What are your views on the Homeless?

I live in an area where there are homeless people around every corner. They will sit outside of the gas stations and stores. Some will ask for money, some will just want to talk, some are quiet and keep to themselves.. I have become good associates with some of them and help them out with food when they need it [I work at a restaurant]. I do have a problem with some of them. For instance, there was a time when a homeless man asked me for a quarter. I just got paid so I thought, ok. I gave it to him, then he asked me for a dollar. I told him I did not have it, I only had bigger bills. After that he said "well then at least give me a cigarette or something!" [brings up the book, when you give a mouse a cookie]... anyways, my question is, what are your views on the homeless? Are they a public nuisance to you or do you just not really care? I would like to see how people from different areas react.

I haven't had that much interaction with the homeless in my hometown because we have very few (I live in a fairly small town). However, I have traveled quite a bit and have encountered them in different cities around the country. I wouldn't say that most of them are a public nuisance, although I have encountered some that just look for trouble. I recently traveled to Washington, DC and was walking back to the Metro around 10pm one night and this homeless guy was walking behind some tourists yelling and cussing at them for some reason but he actually scared me, so we hurried past him and headed to the Metro station. I have encountered a lot of people during the couple of times that I have visited Miami and I have helped several of them out. I would give them some money even though it wasn't much (I don't usually carry a lot of cash). I feel sorry for them because the majority of them can't really help their situations. I want to help them out every chance I get. But for the grace of God, I could be in that same situation.

I completely understand. I see them and everytime I think, what if that was me? How would I feel if someone was treating me like the scum of the Earth when I was already so low. Florida [where I live] IS a crazy place to live and I am not surprised it is here that you had your scary encounter. Not all of us floridians are crazy [just most] :) Thanks for the response.

I think that is why I drive insane is because you HAVE to to be able to drive daily with these whack-o's [haha] I must have misread your response. I thought it said Miami is where you had the "incident". I am glad you overall like Florida as it is a wonderful place [when you look past all the negatives] and it is where I call home. :)

Actually it was DC that the scary encounter with the homeless guy happened. The ones in Florida were pretty harmless...at least the ones that I encountered. And I wouldn't say that most people in Florida are crazy, but a lot of them do drive like maniacs around Fort Lauderdale and Miami! haha But I do still love it in Florida. I usually go down there at least once a year if possible.

Of course I do sympathize to the less fortunate. People react differently depending on ones culture and level of desperation. Many beg and many more steal.

i feel for the ones who cant help but to be homeless. but there are some who have a choice to be or not to be. its sad we can tell between the two. but when they ask me for money i will tell them i dont have any myself. but i have seen where one dude asked this lady for a dollar and she said sorry all i have is a ten and he told her i can change it for you. she got mad at him. ive been to washington dc and they ask me if they can take a drag off my cig, and then hand it back, i am like dude keep it. but sometime they can be a pain in the rear. one guy asked for a dollar and i was dress up and looked at him, ok dude for real i am dress up and you are dress better then me so how about you give me a dollar. but yeah i feel for some and others i dont

I know homeless are many in some areas but they for the most part have not choose to be homeless just have has some issues come up they can not help. I have been where they have been almost and it is not fun thing. After all money makes things and when you get laid off and can not find a job money runs out and getting help is not always as easy as it sounds or fun to try. After a while of getting doors slammed in your face or no after no it gets you down with not much signs of getting anything down and become homeless. I myself will help anyone whether I have it or not it always comes back to me many times over. Pay It forward kind of thing really. Try it as you have said you have helped. What happened after you helped in your life? Think and see if things did not come back to you many times over after helping people. Many more should help people and not think of all homeless as bums and wino's.

I fully believe in paying it forward. I feel like someone somewhere has seen my good deeds and that have not gone unnoticed [I am not saying I do these things to be rewarded, but I would look like to know these things have been acknowledged at least]

Hi chelsgrrl: First of all i think you must have a good heart to help homeless. Now, i don't like to give them money because i always think about what they really do with the money, i prefer to buy people food if they ask me to help them and even with that i prefer to help a fundation because in my opinion, to give money or food to a homeless don't help to work against the big problem that it's poverty. Thanks for starting this discussion. Have a nice day. -Alvaro

wow.. that is an incredible story! I thank you so much for sharing. And I dont think we realize how many stories like this happen each and every day all over the world. It is by the grace of God that me and my family are not homeless. I count my blessings everyday.

I don't want to be mean or anything, but I don't care about the hobos. As long as they don't bother me, I'm fine with them living on the corner. It's not my life, and they made the decisions to get to the place they are. I'm not rude to them, though. I try to give them money when I can spare.

Thats a good way to look at it, where you dont mind either way. It makes it easier when you dont have too strong of an opinion on the subject. I try to spare change often as well..

I used to live on the streets and I have found that most homeless are that way because they want to live that way, to have absolutely no responsibilities. Their are sometimes a few rare gems that just had some hard times that where just too much to handle but these are few and far between. Think of it this way if you where laid off tomorrow and had no money so you get evicted from your apartment. Don't you think your friends would let you stay with them for a while as long as while you where there you where progressively trying to better your situation. I know most of us would have no problem letting a friend like that stay with you. We have all had those friends who need a place to crash "until I can get on my feet again" then they spend all day sleeping playing video games online and don't pay any bills those are the people who are choosing to be bums and will eventually end up on the street. I'm not saying these people are not nice they just want to be a bum and if that's what they want fine, but I'm not going to reward their behavior by giving them my change. I need my change for coffee in the morning. I live in a neighborhood with lots of homelessness and I cant tell you how many times a day I get hassled for money if I gave each just a quarter it would easily be $2-3 every day At least $10 a week for sure.

Yes the homeless are a problem! Some won't work and some can't work, most are ignorant, some are scammers and crooks. I hesitate to give them money because that's not really helping. Give a man a fish and feed him for a day- teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Never give money to kids, because they won't go school when they are begging. Most beggars are not what they seem. Yes they are a nuisance that won't go away as long as they can make a living at begging! (Great Post!)

Thanks for the response barehugs. I never really thought about the children that are out on the streets. As a matter of fact, there are two boys that come to my job all the time to get food and drinks after we close. I feel so sorry for them and always want to ask them why they are in that situation and to let them know there are tons of resources out there to help children, more so than adults.

When I lived in New York yes I would see them alot and it would bother me that New York had homeless people walking or laying around. I wish I was rich because I would have loved to have a building that was not like a shelter where thoses are not safe, but a place that was like a hotel and just help them get back on their feet. Here living in New Mexico I really haven't seen any homeless around. It bothers me that people anywhere would be homeless, with no food. How about the people who have lost their homes and living in tents right here in the US. Its a horrible situation all around.

Yes, I have heard about the "tent citites" I fell like why make them leave? They are just going to be walking the streets and sleeping in public, why not allow a designated space for the temporarily as long as they are not hurting anyone. Usually in the more rural areas, there are not many who are homeless. It seems to be much more in the urban areas where there is access to many more things. I wish there was something that could be done about this unfortunate situation.

Hello chelsgrrl69 this is checkmail and often do see a lot of homeless peoples around mine area.Think there would be atleast 5-10% homeless peoples in all in our area.Feel really sad for them, and also help some if possible, mostly in good deed. But there are some homeless peoples who don't dwell properly, and make an mess.Thats an terrible site to watch when there is argument in their peoples, its worst. But still they are after all peoples, even we do have arguments often.Yeah if they are dirty they are public nuisance but if are willing to do hard work than they are good assets. It mostly depends upon the nature of the person.

It is really difficult being homeless and for some of them, there are several reason why they are homeless and especially in difficult economic situations. I have not had any contact with any of them maybe because I am home most of the time, but I feel sorry for them and don't forget that I could be that person but for Gods grace so when I have the opportunity to give to them I do.

My thought is that if they don't bother me then I won't bother them. What I am trying to say here is that for the most part I don't have a problem with homeless people. There are actually some that live at the end of our road down by the railroad tracks and I've never seen them but I know that they live there because I can hear them sometimes at night and then our neighbors have also told us that they live down there. They never bother us or ask us for anything, but it doesn't bother me too much overall.

Hi chelsgrrl69. How are you.? This phenomena and disparity in the human beings do exist every where in the world. It is really pity. We are all God's creature; but why these disparities; some people are living in palaces, bungalows, modern houses etc etc and some of the people are even homeless sleeping, eating and doing every thing in the streets. Why can't people share every thing available in the world; after all we are all one creature. Will this world change; will every one live with equal possessions. I think we should dream for such a world. Some drastic revolution should take place among us world wide to see that state. Otherwise the world will ever remain like this only. Thanks for the opportunity to share my views. WITH BEST WISHES AND BEST OF LUCK.

Hello manofstrongmind. I am great. You make a great point about everyone in the world sharing in a perfect world. If only we could be so fortunate to live in that kind of situation and live in harmony [even though we are so far from harmony now as it is] I wish there was more of a bond between mankind and all of us. But the truth is, there just isn't, so we just have to take it as it is and do everything right by each other. [treat others as you would want to be treated]

Where I'm from the homeless aren't really a problem. Sure there are a few that hang out around places like Pizza Hut. I hate when they beg for stuff though. If they are that good at begging, then why on earth would they allow themselves to get into that type of situation? Its one thing to be homeless not by choice, but it's another when the sisuation could have been avoided.

Basically scavengers. Sometimes, when I do not have extra money to spare or am not in the mood to deal with them, when they ask me for some spare change, I tell them that I used my card and I do not have cash. It works like a charm. I cannot fathom why a person would choose that lifestyle. But, it is their choice. And I feel very sorry for anyone who is homeless against their will.

I don't group all homeless people together any more than I group all females together, all males together, all straights/gays/lesbians etc together. Not all of them are the same. Like anyone that I bump into on the street, if I get a certain vibe from them, then I become a little nervous but I think that's just me being a girl and trying to keep myself safe. When I can, I love to go into a McDonalds or nearby store and buy them something. Maybe a sandwich, or something to drink. I'm sure there are some of them that don't work, don't try and don't deserve any of our pity, but then there are the other ones that I'm sure just have been through some tough times and really could use some support. I feel really bad for someone who doesn't have someone to stay. I think it's weird that a lot of people only seem to care about the homeless people (not saying you :p) once a year and that's usually Christmas time. Has anyone else noticed that?
• United States
13 Dec 09
Hello friend. I see your point about once a year. Only notice the problem during the holidays. [but then again, you are so excited with the holidays, it makes you feel that much worse for them]. It is a good thing in general to not group people together because not all people are the same. And, there ARE different cases and situations.

Most of the homeless people around here don't talk too much. Most of them are actually mentally unstable and it kind of scares me a bit so I avoid getting close. But I guess I don't really have any views on them. One asked me once if I had money, so I offered to buy him a coffee because he was sitting outside my old work as I was leaving (And I worked in a coffee shop) and he said no he wanted money.. Sorry but if you want a coffee or something to eat I can buy the food or coffee for you.. But a lot of the homeless people I've seen that ask for money are usually drunk or stoned.

My city of Adelaide do not have many homeless people. At one stage, a group of homeless had set up tents for living in the public gardens and lawns. The council made a point of rehousing them, by finding units or homeless shelters for them.. However, there are homeless here that are not visible. Threy live in cars, sometimes whole families. We dont see them, because they dont want people to know they are homeless. They perobably get food from the charities. It is a disgrace that a country like Australia would have homeless people. Begging is against the law here. Like you, I wouldn't mind giving a small amount of money here and there, but I would be concerned about about harrassing people to ask for more money.

It is sad to see the people those who are homeless. In India there are many people they are homeless. Some of them sleeping in Bus Stands, Railway Stations , in front of the shopes. I have seen people staying in the slums. They have a home there, but the condition is very ugly. I think the homeless are everywhere in the world. But the number of them will be more in under developed and developing countries when compared to the developed countries. I dont think that they are a nuisance. But the poverty will lead them to do crimes to get one time food. I have sympathy towards them but I am not in a position to help them. In my opinion, the government can do a lot to rehabilate them. But most of the governmens will do nothing.

Homeless is a very sad thing.Home is something where we can get shelter. And least rest for a while from our daily routine busy schedules. Many are on the foot paths .Children, womenm, men with different age groups.Every one need a home .we have many orpahnages and homes for people. So by helping them reach such charitable organisations can be better than we giving money and food.Because the Homes are made especially for such people. We can fund the organisation.Taking something or handling it personally may cause some risks.
