What are you having for dinner tonight?

Australia
November 7, 2009 11:21pm CST
It's just after 3pm here in sunny Queesnland in Australia & I have just put some of dinner in the oven...I am having a lamb roast for dinner & have just put the meat in the oven for a nice 5pm dinner. When I finish this post, I will need to do the veges...we are having roast pumpkin, kumara (weet potato) & carrot with gravy & mint sauce. I am getting hungry just thinking about it & I can already smell the garlic - with a lamb roast, I get a clove of garlic & cut it into a few pieces, make some cuts in the top of the roast & pop the garlic pieces in...YUMMO!! My question to you is...what are you going to have for dinner tonight?

I just used what I had in the fridge/ cupboard and ate pasta with a sauce made from Courgette, brocolli, dried chilli and single cream. Sounds bland but it was actually rather nice.

I love meals like that....can you please shoot your recipe over to me?

There wasn't really a recipe. I just threw the veg in a frying pan with some salt and pepper and stir fried them for about 5 mins then added about 200 ml single cream and some dried chilli. When the cream begins to 'boil' (don't know the proper term I'm afraid) you're ready to roll. I had it over some pasta with some parmesan cheese.

Well i had dinner about 4 hrs ago so let's see: I had sweet potato that I'd pan fried, some baked sole and stir fry broccoli with snap peas. The potato was cooked with very little oil (olive oil) as I prefer to eat healthy. Also I always eat some kind of veggie and usually fill my plate half full with just veggies, because I like to eat as much of them as possible. Ooh I absolutely love roast lambs, although have never tried it with a mint sauce, different? We usually eat it with tzatziki, that Greek yogurt sauce.

Yummo! I love heaps of veges too...I've never tried lamb with tzatziki...I'm not a big fan of mint sauce - hubby loves it though...it does have a nice tang to it & does bring out the flavor of the lamb.

Ah well you should try it sometime with the tzatziki sauce (if you're a garlic fan). I know we eat so much garlic that it comes out of our pours! lol

Hi moonchild, amazingly we don't get mushrooms in this area of Greece, only button ones imported. A while back I had some fantastic grilled mushrooms in a taverna and yesterday in town found portobello mushrooms in the supermarket for the first time ever. So I'll probably cook those in about another hour when it gets to 8pm, with tons of black pepper, garlic and olive oil, plus some herbs and pitta breads. It will be a rare treat. Your dinner sounds good but my favourite way with garlic is to roast it without peeling the cloves, next to the meat, and it comes out as a sweet garlic purree. Mint sauce, mmmm, I must be the only person in Greece who likes mint sauce with my lamb.

Your mushroom dish sounds really nice...The only person in Greece to like mint sauce with your lamb? May I ask what Greek people usually serve with lamb?

Of course you may. Greeks have oregano and lemon on lamb. They also have it on beef, pork, chicken and salad. They put oregano on almost everything. I don't actually like oregano, probably an overdose of the dreaded stuff, and prefer basil myself which the Greeks in this area don't eat.

We had dinner a couple of hours ago, and we had beef stew which I personally cooked. Actually, it was just a few ingredients which I just threw in the crockpot. The funny thing is I haven't cleared out the dishes yet. My younger son slept just before dinner, and I still have to wait until he wakes up, eats his dinner, before I could start cleaning up.

Thanks for the vote of confidence moonchild1au. But I really don't recommend it, and it is not really worth sharing recipes for. I think the only reason my kids like it is because they don't have any choice.

My son requested BBQ meatballs for dinner tonight. I am not sure what vegetables I am going to serve with it yet though. I will have to look and see what we have in the house before deciding. Your dinner sounds really good. I don't recall ever having mint sauce before.

Friday is usually pizza night here. But my daughter got a reward at school, and we did pizza for her treat earlier this week. SO I will probably go the chicken route. With some steamed veggies and cornbread, that ought to do it.

I guess it was fancy but even though there is a bit of a mess to clean up, I like roasts because you don't have to be in the kitchen the whole time it's cooking...hmmm chilli dogs...I wish I had some to make for lunch today

I have some leftover chicken salad, it's not enough to make a meal, so I'll throw it in a pan with diced bacon and hardboiled eggs and heat it up with some olive oil, so I'll make a warm salad that I'll probabily enjoy. Probabily.

Hi, your dinner sounds really good, especially the lamb roast. I'm feeling lazy today, so I just cook a simple vegetarian dish - carrots, green beans, mushrooms, beancurd and cabbage; boil all these in bean sauce, add some sesame oil. And dinner is ready!

Well, we're going to have a some salmon steaks. We just ordered them yesterday and they just arrived. It's been a while. We normally cook them with herbs and spices over a grill. Then, we have some greens with mashed potatoes on the side. Sometimes, we have it with rice. I don't know what the side dish will be but I know we'll have salmon for the main.
