My son who is 13 years old has started doing a paper round to earn himself a bit of pocket money, the more leaflets that they have to put in the papers the more money they earn.I think this is a great way for a child to earn their own money themselves as that way they know that they have to work to get paid. What do you think? As well as they get extra exercise,so that is a bonus dont you think.

i think its great that your boy has started to work for his spending cash! When I was 12 or 13, my mom and step dad had a friend that had a bicycle repair shop that he ran as a side job - and he needed help getting the word out. He printed out a crap load of flyers and I got $0.05 for each flyer I put out - I bet you I handed out a thousand flyers or better! But I loved it! I think he'll find it very rewarding... and at 13, when someone hands you a cash or check for a job well done, you feel 100% better about yourself too!

It is almost like a rite of passage, being able to earn money. It says you are growing up.

I think it is fabulous. Kids do need to have responsibilities. I know my child thinks I am a cash cow lately. She is a great kid, don't get me wrong, but. To have your son earning his own spend money is great, it helps teach the value of a dollar at a young age and also the responsibility of finding a friend to cover when he is on vacation, sick, ect.... Great tool to instill work ethics and values. Kudos to you.

I think it's a great idea! Especially if they make the customers pay the newspaper directly instead of him then he wouldn't have to worry about people that don't pay ect though he'd learn money management too. We don't have that in our area anymore. They went to a morning only newspaper when I was a tween and only want people that can drive & you have to be available like @ 3am or something. Dirty shame though... it's hard to get a first job of any kind as it is when you are young & inexperienced.

Its a great job for kids to do. I was a papergirl when I was a young teenager. It makes you reliable, teaches you responsiblities and gives you self esteem. Its a great thing for any kid wanting to make money. I loved the job and the best part was being able to buy gifts for everyone for Christmas.

I think that it also shows them they have to earn money rather than expect it for nothing all the time as well as when they go and spend their money they also learn that it do not take long to spend it.I think that there are alot of paper rouds about that children can do,but they have to be a certain age before they do it where we live.My son also got all his christmas presents with the money he had earnt.

hi,jugsjugs! it's wonderful! Doing paper round is a meaningful experience for kids.they can learn how to deal with prolems ,how to contact with defferent people, and earn porket money by themselves.I believe they will be so proud of it and understand the value of labor. in all, this part-time job is good for your son in many aspects. hope your son enjoy it! have a nice day!

My kids did the paper route and so have some of my grandkids. It is a great way for them to not only earn money but to learn work responsibility. They learn how to be on time. They also learn how to handle money if they have to collect for the papers. It is one of the jobs that kids can do before they get to be 16 and get the idea that they don't really want to work. It also give them a good self esteem. It makes them a little bit independent.

I think it is a terrific idea. Good for him. I never see kids around here mowing lawns anymore. My brother did that. It should be a good experience.

Wouldn't that be nice! Heaven forbid my granddaughter should get up(usually going to bed) at that early an hour to deliver newspapers. I think it is a marvelous idea and good for him! So anitiative and responsibility. I would be very proud of a child that wanted to do such a thing! And any exercise is a good thing!

It is axiomatic that children earning at this tender age would be wise on money making in the nearest future.

I think giving children small tasks that will help them earn money is a great way to start teaching them the value of money. This will help them understand why adults need to make money. This also gives children the sense of responsibility on how they should spend it and on what. This will also give them the chance to think about their future. Incidentally, I have a lens/blog about a book of Robert T. Kiyosaki, Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens - which is an excellent read for every teenager or parent who want his/her children to succeed financially. You can check it out at http://www.squidoo.com/rich-dad-poor-dad-for-teens. What you will find there is just a sneak preview of what's inside the book. You might want to have a copy of the book itself and read it with your son. I bought a copy to give it to my teenage nephew.

I think it is great thathe can get out and earn some money for himself also. I wish it was as safe for other children to do it like it was years ago though. I hope he will be safe while he is out there. Do you go with him? Just wandering.

I am proud your son started doing work and earning money. This will make him feel confident. He can understand the value of money. He will learn responsibility. He will get self satisfaction by doing some work properly. If he becomes a boss in future, he will understand the feeling of a worker very well.

I have wanted to do those paper routes like the ones seen in movies. I know the children doing that are getting paid. Unfortunately, we dont have that kind of service here. I also love to ride bikes and Id get to read the papers that I would be delivering for free. That's kinda like 3 things that I like rolled into one thing.LOL Its always good to learn the value of earning a living early on. That gives the child some sense of responsibility about real life in general when they would be on their own. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that exercise thing. Im not really a fan of exercising but having to ride a back for your job and for fun, that's like the best form of exercise that could ever exist.^_^ Your son is being a responsible one in taking on that job. He's also helping you out in a way when it comes to finances because he wouldnt have to ask from you for an allowance since he is earning his own extra spending money.

Hi JJ, This is a good exposure of kids to the value of earning money that it's not easy, you have to invest effort and patience to earn money. I find this cute for kids to make for a little "earning". they can save their earnings or have a seed money to start with in saving for something they want to buy or as an additional reward we parents can add some to it so they can get their reward.

Yes, I think a paper round is great, both my brother and I had one when we were younger. Its a good little first job for a kid, gets them some pocket money and some idea of a little responsibility of having a job commitment.

My kids too, i encourage them to make things and sell them, this is their early stages of business, they are also paid by my grandmother to do household chores during saturdays, during farm harvest i give them a boxes and kilos of fruits and vegetables w/c they sell on our neighbors and relatives. A lot of times they get orders for different commodities as well. My wife is mad about this she says i should not allow my kids to work coz they might interfere with school, but the kids love it, not only do they make money but they are popular in our place, and they are known to be hardworking kids, of course people know we are not that poor to make my kids work, that is not the reason. Everytime they got home from selling we make a recap of what has happened, and from that we were able to sum things up and evaluate what it really takes to be a good businessman/manager/seller. Lessons in life, they somehow were able to know some of the things by experiencing them earlier in life.
