What Is The Devil's Music?

United States
September 21, 2009 1:19am CST
The reason why I asked this question because I like to listen to hip-hop, pop, and r&b music and when I am around older people or church-going people they said that it is the devil's music and I am going to hell. But, I thought music is music and it is something that people can express themselves through. Can someone tell me if I am listen to music that is wrong, because I love listening to music and I can not help myself?

I don't think that music itself can ever be inherently "evil". However, the content of the lyrics may be questionable and if you ARE that way inclined, you may want to ask yourself whether you want those sort of ideas constantly pumping in your ears. I mean, I've heard Christian bands who express themselves through hard rock and you wouldn't say that they're "from the Devil" or anything. That's because their lyrics are based around their faith. So yeah. I think music is just music. If you stripped all the lyrics from songs and just let the instruments play, you can't really judge it to be "morally wrong" or anything. Yeah, I think the difference is definitely in the lyrics of a song.

I do not mind listening to that kind of music. I think the lyrics made be a little bit out of the way but, I do not act upon what the song is saying. I do not believe in the music or anything like that I just enjoy listening to the song.

There is no such thing as devils music inmy opinion. In my experience people always used to refer to heavy rock music as being linked to the occult and I even read stories in the newspapers claiming people had committed crime due to the type of music they listened to. I think this is rubbish.

I agree with you geebobuk, I think that music do not make people do bad things. I think that everyone has a choice and they choose to do these bad things. I think it is rubbish as well for them to called it the devil's music. Thanks for the comment and take care.

Oh good heavens! Another way for the church to control a person. Sorry, I'm anti-organized religion for the very reason you asked your question. Music is expression, not devil music. Listen all you want and don't feel guilty. You won't go to hell for listening to music, no HUMAN being can predict if you go to hell or not. That is up to God. By the way, I don't believe in hell or the devil.

From what I understand...the devil doesn't sing, read, write or compose music, let alone even listen to it. You go ahead. Listen to whatever music you desire, and pay no attention to anyone else's personal phobias. Music is the song of life, and one of God's greatest gifts to the world. cdrxo

I guess it's any form of secular music. At one time jazz was even considered the devil's music. You're not doing anything wrong by listening to secular music, even if some of the content is a little questionable. You just gotta do what you want and ignore them.

Thanks for the comment, and I just love listening to all of kinds of music. But, I always wanted to ask them to show it to me where it says that in the bible. I do not know why they say that and they should not be judging someone because of the kind of music they listen to

Hello No my mom use to tell me that all the time, and she would not allow us to listen to music on sundays at all, she made sundays a day we did not like to see, some t.v shows we could not watch, listen to your music, just be respectful about it, now I don't like rap and alot of the lyrics can be disrespectful so when you around people that are older I would say don't listen to rap, other than that my friend, enjoy your music Thank you, have fun.

But, I thought music is music and it is something that people can express themselves through which is very true and in turn it helps us to express ourselves or get out our feelings etc...IMO there is no such thing as the Devils Music..thats just yet another scapegoat by the church to get ppl to conform which is just silly IMO...but thats the way some ppl are... Like it was mentioned by another poster, at one point Jazz was considered "evil" as were places like Juke Joints and so on... If the music you listen to makes you happy and gets you to get up and dance through life then HAVE AT IT!! we need more happy dancing ppl in this world of ours

No, you're not doing anything wrong, if you like that music, listen to it.It doesn´t mean that people who call it the devil's musci are entirely wrong, in fact, I can understand where it comes from. God is associated with harmony, beautiful rhytms, love, etc. So by association, everything that is not harmonious, or even hateful, is associated with the devil. Your brainwaves show a more harmonic pattern when you listen to, lets say, a fugue by Bach, and the just go awry when you listen to hard rock or similar, more un-harmonious, music. Mind you, I don´t agree at all when people call it the devil's music and, by association, label you as a sinner when you listen to it. It´s just that they don´t know and are caught in their superstitious beliefs.

Even i too heard this word from my relatives that songs with very fast drum beats are devils music but the reason old people say that because they do not like to listen to the modern rock and trance music that we listen too.Even i am too a christian and nowadays christian artists are making songs in dance and rock tunes. The family members in my house are irritated but i dance to those tunes.

Don't let those people disturb you or your enjoyment of your preferred choice of music. When I was a kid I liked Heavy Metal (still do) and there was a HUGE campaign in America against it saying it was "Devil music" and would corrupt an entire generation. I'm 37 now and just fine. If YOU enjoy the music, it is nobody's business but your own, maybe just don't play it when those religious types are visiting. LOL

What they usually say is ROCK is the devils music, thanks to those conservative religious groups... But have they even listened to any good rock songs?

Religion is the root of so many of society's problems, in my opinion. There is no such thing as "devil's music", you are not going to go to hell based on what you listen to and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. If you want to express yourself through or by listening to a certain type of music.. as long as you aren't hurting anybody else, then you can listen to whatever the hell you want. There's obviously a generation gap between the music you're listening to and the people that are criticizing, I feel like that's true for a lot of forms of music that people listen to. ie. I love hip hop and my parents can't figure out why, it's the generation gap imo though.

I've heard some people say the very same thing or that they don't listen to the devils music. I guess it would be any type of secular music. So anything thats not gospel or christian would automatically be classified as the devil's music.

There's no such thing as the devil's music because music as an art will never go hand in hand with religion. Unless it's explicit catholic music, then there you have an exception.

NO, you SHOULD listen to music, it's good for you and the artist. Don't listen to people just because you may have respect for them, and just because they are older doesn't mean they are right. You are your own person, and you are a part of a different generation and culture. A person who tells you this is disrespectful and by what they say shows how close minded they are.

ROFL! To me, Rap-Music is a contradiction in terms. Seriously though, when I was growing up in the 80's, it was heavy metal, bands like WASP and Ozzy Ozzbourne were under attack from all ends, including congress. It camke and went like every other form of music. Listen to what you enjoy, music is art, expression and passion.

The lyrics i think would determine if its devil music. I listen to reggae. Not all but alot of the lyrics are spiritual. Im sure there are good and bad in all styles of music. Just dont listen to it in front of these people who say its devil music. Its like if eating with veggans and they are offended by you eating meat, dont eat it in front of them. So they same with the music. Dont play it in front of the people offended.

Hi dhart! As someone else said, I remember when the rock music I listened to in the 70's was called the devil's music, mostly by older people. I think it's mainly because sometimes they can't understand that music styles change quickly, and if it's a type of music they're not used to hearing they think it must be "bad." To me that just says they're not open to change. I do think there's more strong language in some newer music, and some people don't want to hear that anywhere. I myself don't really like rap, but I'm understanding of the fact that a lot of younger people do. Listen to what you like, and enjoy!

Music is the way to your soul, so what you put in is important. It's not the style of the music, it's the words. In addition, it's the INTENT of the words. So a beautiful thing like love and making love can be debased by the lyrics of a popular song. A catchy beat doesn't change the negative words. There's lots of music out there. I'd tell you to search for positive and uplifting lyrics and music rather than by into the mindless pap that the popular radio stations spew onto the airwaves. I know you can find music that you enjoy and that touches your soul in a positive way.
