What can you tell me about pressure cookers?

On a recent holiday to visit relatives I acquired a pressure cooker from my husband's grandma. I know my mom loves hers and I also know that some people can't stand the things. What kind of experience have you had using a pressure cooker? What can you tell me about them? So far I've only tried it out to make rice and I was quite impressed with how fast it cooks it. I have a rice cooker but hate having to wait 45 minutes for brown rice - with the pressure cooker it cooked in about 15. I'm looking for recipes to try in it, preferably easy ones with a few simple ingredients. While I'm still experimenting I don't want to waste a bunch of time and money if it's a flop! Any easy pressure cooker recipes you could share?

Pressure cookers are only good for cooking tough old goats. What takes 5 minutes to cook is really 5 extra minutes for it to heat up, ten extra minutes to cool down, and 10 minutes to clean the damn thing afterwards. No time is saved on normal cooking. Nothing tastes better, in fact it tastes worse more often than not. So what is the use? A slow casserole is much better in my opinion.

My Mom loved hers and cooked stew in it. That's about the only time I ever saw her use it. Just be careful not to forget the thing or it can explode. I think some people can with them.

Modern pressure cookers have a lot of safety valves so it´s really difficult to have it explode. It´s as difficult as to set the house on fire: it can be done but you usually don´t.

My grandma used hers a lot, especially when she canned. But you have to be very careful, after all it's a "pressure" cooker! One time Grandma left the room because one of us kids was screaming or something, I forget, but I'll never forget the loud noise and Grandma's dismay at the mess in the kitchen when the pressure cooker blew its top! Food was all over the place, we all pitched in and cleaned it up and but I've been scared of them ever since. So be careful!!

I do a lot of cooking in my pressure cooking. It saves me time and money. I buy dry legumes and soak them overnight. Then, the next day, I cook them in the pressure cooker for 10 minutes. I don´t add anything: just the legumes. I let them stand without opening it for maybe 10 to 20 minutes and then I take out them and prepare just the amount I want. The rest goes to the freezer with some of the water I put to cook them. I put the salt and pepper and the rest of the good things with the diced fried onion or whatever you will add. I like my lentils with some rice but I usually use leftover fried cooked rice for that. When I only make garbanzos, I cook first either pigs legs or hams and cook the garbanzos in that broth. YUMMY!!! Most of the tough meats can turn into wonders if you cook them there with onions, sweet peppers and a couple of carrots for 10 to 15 minutes. You make your dish and add other ingredints later. I take out the broth for other uses and use the carrots for salads ( they taste better than if cooked in plain water).

They are very good for grains and pulses that would otherwise take a long time to cook (and use a lot more fuel). I tend to cook large batches of things like chick-peas when I need them.

Pressure cooker is good to cook the food and rice.It will take few minutes to cook compare to others. When we cook food in pressure cooker it is very Delicious to have it. Some people make cake in pressure cooker and i had never try for it.

hi jesssp oh no my mom had one years ago and they are just plain nuisances as the food tastes awful.I would much rather get a crock pot myself and slow cook stuff. I cannot cook now as I am stuck in this tiresome retirement center. believe me you really do not save time with pressure cookers and they are a mess to clean.I would never use a pressure cooker, one miscue and you have food on the ceiling the floor and everywhere else. get a crockpot instead is my advice.
