When motivation deserts you

Hi everyone. Lately, I feel so sluggish and it is hard to work up the enthusiasm to do the things I need to get done. It is as though all motivation has deserted me...left me in the lurch, so to speak! Does this happen to you? When you lose your motivation, what do you do to get it back? Thank you for any responses. Karen

You beat me to it! I was wavering on starting a discussion the past few days over my lack of motivation! I am so bummed at how my writing score has dropped at helium in the past week due to my inactivity after my computer problems I just can't seem to get motivated to do any more articles. Of course the other demands of my busy life don't help a whole lot either. I have decided to scale everything back and start over. I need to get organized and create a good routine that will allow me to get everything done.

Well, I have no trouble motivating myself to crochet right now. I have a ton of hats in different sizes ready for the start of festival/holiday show season. I have been debating about adding one more show to my schedule and I have one more day to get my application in. I just don't want to get in over my head and then be scrambling to turn out more stuff. I still have to get stuff together with my students for a show of some sort at school.

I love to knit and crochet! And now with it colder out, it seems the perfect thing to do in my free time. I give away the things I make as birthday and Christmas gifts. What do you teach?

Ack! Don't you just hate when that happens?? Something breaks your stride, sets you back, and zap...motivation flies out the window. You may be onto something good, though, that I shall adopt. Sometimes, going back and starting fresh may be just what is needed to re-motivate us...especially when the odds of "catching up" seem bleak! Karen

Famous?? Nooo, but yes, I do write professionally...articles, poetry, and I have several blogs. The articles earn the most, though. I've always loved to write. I used to write short stories a lot, but it's been awhile :) Keep up the motivational self-talks. :) Hugs, Karen

I am having a problem with this, I am going to work on it by tapping. If you want to know what that is go to tapping.com and watch the free video. I know it works well for moods so I don't know why it shouldn't work for this.

It took me several days and I just followed along with the video, now I think I have it down pretty well. I've used it for different things and it seems to work best for me on moods. Thanks

Hi Pat. I watched the tapping video, but only once. You are right, though. Since mood and motivation are often closely connected, it should work on either. I need to watch if often enough to commit the various "places" to memory. Thank you for the suggestion. Karen

If it works well on moods and moods have a negative effect on pain or chronic illness, I imagine with time, you'll notice a positive effect there, too. I'm so glad you found and shared tapping. Karen

This is also happen to me, karen. What I did is that to relax and do some exercises to calm down my mind. I tried not to think heavy and or go outside and walk then back after. Go to the bath room to take shower to be fresh then do same as usual...That what I've done, karen... I hope this will give you an idea to motivate yourself in time you feel sluggish...Have a nice day! Take care

Perhaps, shower is also helpful because it sometimes our mind will stack of many different things and need to refresh it by water...Relaxation is much better ways to get rid of in the situation to return our dedication to do our works. I think we need someone also to inspired us...Did you agree with this, karen? Take care

Hello Aerous. Yes, my friend, I do agree. Anything good that relaxes the mind helps it be better able to accomplish our work. Also, you've made a good point about gaining inspiration from others. They can give us tips and ideas, motivate us by their own example, and offer much-appreciated and needed encouragement...just as you and others have right here. Regards, Karen

Hello my friend. It is always a comfort to know others struggle as I do. You're ideas are good ones, and I thank you for them. Most of them focus on getting up and away for bit to do something different or look at something rather than the work before us. And a shower can relax and revive at the same time, even if it is not our normal time to shower. I shall try as you've suggested! Regards to you, Karen

When my motivation just gets up and goes, I walk away from all my responsibilities. Sometimes for just a few hours, and sometimes for the whole day. I am very fortunate in life that I am able to do this. Give yourself a break from the humdrum, the mundane, the pressures and the stress. It works wonders for me. Hope you find your mojo!

Hi Malamar. This makes good sense. I feel so "driven" to work or earn sometimes that I just plain get too exhausted and numb to think of anything new or fresh. I love the idea of just walking away from it all for a while and rediscovering that mojo. Thank you for the tip. Karen

Yeah, I also get the same feeling sometimes. I advise you go out for doing some sports or you can read something about good life. Dale Carnegie's books are worth reading very much.

Hello Zhyair. I think lack of motivation is something we all suffer from time to time. I've heard of Dale Carnegie these many years. You're right. It's time I read what he has to say, since what I've heard is all good! And thank you, too, for the idea of exercising. I work at the computer so much that a change and some movement, I'm sure, would do me good. Thank you! Karen

hi peacefulwmn9 you sound a bit depressed. Maybe you'need to get more sleep and maybe get a checkup from your doctor just to be sure everything is still okay. Sometimes when I'hAve felt less than motivated I read about something inspiring and that sort of motivates me too. If you are feeling sluggish from lack of sleep you do need to get more rest. also it might not hurt to have your doctor check you for thyroid trouble. better safe than sorry.

Hi Hatley. These are all such good tips. I've been "sluggish" off and on since a major surgery last fall. Cannot seem to keep the momentum going, but I will surely try your advice. Thank you. Karen

this happened to me over a month ago. i was about to resign (with little hesitation) because of motivation. everyday it seemed like an eternity. waking up at night for work (yeah, night shift) and tell myself "it's gonna be okay, i can do this" but when i get to work, i whine and whine but i never let it out until one day i cried then my supervisor talked to me. that was when i decided to get a new job. but then they offered me a different task. this time, its a day job. weeeeee.. :B

after putting back my things in proper place after the flood was over, i lost the enthusiasm to be active. i felt that i need to rest my body and mind. cause of the stress i have been through that disaster. thankfully my place was not of those places that was hit hard by the storm that cause water to rise as high two storey house where people just stayed on top of their roof while being soaked up in the rain waiting for rescue. outside my home the water was as high as my shoulder. but since my home is quite elevated it is just knee high. but i still needed to put all things on top of table specially electronic items like this computer and tv and etc. now it is over i just try to take things slow and enjoy my life and appreciate the beautiful weather we have now but hopefully the other new storms they anticipate next week will not any more happen as i am tired of saving my things.

Oh, you poor thing! For all of last summer, my apartment flooded half-way to the knees time and time again! Thank goodness it hasn't been this way since, but oh, how awful that was! Some of my things, I've left permanently on "higher spaces," just in case. I love it here and absolutely loathe the idea of moving again, but I don't think I could stand another summer like last year's. I do feel for you! And yes, it is extremely exhausting "saving" one's things...and then all the clean up and major inconvenience of living in it all during the process. I sincerely pray you get no more such storms. Hey, Yea I really know what you mean, like I have also lost my motivation. I think I lost it about half way through high-school because ever since then, I haven't been motivated to even do my studies, and was left with a low mark. Make sure you have a good day, God bless and Happy Lotting!!

I am struggling with the same thing right now. Especially regarding my health issues. I feel like I have fought so hard to deal with them so long that I cannot put one foot in front of the other anymore. For me, I have to take time out to focus on my faith, and certain disciplines related to it (like reading and study, and just taking time alone away from the world with it) I often will get out my guitar and play music. Also taking one day at a time. I feel like I have insurmountable things at the moment, with homesickness (I don't live in my own country) marriage issues, debt, trying to lose weight and manage diabetes, and I look at the whole picture and despair. But I can do the next right thing this morning, and make it through one day, and eventually all those days will build up into a healthier, more free life, though it may take a while to see the change.

Hello Tea. Maybe it's the time of year?? It seems a number of us are wrestling with the same problem! I have chronic pain and health issues, too, so I think that plays a role, yes? I like your suggestions. Faith is truly a help, so I make every effort to stay in tune with that. I agree, changes take a while to show up in us in a positive way, so we must keep trying. Living in the present and taking that next "right" step makes perfect sense. So thank you for that! My best wishes to you in your efforts. Karen

Hi Leising, and welcome to MyLot! You make a good point. Maybe the best way to deal with lack of motivation or with exhaustion is just to let the mind empty itself out and "be blank" for a while. Thank you for your response, and have a good week for what remains of it. Karen

I find the weather motivates or de-motivates me, usually when it's hot and humid and I get lethargic and irritable and everything is too much hassle, I just want to lay down and get cool. I do find the Summer months in the UK the worst and affect me the most, I do believe I might have SAD during June, July and August. The cold makes me more alert, more active. Guess I am sensitive to the heat. I don't have any problem about motivating myself to go to the gym and I even went to the gym in the heat! Mind you the place was air conditioned! Depression is a big motivator killer. One day I am up the next I am down and it only takes a small thing to knock me down.

You know, Wolfie, you may have a good point here. For days now, it has been gray, rainy, chilly...dark! Since I also wrestle with depression, even with treatment, I can identify with what you're saying here. It does make one more easily effected by weather, temperatures, etc. And yes, on a down day, it can suck the life out of me! And then other days, I feel much better. Ups and downs. Ack! Thank you for your suggestions and examples. Karen

Hello Cher. I often have stretches, like you, where sleep seems hard to come by. And it is usually when it is the most needed! I think the mind gets so busy with itself that the body just won't relax. Hence, motivation is hard to maintain. I wish you well. Like you, I do tend to make up for lacks on my best days. Karen

Hi Peace. Your method also makes good sense, yes? When down, expose yourself to happy people, moods, and motivational reading. Sounds great, and I thank you for sharing that. Sometimes, it seems we know (or knew) what we should do, but it takes another to bring it back to our mind. Karen
