Egg separated question

So I've been reading in several recipe books in the past few days and some recipes call for say one egg and an egg white. So what does one do with the part of the egg that isn't needed in the recipe weather it be yolk or white? I know if it calls for more than one yolk or white, I'll try to cook up the other portion especially if it's a white and the yolk I can mix in with the dogs food. Though cooking up the one lil bit of egg seems a waste of time but it seems a waste to toss it away too KWIM? What do you do in these senarios?

You may want to check into freezing them. My mother used to have chickens and in the summer she would freeze them for winter. i am not sure how she did it, but i do not think she added anything to them. When you collect all your extras, they would tally up quickly.

http://whatscookingamerica.net/Eggs/FreezingEgg.htm This link talks about how to freeze eggs, egg yolks and egg whites. It is optional to add salt or sugar to egg yolks or whole eggs. Nothing is needed for egg whites.

Thanks Gerty I also read your full comment and forgot how to add extra brown when baking. We learn everyday with friends like you.

because some recipes dont require the other part of the egg because it will make the food not as expected.. for example in a leche flan all egg white but be seperated and only egg yokes are needed.. in that scenario we use egg whites in another recipe or we cook it directly.. a fried egg that doest have a yoke.. :)

Cooking the whites are especially good for you rather than the yolk, when I have the yolk, I save them to add to a omelett the next day, or a cake that I am making or I freeze then and use them in recipes. Good idea you have there about adding them to the dog food, My dog loves eggs, so I could scramble it up for him, he dont' like the whites just the yolk.

left over egg whites are great in replacing the regular scrambled eggs. or make a meringue with it afterwards. or use it as a beauty treatment for the face. as with the leftover yolk poach it by itself. it'd eat this gladly .

Well when you put it this way, I can see that I am a wasteful person. Whenever I'm making something that calls for only egg whites, then I will toss the yolk along with the shell into the trash. The same doesn't really go when I am making something that calls for only yolks. I like to scramble the whites and eat them that way with a little bit of onion and some salsa so I will cook those up and make a meal out of it.

It depends on what I am making and how ambitious I am. Some recipes you can add the whole egg and it doesn't affect it any, that depends on what it is you are making. Sometimes I will look for another recipe that calls for what I am having left and I will make that too. If I am making a box of white cake mix that calls for only the egg white I go ahead and add the egg yolk to it. I have never had any problems with this. You can always use an extra egg white in meringue for a pie. If it is lemon pudding I am making I do not add the egg white to the lemon because it makes the lemon lumpy. Lately my cats get the left overs and think they got a treat.

You got some good advice about freezing the yolks or the whites. I have not tried that as yet. I use them up as follows: egg yokes: Put the extro yolk into an omlette mixture make an egg wash for scones or biscuits make custard and use it with the custard powder and milk make egg drops with a bit of flour and another egg, for soups egg whites make maccaroons make coconut cookies make scrambled eggs with eggwhites mix a whole egg into the white mixture for scrambled eggs make healthy omlettes using egg whites only.

I always throw the other part away. I didn't know anything else to do with the other part except cook it and eat it and usually I don't want to eat the other part while I'm cooking. I know it's a waste to throw it away but that's what I do since I didn't know what else to do with it.

Hello, What I normally do is put the part of the egg that you dont require for your recipe into a glass, add alittle salt and pepper, whisk, then drink it. I know this may not be to everyones taste but I enjoy it. You should give it a try, nothing ventured , nothing gained. Have a happy cooking day.

It's usually the egg yolks that I did not need when I was baking. I would cook them and use them for egg sandwiches for the kids in the morning (egg, English muffin, some cheese and some kind of meat). Sometimes I would cook them and add them to my dog's dinner or even throw them into the field for the birds and animals.

I think you can always make use of the other part whether its the yellow one or the white one. You can make a flan if you have to use the white one and set aside the yellow one. You can also make icing out of the white ones if you have to use the yellow one. There are so many ways you can use it actually. No need to discard it cause that would be a waste of time and money.

there are a lot of style in cooking, whether or not the white and the yolk of an egg should separated or it should be both together for the perfect ingredients for the recipes. Just follow in the recipe or you could experiment what other dish it can made. If you think it is just a waste. well at least you can give it to the dog. Well practice makes perfect.

When I make leche flan, i normally would cook the egg whites that I didn't get to use for the flan and make them into egg white omelette. They're yummy and healthier :-). If there are still more remaining, i pour them over to my plants. I've read somewhere that egg whites are great for plants

The advice about freezing is good. If I think I may need it for "egg wash" I put it in a little sealed bowl. An egg wash is milk or water mixed with egg brushed onto something that you want to brown and be shiny, like a pie, or some types of rolls. That little bit can be scrambled up or added to something else, like pancakes. You can wash your hair with it and a bit of shampoo, for shiny hair. Just rinse it out well. You can make homemade facial masks. Look online for recipes. Yolks help dry skin, whites help oily skin.

I use the whites or the yolks for omelets rather than throw it away which will be such a waste.

I know.. that is annoying isn't it? and since I don't like eggs, not like I can save it for breakfast on either count! But what I do is keep a can of the dry egg white powder (buy it at craft store baking department for $7 adn use a 40% off coupon. Good size can too) and then I just am able to use that (2 tbls = 1 egg yolk) when just the whites are called for, other than that, if it is the yolks called for, I might just find something else to bake, or toss the whites. But you can freeze the whites, check into that. I don't just cause I so seldom use them..theyd get freezer burn before I did and with the power whites... they are just as good. I've used them to make meringue cookies and the turn out great.

Don't waste it...You can make them both as a mayonnaise... You can make the white as white mayonnaise and the yolk as yellow mayonnaise...hOW to make a mayonnaise? these are the additional recipes: 1. 3 eggs white or yolks 2. 2 tbsp white vinegar 3. 2 lemon juice 4. 1 tsp. salt 5. 1 tsp pepper as desired 6. 2/3 or 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil. Put the egg in a mixing bowl, put vinegar and lemon juice Use a whisk or electric mixer to beat it and slowly put the other ingredients until it is sticky. Use one stroke only... I hope you can try it. I have tried it because one of our requirement in my cooking class was to make a mayonnaise.

Hi there. You can use the yolk in baking or scrambled eggs. You can use it to brush oin pastry dishes or add to omelettes, quiches even mashed potatoes If you do not want to use it straight away it will freeze.
