walking 30 minutes a day reduces pains and illness. My brother is going to be so healthy I just hope he could focus on his studies though. Thanks for your response.

that's good to know. meaning not only you can save money but also allow him to explore the place he's walking too and get a bit of exercise. is the bus airconditioned? how could they raised school bus fairs..well, he'll get tired and sweat for sure if he walks straight to school in the morning.

You're so lucky to have wealthy parents. I'm glad you're also learning to earn money by yourself. I've tried looking for jobs to help out my family but it's very hard for students to find jobs here. Guess I have to wait awhile. Thanks for your response

Ya i perform this activity but very often some times when i feel the distance is not much to justify the bus price ,i prefer to walk. But as you say 2 hours of walk this is too much for me . What i think he should go to school by bus because 1 hour of walk makes a person tired and exhausted how can he be able to pay complete attention towards his studies. Its fine to walk home in the afternoon.
• United States
28 Aug 09
That is what I also suggested, for him to only walk home in the afternoon, but he is very stubborn!! It is good he does this for the family and though he seems fine with the walking, me and my mother wants him to watch out for his health too. Thanks for responding.

Actually, I have the same experience as your brother, but I walk during the afternoon so I can be very fresh when I arrive in school. I walk almost 10miles a day just to save money.

10 miles?! That's a lot of walking. You must be very healthy after getting so much exercise. I'm still trying to convince my brother to take the bus in the morning so he can be fresh for his classes. Thanks for your response.

Your brother is very considerate. I think he will become to be a successful man one day. Everyday I go to work and go home on foot for about half an hour. It's OK because it is not so long time. As the bus is not so nearby to my office. So it is much more convenient for me to go to work on foot. I don't like waiting for the bus. I love China

I also believe he would become a very successful man one day. It does get crowded on the bus so maybe it is better for him to get to school on foot but another mylotter has also suggested it might affect his learning. I don't know what to think right now but thank you for responding

I completely understand why your brother choose to walk instead of riding the bus. My son and I did the same thing last school year. But in our case, it only takes 10-15 minutes to walk from our house to his preschool. The school is just outside the subdivision where we live in. Tricycles are the main transportation inside the subdivision. We need to pay P20.00 for each person and that's payment for one way only. Sometimes, we walked. But other times, the intense heat of the sun was so overwhelming that I didn't look at the tricycle fare anymore. I couldn't bare to see my young son suffering from the intense heat just so we can save a few pesos. Now, my cousin who studies in college is doing the same thing. She allots an extra hour for her "walking time". She takes a short cut leading to the main road so she doesn't have to ride the tricycle to leave our subdivision.

The child's health is definitely more important than saving some money so it is good to let him use the tricycles every once in awhile. He is really young if he's in preschool but it is good he learns a little about saving money in little ways. I worry about my brother's safety sometime since it is not yet light out when he leaves the house but then he's a big guy and even taller than me so I don't worry that much. Thanks for your response

I agree money should be spent wisely in the current economic state we are in. Money is a little tight in our house but we are surviving. I'm sorry too that you don't have much income but the government is taking care of you in the least. And then there is mylot where we can happily spend our hours and get some much needed money. Thank you so much for responding

wow, that's a very long walk. I ever walked home from work, about 1 1/2 hours walk, but not for saving money. I walked to ward off the work stress. Just needed to get over something. Sometimes when the weather is good, I'm tempted to walk home too. Hope the gas price comes down and your mother can get a job soon.

Yes, it is a long walk. Like you said, sometimes a long walk is good for a little time for yourself to think but I think it might be a little too much for my brother to walk everyday. I hope the gas price comes down too. Thanks for your response

I want to appreciate him for doing this. Not only for walking. But it seems he has understood the situation of economic and he don't like to over load you family. But I feel walking for an hour may make him too tired in the morning and he may not be able listen to the lessen properly. But in the past , most of us did the same and studied well. But the foods habit of the past is much different than now we are having. We were able to work physically hard because of that. But this may not be possible for the yougsters.AS you told , make him to come on walk only in his return and what about cycling? Both cycling and walking are the best exercise as well as the saving method. You can send him in a cycle and it will be the better option and will not take much time to reach the school and also he will not feel any tiredness.

Yes, I also worry it might affect his studies. I think it would be better if he only walks home in the afternoon. He is a little stubborn even if what he is doing is a good thing. Maybe I should also wake early to make him some breakfast so doesn't always have to eat cold cereal. Thanks for your response
