Just a Minute

When I am having "E" discussions on Skype for example, people, including me, often say "Just a Minute" or "BRB (Be Right Back))" because they need to do something. But have you ever noticed just how long a "minute" can be? How long is a minute?

How about how long a sec (as in "just a sec") is?

Depends whether we´re talking a ´just popping to the loo´ minute, or a ´sticking on a cup of tea´ minute.

Or ringing a friend. Popping down to the shops. Mowing the lawn or going out for supper! LOL.

Hi there! Lol! Interesting point made. A minute could extend from 60 to 600 seconds for some people. I think they just give you a hint, who say - 'Just a minute', that they are likely to rejoin you soon. They may take a minute or many minutes to resurface, you need to be patient with them.........lol!

I usually say BRB and tell them what I am going to do because I know from experience a minute is never enough time to do anything. I have to pause talking on the computer to let the dog in and out, help my avatar to the potty, grab something to eat, etc... and all of those activities take more than a minute. And from working in customer service I can tell you that a MOMENT is defined as 9 seconds in industry standards. So a minute must be 60 second. :-)

A minute is however long it takes you to visit the bathroom, turn on the fan because you're having a hot flash or you're hot and bothered, however long it takes for you to answer the phone or door or go make a peanut butter and lettuce sandwich. I used to say brb and watch to see what other people were talking about. Silly, I know, but it gave me the feelings of eavesdropping even though I could have scrolled back had I actually been gone for a minute.

LOL. I'm usually in one to ones so there's not a lot of point in scrolling back. I agree with you. A "minute" is however long it takes to do what you have to.

If you are talking about my best friend, one minute takes an about 15 to 20 minutes. BRB is even worst, because RB can take one hour or longer...

When referring to my favorite chat buddy, 'BRB' usually means I need to go to the loo..... I'm sure you understand that I just as soon not pay attention to how long it has taken because, well, I just rather not know. I just scatter off to do something myself and think lovely thoughts.

I used to talk to someone that would say brb on IM all of the time and they would come back on the next day and I would tell them that they could have just said bye and left it at that, I did understand that there were other things to do in life but it seemed even if I put brb, that I had to take the dogs out or use the bathroom myself, they would type something and want me to wait....I got tired of it and quit chatting with them. It's just inconsideration on their part.5 or 10 minutes is one thing but two hours or the next day is another and I let someone know that they were being inconsiderate.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

But the person on the other end has no idea how long they might have to wait.

Yeah, now that you've asked, without noticing it, we have been taking longer than a minute when we say "just a minute". Even when we say brb, it takes about a few minutes more and to think that we only ask for 60 seconds. My, you got me thinking now, i was chatting with my partner last night then he said brb, and it took him almost more than 15 minutes to get back on line which i didn't notice because i do that also. THen we should not say "just a minute" or "brb" at all, when we can't be back within 60 seconds.....funny but it's true.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I don't say how long it is? But as far as I know a minute is a minute that is 60 second..lol. Since they say that. It is now practice that a minute is longer than an hour or maybe about two hour. I don't know why but I'm sure this is now a habit of every body that is on the net...
@p1kef1sh (45681)

A minute is definitely longer than 60 seconds. Illogical though that sounds!

Hiya p1kef1sh, Yes you´re right I´ll be right back and they are gone for two whole hours so that was the finish of my chatting on the Messenger as I had not got all day to be on there. But it was fun while it lasted every now and then I will get on the Messenger just for a little while. You can get really carried away with that.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I can go on all day with Messenger. Then "BRB" and that's the end of that! LOL.

Hiya p1ke..well as you know with me it does tend to vary from time to time! But I do with other people too so it could be to get a drink that takes 3mins for the kettle to boil, go to the ladies room which is about t he same time and if you do that all in the same time it could be anything between 6-10 mins-the only thing here I cannot do is put my minute into seconds! lol..LoLo

If I say "just a minute" I usually do mean I will be back in, maximum three minutes. I also say be right back for this same amount of time. If I say AFK "Away from Keyboard" it usually means I'll be away for a long time but would like to leave my conversation windows open incase someone needs to say something.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
31 Jan 10
I've never heard of AFK - but it sounds a useful one for when I am away, but not mid-conversation.

I never tell someone just a minute because I have so many people in my life that go down to the technical aspects of things. However, I do use the term be right back. When I say that I am usually referring to the fact that I need to run to the bathroom or that I need to run and get myself something to drink. It typically takes me less than three minutes before I return to whatever it is that I was previously doing.

Right now I have a friend on Skype who has fallen asleep on me! She didn't even say BRB! LOL.

It is only too real to be true that a minute is literally a minute when people need a break from what ever they are doing online. You can think of it as something near a minute, which may exceed or which may be shorter than a minute.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
11 Feb 10
Indeed. That's very true. Thank you.

We say 'just a mo' or 'half a mo' while I ... and then a 'mo' or 'moment' can be any length of time. Also sometimes ,'back in a tick' which of course is a blatant lie because a tick is only a second if you take it literally LOL
@p1kef1sh (45681)
10 Feb 10
Very true. The truth of course is that we are going and we may be some time. Perhaps 'Back in a cup of tea" might be more accurate!
