Safety first... - a balcony without railings!

health and safety - a balcony without railings

I was walking with my dog about half an hour ago when I noticed that one of my neighbour's balcony is still without railings after two years of moving into the house. I am not the one who likes to gossip about his neighbour, but I take health and safety issues at heart. I know that this particular couple have no kids at the moment, so there is no danger that a toddler might fall from their balcony but even adults can fall. I wonder why they did not put a temporary railings even if it s a wooden one for the time being. Would live in a house with a balcony without railings?

well, it is really dangerous living in a house/apartment with balcony, without railings, but maybe your neighbors actually don't use it, if they don'thave any or they just don't think it is dangerous at all If I have or buy a house with such balcony, i will immediately put railings on it, especially if I have children, because for them it is really dangerous- when they play, they don't care if there are railings or not!

I know what you mean if the kids see something out the window open the door after it off the balcony they go. I cant think about that, wow that is super dangerous thank god they don't have kids. But I still believe they need a railing.

yeam, I also think they need some railings for the balcony, because with or without kids, it is still dangerous and for the adults too!

It is really very dangerous. Well they dont have kids, but what if some guest went to their home. Accidents never knock. Please ask them to put railing their.

Very true! What if is always something to remember. What if a friend came over had their kid or even was watching a kid and all of a sudden out the door they go quick like kids do you cant catch them. They are fast. Oh I would ask them to put up a railing just in case something happens.

This Makes Me wonder who would buy a House that hadn't been finished in this way!

Hi ronaldinu, To me that is for asking for accident waiting to happen, no I could never live in a house without railings on a balcony, I think its rather stupid. Tamara

My thoughts exactly: an accident waiting to happen. At least in the photo they have the sliding doors closed up. They should make sure it is locked to avoid anyone opening it and stepping out. Even if one was aware that there were no railings, it still doesn't discount the possibility of accidents having. There have already been accidents with balconies that have railings, what more those without right?

It does need to be fixed. My back porch doesn't have a railing and it is going to be a focus this summer. It can be very dangerous not to have railings.

I won't definitely live in a house without railings on a balcony. although you're very careful not to fall from those, accidents happen and you can't predict them. have you tried talking about that to your neighbor? it's kind of very alarming and should be taken care of. hmm.. maybe their door to the balcony is locked up so no one can get out? what if there's fire.. balconies are good exits are they? i wish the owner of the balcony would do something about it.

Isn't this interesting? If this neighbour is renting then for sure this is a major hazard weighing on the owner of the building. If I were the owner of a rented unit that had a balcony with no railings, I would never of rented it until I installed a secure railing. If the neighbours bought the place, it is up to them whether or not they want to get to the balcony to fix it up, with railings. What I mean to say is that we had a cabin with an upstairs balcony but that wasn't being used for the reason that it wasn't finished. Since adults only live in the subject of you post, then perhaps it is something that is not on their priority list to fix right now so they choose not to use it, as a traditional balcony would be used.

No way! Even if I had kids, and had never slept walked in my life, I'd probably suddenly start to get paranoid that one day I suddenly would have an episode and sleep walk myself out to the balcony and over where there is no rail. Or if I had company I'd be scared that something would happen and they would be harmed. Maybe it wouldn't be logical for me to feel that way, but with such an obvious danger, I'd be on edge about that balcony.

No, but I have a definite fear of falling. Maybe the door to it is nailed shut or blocked off. One person one night gets drunk and falls off, gets hurt, that will be a problem. We have houses with a door that used to have a balcony. Now there is a door up in the air with nowhere to go but down. I hope they have the door borded up on the inside or nailed shut. Different strokes for different folks.

That's very dangerous and I don't know why anyone would not make it one of their first priorities! Maybe they don't use the balcony? Still, it must be very strange looking without railings. I would definitely fix it right away if it were on my house!

It is always good to take dogs for a walk because they like going outside, and that is pretty odd that they have lived there for two years and their balcony still does not have railings, and it is everyones job to worry about the health and safety of our neighbors and all humanity, and at least they do not have any kids at the moment so they would not fall off,and hopefully if they had children, they would have the common sense enough to put railings on the balcony,to keep their children safe, and I know adults can fall just as easy, and I would not live in house with a balcony that had no railings because I have no balance and I know I would fall off the balcony and hurt myself.

Hey ronaldinu! That really sounds very dangerous! Why would anyone have a balcony without some type or railings? Why would they even make a balcony with them to begin with? That seems unfinished to me! I guess it's possible that they don't intend to use it, but it still seems rather strange to have one and not use it either. It is definitely a safety issue and they really should put up railings whether they intend to use the balcony or not! What if someone makes a mistake and goes out there without knowing that it isn't finished?

I think I would do what it takes to fix that balcony up. In addition to danger it poses to owners of the house, it also make that balcony look weird. From that picture it seems that this balcony used to have some really old-style railings before...

Hiya ronaldinu, They should get that fixed up before something tragical happens there. Right now there are a lot of old Balconies here being repaired because of the bad quality metal they used in the first place. Some of the Balconies are only about 16 years old and they have galluping gutrot as we would call it where I come from and this place is full of kiddies and all these rotting balconies are high up too. Yesterday I went past a place which could be a lethal trap for children in particular as they love to play near rivers. This River is very small but has very steep embankments with no railings or protection around it at all. It really is a wonder that no one has fallen into it and injured themselves more than drowned as there are a lot of sharp craggy rocks down at the bottom and the embankment is very sharp cutting rock too.

Hiya ronaldinu, That is terrible really everyone is at risk. In a Seaport somewhere in Spain they did not put any safety around those steps that lead into the sea. Well actually it is very rare that they do it. A blind man walked down those steps and almost drowned hwhen he fell into the sea a passerby dived in and pulled him out. I ask myself what kind of a twerp would leave something so unprotected as it´s very easy for kiddies to get down there as well.

That would never do where I live. We have building codes that must be followed and new houses are inspected before they can be occupied. You would not get permission to move into a house where there were no railings on the balcony. Also all houses must have certain standards of flooring, plumbing and windows.

Definitely not! Forget about kids, it’s a big risk for the adults too. Many a times we just stroll on the balcony or terrace and I see so many people talking on their mobiles while they walk on their balconies…just imagine what would happen if your friends just miss their steps! I think they are putting their lives at risk unnecessarily.

Wow, that does sound dangerous! We were on vacation one year in Spain on the 9th floor of this hotel and the balcony was not even waist height. I thought that was dangerous and only went out on the balcony once! _Derek

In B.C., we have what is called an "Occupancy Permit" issued by the Provincial Building Inspector! All habitats MUST meet the building code for structural, electrical, plumbing...AND SAFETY! This UNIT (building) would NOT meet the criteria..therefore would be red-flagged and NOT issued an Occupancy Permit until the code was met. Aside from that, I think these persons are idiots! I am surprised their Insurance (Home-owners) would NOT make them put up safe and secure railings! Leaving themselves wide open for a Law suit! Cheers!

Well, they have their own freedom of doing so.. haha =D As long as nobody goes to the balcony, there will be no danger at all.. hehe ^_^ IN fact, i find it unique and standout among the rest.. haha =D For i will like a balcony without railing, meaning, i'm able to look down, without any boundaries.. haha =D It's like another form of excitment for me too.. lol =D
