Think you can beat nature if you live in a farm? Take care of the vegetable garden? You can take care of chickens and other animals? You manage with ordinary people in the country? Can you do without the facilities of the city with which you are accustomed? You can sleep at nine pm and wake up at four in the morning? Think you can be happy in the country? The good and bad, may often difficult, but brilliant?

Forced to live on a farm? I'd give just about anything to do that! And, yes, I can take care of chickens and animals, raise a garden, chop wood, build a fire, haul water... it's a lot better life than sitting in the city, eating junk food and getting fat.

But animals are the big noise of morning, when they're hungry, exactly in the five in the morning ; this can be a big problem

I live a nomadic life...sometimes in my country house and sometimes in my town house. But my country house is upgraded with modern facilites including internet I don't feel any difference with my town house except probably I don't see tall buildings and less things available for sale in the shops. I can mingle well with the ordinary people and I am accepted well by them. They are simple folks with simple minds which I find more comfort in their presence compared to town people who are more snobbish.

Hi, we say here that a person can change a place, and this is very true, because if somebody want really can have here all what need, facility for living; if i close my home door i am like in a city flat.....but when i open my door, i am in a big garden; so, is great. About simple people, you are so right, this is a big true, i adore this simple who don t know who Freud was, but know to share with me all what they know or have;

been there done that. i live on a farm, i milk cows for a living. i get up round 4.40am and am home by 7.30 am. then when i go round to my mums, we've got dogs, sheep chooks and turkeys. i look after the horses, and ride them. it's nothing to me, our animals don't make lots of noise unless there is a problem like a fox around the place. the only one who make a fuss over food time will be one of the horses. i'd rather the country to the city any day.

one of my fav things is getting to watch the sun in the morning. i get fresh milk from the dairy a few times a week, save a lot of money that way. my son bought in a heap of eggs at mums this morning he loves getting them. then i was laughing at te baby turkey's, all running round after little things. then couldn't find a tennis ball, and we think dads dog pinched it instead of the puppy.

I think I could live on a farm because right now I live in the country and that is kind of a similar experience.Granted I would rather certain things were in place like electricity and water but I think I could survive because I used to stay with my grandmother and that was the state of affairs ,we didnt have any electricity and we would get water from a nearby standpipe

I'd love to. Actually, I want to have a barn someday. I love nature and I love animals. I know it's gonna be hard work, but since that's what I love, it's gonna be easier. If you'd ask me which I would choose between city life and farm life, I'd say farm life. Life in a farm is definitely simpler and happier.

I would not be able to survive on a farm. I like being in the middle of the city, where everything I could possibly need is available to me. If I need to do something I can do it. If I need to go somewhere, there is a bus stop right outside of my apartment. Everything that I need is here. I would not like living in the country.

Hey ice...I would just LOVE to live on a farm..out in the boonies where the nearest neighbor is over a mile away. Live off the land, solar panels for electric, grow/hunt all our food. We do grow/can about 50% of our food intake as it is now. I get my brown organic eggs from my neighbor. I'm hoping to be able to get my own chickens come spring time. I'm a country girl in heart, spirit, soul. I tried city livin' for a few years. I couldn't stand it so moved back 'home'. It's not an easy life but it's a very wholesome life!!!!

I agree with you. I think living on a farm can be good but it can also be heart breaking. My uncle lost his farm because he could never clear the debt he went into to buy it. In the end he divided the land and sold it off to clear his debt. That was so sad. I am a city girl who has moved to the country because I prefer it out here. So peaceful and lots of fresh air. We are not on a farm but we have some land and try and grow our own food, plus we do keep chickens. I love fresh eggs from free range chickens. We have not had much success with the food growing as the soil is not good and we are in drought. We are also old and sick but we keep trying. I would not go back to the city.

Hi teacher, you know how much healthier is country life? How many benefitts you can have? If somebody, few years ago ask me if i can live here; my answer can be for sure; NEVER. seems that don t exist never, is just our capacity to understand things in life; you know that before to move here i don t see how a cow give us milk? just in pictures or maybe to Discovery. Now i go to my friends who have big farms and i am really shocked when i see that all come here from city, to start a new life.

Hi, icesmile. I don't think that I could live on a farm. This takes pride, speed and dedication. It also takes an honesty commitment too. Which I have in me, but not just for a farm. I don't think that I could designate the time to look after an farm. This would take time and I would have to know what I am doing when I get out on the farm. I may not be able to handle it at first, but I know that eventually I will get the hang of it. I just prefer to live in the city instead.

hi ice, we used to have a farm before where we sometimes stay 5 days in a row but i was still young then. i used to feed chickens and ducks and gather eggs in the mornings while my siblings do the same in the afternoons. we have a little piggery, and several cows. we have patches of vegetables, fruit trees, that we harvest every now and then to sell to the market. i remember there was a few hectares of coffee and corn which we harvest too. we use firewood in cooking and we dont have electricity there. drinking water is taken from the spring and we do our laundry in the river. but due to the fightings and sudden clashes of rebels and army, my father decided to sell the same and to stay permanently in the city. now that this discussion is at hand, i miss the old ways. yes, i can live in a farm. ann

She die 2 months ago, and of course that i will live here for ever, just because i like this kind of life, i find my peace here; is hard, but is great

I had the chance to do just that. I grew up near New York City so I think of myself very much as a city type person. When I was in college, one of my dearest friends was from a cattle ranch in Montana, USA. I went on Spring Break with her to visit the farm and take part in helping out. And I was amazed at the wonderfulness of how peaceful it was. I didn't mind getting up at 4am to start breakfast for the ranch hands and family. I learned how to cook for 18 hungry men and 4 women. After 3 days there I took over doing breakfast by myself so her mom could get an extra hour of sleep as she was pregnant at the time and needed the extra rest. It was a pleasure to cook for all of them and see how much food they could all eat!! And I took over the chickens that were for the house eggs, fed them, cleaned up after them and collected the eggs. Learned how not to get pecked too often and even named a few. I got to learn how to milk a cow by hand and brand a calf. It was a very physically demanding job but very peaceful and satifying. They had over 2000 head of cattle so everyone was busy all the time doing something to keep things going. There are no real weekends on a farm and that was okay for me. We had TV by satellite and lots of movies when it went out. No pc access and phone was spotty but they had a cb and radio for emergencies. They nicknamed me CG for City Girl and after a few days I answered to it. I was there for almost 2 weeks and it was an amazing experience. I don't think I'd want to do it full time but it was so peaceful I can see why so many do! They may have teased me but I cut all my long fingernails off before I got there and bought a good solid pair of boots so I was ready, willing and able to work. Before that my nails were very long and always painted Red. We owe so much to the hard working farmers every day I appreciate the vegetables in a different way cause I know first hand how it comes to pass that they are at the market to be sold. I helped pick and maintain the vegetable garden they had there and it was so much better than anything I'd had from a grocery store. I have a deep feeling of pride in what farmers do and a respect for all their efforts. What about you? Are you part of the farmers of the world?

I loved the sense of community and kindness of the ranchers and farmers that I met. They had a more direct simple life and were more honest than any other kind of people I have met. You have made me remember a very special time in my life and just how much I miss that sense of peace and belonging to the earth. It's a very physical job but that's part of what makes it special if you know what I mean. There is a sense of real accomplishment.

Hi icesmile! I can handle living in a farm. I have been spending some of my summer vacations in the province and the house of my maternal grandparents is found in the middle of the farm which is walking distance to the beach. It is really not that noisy if you do not live by the barn. From time to time, I spend my weekends in my uncle's house which is also in a farm. I think it's great to have a TV (cable), internet access, and cellphone signal from there. That means I can still enjoy the facilities of the city!

Yes of course before we lived in the city we were one living in the province where farm is the way of life there. At young age we got to learn how to fish in the sea and plant crops in the mountains or in our backyard. We never had any appliances which is prevalent in every houses in the city. We don't want any electronics gadgets at all. We simply live a meaningful lives and a peaceful ones. We also have chickens and pigs and goats as well. they are the animals that we consider companions as well. they give us fun and amusements and also foods as well. Everyday is a simple day.

I would like to have a house that was out in the country on a little bit larger parcel of land, but I don't think that I truly would enjoy living on a farm. I'd like to have the space to have a large vegetable garden but I do not want to deal with having any live animals. I would like to be a little further from some of the hustle and bustle of living in the city, but I still want to be close enough that I can get there in a short period of time if there is something that I need. So, no, I don't think that I could live on a farm.

Hi. It is, in fact, my dream to live in the country and off the land. I already live in a small town of 5,000 so I'm used to everybody knowing me. Once I graduate college, I'm going to get married to my boyfriend and we'll live in the middle of no where. His hometown has a population of 80. I'm not scared. I anticipate living in a valley surrounded by woods and acres of wheat fields. It's clear skies where I can see the stars. I've lived in the big city... it's overrated. :) At least in the country you have well water and not the recycled water that's in urban areas. :) The dream is, indeed, brilliant. We're going to have a greenhouse, so we can grow our vegetables year round. Thanks to modern technology, I can work from home out there... I'm so lookin forward to it.

As long as I have a moderately fast internet access, then I think I could do without any city facilities. I would only be able to wake up at 4 AM if I got 8 to 9 hours of sleep; going to bed at 9 PM is only 7 hours. I don't know if I could handle farm work either.

About 10 years ago I bought a farm and moved there. Prior to that, I had never lived on a farm. I loved living on a farm. I adjusted to it really well. I loved living in tune with nature. I found that my internal clock adjusted to rising with the sun, but I stayed up rather late, well after the sun set. There were so many fun things to do, and I really enjoyed the solitude and the quiet, as well as watching the many different animals, both domestic and wild. I especially enjoyed having different animals, especially dogs. I just love dogs and I had many dogs. By the way, how is your dog?
