Why do you abandon a website that you were active on?

My internet history started back in the 1990s. First I went on AOL and checked out all the chat rooms, checked out news sites, found shopping sites, and got connected to people on e-mail. About 5 years ago, I discovered Multiply, a social site very much like MySpace. A friend on Multiply referred me to Yuwie. A friend on Yuwie referred me to myLot, and another one invited me to MoraChat. I don't remember how I got onto Facebook, probably an invite from a family member. Also, friends from Yuwie have invited me to practically every social and earning site on the planet. Too many websites. lol I have a pattern, I guess. I get really involved in 2 or 3 sites and I don't get over to the other ones very often. And now that work has blocked some sites, I can only get to certain ones at night anyway. But the sites I am most active on are the ones that my closest friends are active on. I haven't abandoned a site because of bullies or viruses or slowness or even boredom (except for PTCs - those bore me to tears). I have abandoned sites that just haven't taken off. But the main reason I become inactive is that people leave and the site just isn't the same any more. Have you abandoned any sites that you were really fond of? And what were your reasons?

Is forgetting I signed up with them a form of abandonment? If so, I've abandoned more sites than I can remember. Occasionally, I remember a site I signed up for and go have a peek. Things like chat are never the same when the people you got to know aren't there anymore. I used to be big on chat but now I feel that I have absolutely nothing in common with whatever is going on there.

I don't remember signing up for a lot...only facebook, linkedin, twitter, mylot. The only one I'm active on is mylot. Once in a great while I'll look at Facebook, but it's so much trivia... But I won't drop Facebook, because that's where my nieces and nephews post and I keep up with them there... The others...I guess you can say I abondoned them.

Most of my family is on Facebook also. I don't get into all the games and apps and such, I mostly just say hi to people. Once in a while, I'll do one of the quizzes or something...

Yeah, people have tried to get me into Farmville, Mafia Wars, etc. To me it's just such a great waste of time... I look at the pictures and videos they post and comment and that's about it.

I met you on Yuwie and for awhile I was also active on Multiply. I think it was you who invited me here...lol. I leave cause of several things, boredom, lack of time and culled out the least interesting or most boring sites, and major reason for leaving Yuwie, the administration allowed bullies and cheaters to over run the place, and me and my big mouth exposing them, made the site VERY unattractive (not friendly). In other words, the fit hit the shan and I got so mad I deleted my account in righteous indignation.

I don't know if you saw, but they set up a council of 6 "honest, trustworthy and loyal" people to improve the site. Their secret club was accidentally public for a while, so we could all see who those people were. It was the same gang of bullies and cheaters. That pretty much did it for me. My account is still there, but other than logging on once every so often to see if I have messages and comments, I don't even go there.

That's exactly why I left. When Korry came to answer my blog on the cheating going on, I knew it was over for the site. Bad administration ruined a great site. Let's just hope super dork doesn't take it in his head to run for president...I'd have to expose him nationally!

I didnt like Facebook. I joined it because I wanted to contact one of my friends with whom I'd lost contact, and I was desperately trying to contact her for some personal reasons. Actually her parents were forcing her brother on me - asking me to accept him as my caretaker. I wanted her to intervene. Other than that, facebook doesnt appeal to me. One of my friends stayed over at my place and introduced me to Orkut. I was not happy with that either, though when compared to Facebook, it was more colorful. Mylot appealed because it was colorful, and yet neatly designed. Script was of right size. :) I am not on any other social website. If you receive any invitation with my name please consider it to be spam. :)

For me to take an initial liking - yes. I do have same set of friends here and there. Only difference is I have more friends here, as many are from other nations. In second stage that was the attraction because I wanted to know about your culture and your way of thinking right and wrong.

Let's see . . . I used to be very active on Baby Center. I joined in on a few different "forums" there regularly. I think I started going there to pass the time away when I was pumping! Then I got too busy as my daughter got older and besides they also totally changed the format that it was confusing to me . . . so I haven't really bothered to go back regularly since. I got obsessed with Yahoo Answers to the point I was at the top of the leaderboard of my category . . . but then I was losing heart in the whole system. I then joined the Yahoo Answers Suggestion Board where there were a bunch of silly amusing regulars . . . but then I just walked away from it (forgot why, maybe I just got too bored). The only social networking site I've ever gone on is Facebook - but I still go there . . . I know I stay there because all my friends and some relatives are on it - it's a good way of keeping in touch with everyone.

Sometimes you outgrow a site. I was going to an Aspies and their partners forum for a while there, but at some point it was no longer useful.

I stopped going on this one website full of games because I would spend too much time on it so I stopped. There was another website where I made money but they blocked me from it because I made two accounts by accident :/ and that wasn't allowed.

Hi Dawn. As you know, I was active on yuwie for a couple of years, but yuwie changed in many ways. Apart from "super" and his cronies and all the bullying, which could be avoided, the admin failed and the site itself changed. Yuwie lost its appeal and members left in droves. I still have my account there but hardly ever call in. Being a super optimist, I hope it will return to its former glory, but I'm not holding my breath. Yuwie now only pays USA, UK and Canada members, but that doesn't interest me. I would pay them to be a member if it was the same as it was at the beginning.

wow i have left plenty of sites for all kinds of reason. i like you think the biggest reason is bored!! then there is the lack of income... those are the worst. but for the most part in the last 5-6 years i have only been involved with sites that pay. (thank goodness) and as for socical networking sites i am on yuwie, facebook and of cause mylot. I am not as active as i use to be on yuwie because i can't use it at work during the day. but i do get on there every once in a while to say hi to friends, and just see what's going on. Mylot and facebook are my first loves and have been for a while now. I am all about creating relationships and income. for me those two things go hand in hand.

Yeah, I have one. It was actually the first (social) site I'd ever been a part of. I was on it for a few years. I got so involved with it I was even asked to become a co-moderator (the first one ever that was on there). Oh, how I loved that site! I was so comfortable on there! It felt like home! That is, until a member on there ruined it for me. However, it wasn't so much what they said that made me leave, it's what the others didn't say that bothered me. After that it didn't feel so much like home anymore. So I ended up leaving...

Only reason I'm on Facebook is that it's popular. And I don't mean that I have to go and do whatever's popular, just that that's where most of my family and many of my friends are, so I go there to say hi and keep on top of what they're doing.

The first forum I ever joined was a Danish discussion forum, and I was very active there for a couple of years. After that time I started participating in international discussions instead, and I was away from the site for one of two years. When I returned I discovered that most of the senior members were still there, and the site doesn't seem to have changed much. I haven't abandoned the site completely, but I only visit it a few times a year instead of every day. I also used to be pretty active on MySpace and Hipforums, and I still visit those sites every once in a while, but definately not as often as I used to.

Ah but what did you abandon those sites for?

There are a couple of reasons why I abandoned the Danish site. They had a lot problems on the site, it happened quite often that we weren't able to open the discussions or respond to the discussions, and many people had to create new profiles, because their old profiles didn't work anymore etc. I was tired of all the glitches and the other problems. Another reason was the discussions, and I started getting bored, because the same topics appeared over and over. I abandoned MySpace because I got tired of all the spam. I was a member of a lot of different groups, but it was often hard to find the "real" discussions, because there was so much spam and so many discussions where people just posted links that weren't the least bit related to the topics

I don't know if this applies, but mine are for sports news sites. I haven't been to a lot of social networking sites, in fact, I just got into Facebook a couple of weeks ago. And I don't even go there often. Anyway, I use to go to CNNSI and ESPN websites daily. But eversince I found another site which showcased more of my favorite sports -hockey, I've abandoned both CNNSI and ESPN. So my reason: more content on other sites.

are you subtly hinting something...? well, i was once quite active on a few...but i had to trim it down or it could have gotten out of control for me. so i narrowed it down to amount of friends i had on a site and my interest in the site itself. and then i found myLot. so now i have another site that i'd be active on for a long time more

He had several reasons. Most of them were, as you say, personal, offline reasons. But my friend is very into politics, and he was very disgusted by the personal attacks that often take place in the politics section here.

There were times that I get frustrated with this too many online earnings sites so I made a decision to focus only on one sites or few sites instead rather than wasting time and end up loosing it all because I'm not able to get any referrals. It took me almost half a year to decide which one should I let go first, till they become scam one by one so it leave me no choice but to focus on the legit one which is neobux.

Well when they turn scam, that makes the choice easy, but it's no fun having that happen when you've invested a lot of your time there!

hi dawnald I was on a zillion survey sites and got a lot of surveys to do.but after filling out a ton of spaces then I get this message you do not qualify for some reason but we entered you into our sweepstakes. sorry. well gee so was I and finally the light dawned on me they did not want anyone over a certain age. so I did find Harris poll where i earned some great gifts and mysurvey.com where I get a ten dollar check every so often. Also synovate that also pays me and I have no problem qualifying for their surveys. I also belonged to a diabetic chat line until a bunch of people became so rude I just chucked it. no moderator to stop the harassing either. It was a great site until some weird people started all sorts of bullying. You would think that it would be so helpful to share things with others who were also diabetics but some were just plain mean hearted.

I used to do surveys just for the fun of it, but eventually they got boring. But that sucks having to go all the way through the process only to get a 'do not qualify' message. Can't they determine that up front somehow?

well when i first started yuwie, i thought it would be nice. but it got to where the constant pop-up hassles were not worth the few cents of staying there. i guess mylot spoiled me with the more fun factor i used to spend hours on myspace, then discovered more fun, make money , on mylot for the very same things i do on there. so, thus ive pretty well abandoned myspace for mylot. only go there now once in a while just to feed the virtual pet

Yes I have. For various different reasons like I just bored with them, they were scams, or I found some of them completely useless and eating up a lot of my precious time. Now I only keep those that really matter to me like Facebook, Mylot, my blogs, and MP5.

Hi dawn! The possible reasons that can make me abandon a site are (one) I found another website to get active on, (two) I was been busy with my offline tasks, (third) I forgot my username or password in that certain site. But actually even I already abandoned a site, there's still a tendency that I may come back, if I miss it, just like myLot, I might became inactive for weeks, but I still came back. :)
