When was the last time you had a good home cooked meal?

I cook for myself all the time. But because I'm single, I don't ever make a big spread for myself. And I like to cook from scratch, but like I said, it's never much. Last Friday I traveled to meet up with my aunts, and my Aunt Melba had made a huge dinner for all of us. She brought out tomatoes from her garden, black eyed peas she had picked from her neighbor's garden (she didn't steal them, they offered her some of their excess), okra another neighbor had dropped by with from his garden), meatloaf, corn bread, coleslaw, and mashed potatoes. To top it off, for dessert we had the option of fresh canteloupe or home baked brownies. I had both. lol I had not eaten a meal like that in years. It was so good. I sent her a thank you note today. And although the food was delicious, the conversation around the dinner table was even better. When was the last time you had a good old fashioned home cooked meal?

Well I try to have at least one good meal once a week or more, but many times it is just me at the table or my son and I. Occasionally the husband joins us when he feels like it.. If you were closer, I'd invite you over, except you'd have to put up with a very hot house, no AC here...

Oh I was, until today, the humidity broke overnight and though it is still hot, it isn't as bad as it was and the computer isn't complaining either..:) When it was really hot and humid, by the middle of the day the fan on the computer would start making noise, so we'd have to shut down for it to cool off..

Hi Amber! I'm glad that you got to spend time with your family and have such a pleasant dinner! I haven't had a good home cooked dinner since the last time I made one!lol And since it's been so hot that would have been about two weeks now! I do more cooking in the Winter than in the Summer! I do love to cook and Lonnie loves to eat and love to have a "full dinner" which I guess is what he grew up having. When I used to cook for myself I did whatever, but he likes to have a bigger meal than I am used to cooking! And we don't talk much when we eat because he is too busy eating and enjoying his food! My mom doesn't cook at all anymore so when I go to visit her we either go out to eat or get takeout which is fine with me! But, I did learn how to cook from my mom, grandmother and greatgrandmother so I am I pretty good cook! My friends love my cooking, but I can't afford to keep inviting them over!

Like you, I live alone (save for my kitty Kissy) and I always cook from scratch too. But I have to admit, ever since being alone (almost four years now) I don't fuss as much as I used to, and particularly now in the summer...too darn hot to cook! I usually don't cook something really special and go all out unless it's my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, but I'll still fix something. Like tonight I'm having homemade chicken nuggets (not a complete vegetarian yet), homemade chicken flavored rice and green beans. Most of the time during the summer though I live on homemade salads..like make homemade macaroni, potato and tuna salads and have them with lettuce and tomatoes Speaking of holidays...going to have to figure what to fix now that I'm more vegetarian...unless of course I uh, cheat a bit and allow myself some of the more traditional types of foods for holidays

Well, there are still those farms that raise chickens cage free and are supposed to end the lives of the chicken without a lot of bloodshed. It's the violence that is the problem, correct? What do you think about fish though?

oh my gosh AmbiePam its been at least two years, and it was my own coo king too as my son is the only relative I have in this area at all.For my birthday last Nov15 my best friend Nelda took me out to lunch in my favorite restaurant but thats not the same as home cooked.Your dinner makes my mouth water and that is silly as I just came back from dinner at four in t he afternoon here at Gold Crest. we had chicken Alfredo which was not too bad, and watermelon for dessert but the broccoli was cooked til it was grey green why do they do that, I like broccoli but it does not need a lot of cooking at all.Your dinner sounds so good and so healthy with fresh veggies wow.

yOUR AUNT'S DINNER SOUNDED REAL GOOD, ALOT OF MY FAVES. i TO COOK FROM SCRATCH i THOUGHT I HAD A GOOD SUPPER LAST NIGHT. I bought me some okra at the farmer's market yesterday, candied 2 sweet potatoes i needed to use, buttered carrots & some left over goulash i had made. The sweet potatoes were my dessert. I'll have to eat that for a few days but i don't mind that.

The last time i cooked for the whole family with my best dish was a week ago. I went to the market and bought a Big Milkfish. I also bought different cuts of pork, beef and chicken. Then lots of vegetables. I cooked pork "sinigang", beef steak and Pochero that day and the family is so happy that i was the one who did that knowing that i really am a great cook! I really felt my tummy is going to blast that night after dinner. we also had a great and warm conversation during the meal which is a good thing to have during great meals. and for dessert, it was a mango ice cream. gosh! i want to do that again soon!

Just the other day actually. My husband likes his meals. Even when it is hot enough to peel paint of the trailer. Just the other day I made roast with brown gravy, and green beans and mashed potatoes from our garden we put out this year. We also had sliced tomatoes and cucumbers and corn on the cob and cornbread muffins. and my husband and his brother split a watermelon from the garden which was sweet as sugar.

The last time I got a home cooked meal was today. We cook from scratch. I am exhausted from it though. My aunt has a garden and she shares wonderful vegetables with us.

Since my mother left to go on an overseas long holiday I haven’t had an old fashioned ‘remind me of my childhood’ meal! I did cook spaghetti Bolognese last night and I must say it was pretty good and it’s not often I can say that about my own cooking! I think the most memorable old fashioned home cooked meals are the ones that include good company because it is not necessarily just about the dishes being served as you found...

That's a good question! I can't seem to remember when was my last time. I try and cook sometimes, but never something I would consider as a 'good-home-cooked-meal'. Specially now that it is summer. It seems there is a lot of grilling and barbecues going on. I wonder when I could have one of my own? Preferrable somebody knowledgeable preparing it.

Unfortunately, life has gotten in the way and I haven't had a home cooked meal in weeks. My husband and I have decided to make time to cook at least once a week!

When I went to visit my friend in Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago. She serves up wonderful homemade meals. For my birthday supper we had pork chops, salad, augratin potatoes, corn and B-day cake and ice cream for dessert. Though we stamp the whole time she has all the meals ready......and on my last day there I take them out to eat. She a good cook! LOL...but I gained some weight while visiting. I am like you....I barely cook for myself. Too much Cherrios and toast lately but its one of my favorite meals! LOL

Oh, thqat must be many months ago. I don't cook at home. In fact, that is some thing I am not good at at all. I only make coffee in the morning at breakfast time. Lunch and dinner, I have been having at different restaurants every day.

I didn't eat it when it was freshly prepared, but my kids babysitter made beef and noodles the other night and I had some heated up when I got home from work that night. I don't cook from scratch very often at all anymore unless it is in the crock pot.

I eat home cooked food everyday but its not cooked in my house.I am single and disabled and live alone. However a man comes to my house everyday and stays with me throughout the day.Till 1996 my mom who was alive then used to cook at home. She was a terrific cook and used to cook my favorite dishes. However after `96 she developed low BP and Parkinsons and could not cook. Then for 6 years we were getting food home delivered from a hotel but it wasn`t good.then we found a lady wo used to cook in bulk and then deliver the food to various people. Again we did not find it very good so we changed it as we found another lady doing the same thing but her food was better than the former one. I have continued with her but since it is routine and day in an day out eating the same fare has become monotonous. My mother is no more and i am alone but am still continuing with this lady. However i do long for a good old fashioned meal but it has now become a distant dream for me as there is nobody to cook for me.

A long, long time ago. I think the last homecooked meal I had was at my grandmother's house and it was all fixed by my aunt. Who is a wonderful cook. I miss my grandmother's cooking. When she was able, I use to love her fried potatoes. I couldn't get enough of them. Something about the way she cooked them. If I remember right the oil was a blend of bacon grease and vegetable oil. And they always seemed like they came out right every time. I, on the other hand, always used to try to cook those potatoes like her. But, as in all things, it doesn't even come close.
