What the heck is a kernel trap, what causes it and how the heck to get rid of it

I am not computer savvy when it comes to a blue screen and this unexpected kernel trap thing. I know only that it caused me to have try to reboot maybe five or six times to get onto the net. my son worked on it for a long time last night. a week ago he had installed Avast virus protection on my computer, and the very next morning I had this blue screen and the unexpected kernel trap. it kept my computer going around in circles and finally I both turned my computer off but clicked off the back switch too and waited just half a minute, logged back on and did manage to get onto the net again. My son thinks it may have something to do with Avast as it is something that's run from the first that seems to cause this blue screen kernel trap thing. any advice most appreciated. Anyone had any problems with avast?

This is the first time that I've heard of a kernal trap, but I know that last year when I was having problems with my computer it did something very similar to what you've described here. My husband ended up actually doing a complete reinstall of my operating system and then I reloaded my software and my antivirus software and since I've done that I've not had a problem with my computer doing odd stuff like that since then.

hi i had never heard of it before either but I am going to have my son do some uninstalling as something is definitely wrong. for two days I got on without any problem then today it did the samething so I again shut off the computer then turned the off switch in the back off just for thirty seconds then rebooted and no blue screen so I am longing to see myson come again and do something to get rid of that problem.

I've been using Avast for the past five years and haven't had any problems that involved Avast.

hi joyceshookery yes I have heard so many good things about avast that I went along with my son's notion to install it as the one I had would not let him install my new email thunderbird by mozilla and I really love my new email so much. I know it is not thunderbird as the problem did not start until after he had installed Avast. so we shall see as he will do some otherthings when he comes to see me next.

I don't know what a kernel trap is but I swore off most anti-virus programs. My son works on computers for a living now and he refuses to work on those with Norton or other major antivirus. He told me about Panda Cloud, I installed it (it's free) and I haven't had any problems with my computer at all since I installed it in January. You don't have to update it or maintain it at all, it does all that for you. You might want to try it. It might even get rid of whatever you've got right now.

hi dragon54u I will tell my son about your experience with panda cloud and see if he cannot change from avast to panda cloud.this makes sense to me and might even get rid of the blue screen and the kernel trap.

Hi there Hatley! Definitely have your son uninstall Avast. Some computers can't run it and, since you posted that yours is an older one, that's most likely the problem. Since your problems started the very next day, Avast is the most obvious suspect and you should always start with the most obvious suspect. Good luck!

hi spalladino yes thats what I am coming to the conclusion with and my son says there are a number of free antivirus protections out there that might not cause any problems with my particular machine. I do thank you for your suggestions.

Hi Hatley, I have not heard of Avast, but I think you should change it if it is going to cause more prolems with your computer goind down, I don't understand much about computers myself and my husband takes care of that side of things as I would be lost and would be pulling my hair out, LOL, hope all will be ok, hugs. hi tamarafireheart yes I think my son is going to have to take Avast out and try some other anti virus program as I sure am no computer expert, I have always left that to my son to do I did not have a computer during our marriage and doubt if my husband would have been able to fix computer problems any way.

Hi Hatley, I have heard that Avast is a good ant-spyware but have never had it installed myself so wouldn't know about any problems with it, though a couple of my friends have it and they have always said how good it is and they have never had any problems with it..so hope that helps but probably someone else will be able to give you a bit more information about it...hugs LoLo

Hatley I forgot I have an anti-spyware I would recommend to anyone it is really good and protects you from everything it is called SuperAntiSpyware free Edition although it is free it has protected my computer for years but you have to run it yourself whenever you do eg once a week or twice a week, a computer specialist and maker installed it for me and told me it is one only they normally use..so it is well recommended...hugs LoLo

Hi Hatley, I am glad your computer seems to be going alright now, and hope you haven't had anymore problems with it, when they are working alright etc they are the best thing since sliced bread-but when they go wrong or play up they are the worst thing made-lol Truly I do highly recommend the SuperAntiSpyware, and at one time a creator of a site couldnt get one installed so I mentioned this to him and he installed it, he was so happy he had as it picked up on things that his other anti-viruses hadn't he too lives in America..so give it a try if you feel like it, but really it is a good anti-spyware. hugs LoLo

I do not know Hatley, but it sounds like something that might keep happening until you figure out what it is with avast and your computer that does not get along entirely. Hope you can figure it out soon though.

hi somecowgirl yes there is definitely a problem and he is thinking about uninstalling avast and seeing if that causes the problem. so far I have actually got on but only by shutting it down then shutting it off at the back to reset it. that did work after I had wasted a good half hour this morning, and here its the last day before payoff and wanted to finish up nicely today.thanks me too.
