Hey readers out there! So why do you read? Do you read because you find it relaxing or fun? Do you read to learn? Do you think more people should read for the reasons that you read? Please share! I read because I love it! I love getting lost in stories, it's a really great way to escape reality and entertain myself! I also read to learn. Even if I'm not reading an educational book, I'm still learning about the world, how to solve problems, and how to comprehend better. I think everyone should discover the joy of reading!

When I was a high school student, I saw a banner hosted in our library that greatly influenced me to have a habit of reading. The banner said, "Read, and a new world will open".

I agreed! I think there was a banner like that in our school library, but I'd already figured it out by high school age. New worlds open every time you open a new book.

I read because reading is something that engages my mind and it also engages my imagination. I've been an avid reader since I was a young girl and this is something that I've carried with me through every stage of my life to date. I don't have a specific kind of book that I like to read, I will read almost everything. I think that I will continue to be a reader for as long as I shall live because I love it.

Yay! Someone else who loves reading! I've been an avid reader since I was a little girl too, and I can't imagine life without a book in hand. It's great that you will read almost everything. I'm kind of exclusive to fantasy, though I've tried getting out of my bubble and reading other stuff. It didn't work out very well, but hey! I still love to read.

I love to read so much that if I don't have a book, I will find something whether a back of a cereal box or the encyclopedia..(Yes, I have taken an encyclopedia and browsed through it a few times..)

lol, when you said you've never gone that far, I thought you meant with the encyclopedia, not the cereal box.. Because I've found some who do read the cereal box, but as for the encyclopedia, I only known my daughter and I to do this when we have nothing to read..

lol! I've never gone quite that far, but if I don't have something to read I tend to get jittery. I'll make a mad dash to the library and take the first book that looks interesting to me. I have browsed through an encyclopedia, but never grabbed a cereal box.

I meant the cereal box. The encyclopedia isn't really all that extreme. I mean... it's still kind of a book. A cereal box isn't a book... it's breakfast! lol

Hi there. I read for two things. First, I read because I have to, like when I have to study for an upcoming exam. Second, I read because the title of an article interests me, like for some news that are shocking or articles about my health or any of my interests.

I read liked reading because I had to. Reading should really be something fun. I find that since I read for fun, reading for school isn't hard at all.

Really? that's good. I didn't really like my course in college that was why I also didn't have fun reading the books. I am glad I am done with school so that I can read whatever I want now.

Hi, nice question there. I read too often, just because its my hobby and I really get an experience to get out of this rut. I mostly read Sidney Sheldon or Agatha Christie. The plot and suspense just thrills me and many times I put down the book only after I finish it. Many times I read educational books too, since I am a web designer, I need lots of inputs to be taken in, and thanks to the internet I get many ebooks available which are available to read on the screen. But the fun is to relax in a chair, put a book in front of yours and have a cup of coffee with you. I feel that is the most efficient way to read a book.

There's no such thing as reading too often! At least, I don't think there is. Reading is one of the best things that you could be doing with your time. My Mom has a collection of Agatha Christie novels and I've thought about reading them. Maybe I will someone.

I read because I love stories. That's the first and most basic reason. I mostly read fiction and even when I read non fiction, it's usually biography or history, which is just true stories. The few times I read things that aren't strictly stories, it's because I've gotten curious about a subject and want to know more. And, often, I get curious because of a passing reference in a story. So, I'm pretty much someone who's never outgrown the love of bedtime stories. Or anytime, anywhere you can whip out a book stories.

I love stories too! I don't usually read non-fiction either, unless it's about a subject I'm really interested in. It's okay to never outgrow the love of bedtime stories. I think we really need stories as humans. They're what keep us inspired and going through life.

Firstly I read because I am a writer. You cant be a good writer without being a reader, unless you want everything you write to sound like sitcoms. I don't. Secondly I read because I have set a goal for myself to read a hundred books in a year,so far I have finished 51 and I am in the middle of three others. I am not one to give up on a goal.Thirdly I read because it is fun,it is an activity I can do for the most part wherever, even if I am feeling bad and cant get out of bed. That is important when you are someone who occasional gets sick or injured and cant get up for at least a couple days.

I agree. You can't be a good writer without being a reader. I'm also a writer, and I think that reading has been the single most important teacher of writing to me. I'm also aiming for a hundred books this year! I'm only on 46 though, so you're ahead of me. Good luck! I hope you make it to a hundred and beyond!

I read english books and I read english newspaper. This is to broaden what I know in English language and grammar. i read books to entertain and to learn also. I do have a pocket books and self help books, for me reading them is a investment. Investment of learning. I read street signs too, I read everything I see. I read labels I read minds (joke, oh hopefully I do have that). I don't know how to read sign language but I want to learn. As we are living each they we never stop learning and so as reading. And additional, reading can save our live.

I love to read and the reason I read is because a story will take you to a far away places. Where you have to use your imagination and think at times especially reading a murder mystery type of book. It can take you to places you never imagined and many times while reading you will learn things you didn't know. Reading is relaxing and wonderful when you can find the time to read a good book in which you don't want to put it down. Those books are the best in my opinion.

I like reading for the sake of running away to faraway places too. But I read lots of fantasy fiction, so I like stories that are set in completely new worlds with new creatures, new heros, and new dangers! Reading really inspires me and gives me strength. I love the books that you don't want to put down!

I have always enjoyed reading. Novels are the most fun to read. I like historical romances and horror thrillers the best to read. Reading can take you places in your mind that you could never go to any other way. It is a sense of escape and fantasy we often need.

We do need an escape! I typically read fantasy fiction, but I've liked some historical romances. I stay away from horror though. I'm scared too easily! lol

I love reading personally. Its beena favorite pasttime of mine sicne I can remember. It's both relaxinf and funa nd exciting and soothing and entertainment in general for me. I get into the stories and writing anbecome compl;etely absorbed in the words that just engulf me with their wonder. I get transformed intoa different world - into someone elses mind and thoughts and dreams. They help me in life later as they amy teach me something or give me an example of something or just give me the imntelligence or vocabulary I need to succeed in the world. It is also a great conversation starter. Talking about books and stories can go on for a long while, especially if you and the person you are conversing with have opposite veiws on the subject at hand. I agree that everyone should discover the joy of reading!

I agree! It is great for conversation! I got a shirt for my birthday this year that says, "Will Talk Books With Anyone". I love to read, and I'll talk about books to whoever will listen. It's a fun conversation, even if the person you're talking to has different views than you do. It really opens up new worlds.

I enjoy reading for lots of different reasons - to learn, for enjoyment, escapism, relaxation. I enjoy autobiographies and history books (especially on the Holocaust and Hiroshima & Nagasaki and survivors stories), some true crime. I find thrillers are good escapism - Tess Gerritsen, Martina Cole, Minette Walters, that kind of thing. I think everyone should read - I don't mind what their reasons are! :-)

Me too. I think everyone should read, whether it is to learn, escape, to relax, or some other reason. Reading something, anything, is engaging your mind and putting you in a whole new place, and opening up new ideas to you. No matter what you read or why you read it.

Go for it! Read things that really capture your imagination! I'm never bored with reading, but I've been reading for a long time and it comes naturally to me. I think everyone should try their hand at becoming an avid reader, or at least try to read twelve books every year.

That's right, I think a person who reads learn something new with almost every book that may be read. It transfers you to another world as you try to imagine and to understand the mind and the thoughts of who wrote the book. Reading is quite interesting and it open minds. So for me, it's the same: I like reading because doing so I feel transfered to another world. It is like an escape from the present and the reality. And, I believe that we learn a lot reading and it's fun. Apart from that, it's a healthy hobby.

Whenever I read it's because I want to take in a good, interesting story. I'll be honest, I don't read a lot. When I do, however, I can't seem to put the book down.

I read because I find it entertaining and even when I'm reading a fiction book I can still learn something. I find it interesting to find out about places I've never been and completely different lifestyles the characters may have. I also find it helps me relax before sleeping. As a writer, I enjoy reading so I can see what I like about other people's writing, and I can hope to emulate in my own. I also read in German, as a fun way to improve my vocabulary and comprehension for my second language.
