Goldfish eyeballs for breakfast?

Or perhaps a midnight snack? Double the crayfish is now a murderer. A couple of mornings ago, we came downstairs to find that she had eaten the goldfish's eyes, and some other parts too. R had taken the tank partition out, because the crafty crayfish had been using it to climb out and escape, and we were tired of finding her in Naomi's shoes, under Naomi's bed, etc. Sadly, the goldfish did not live to tell the tale. At least I assume it didn't die first of natural causes and get eaten later. No more goldfish as long as the crayfish is with us. And on another subject, I hear that our neighborhood beavers, beaver lodge and beaver dam have been removed because of the fact that their dam causes the area to flood. Sigh, I didn't think they were causing any harm, and I kind of liked having them around here. I hope they were just relocated and have found themselves a nice, new home. And that's the animal bulletin for August 14, 2010. Does anybody else have any crayfish stories, opinions about beaver removal or other animal tidbits that they'd like to share with me?

Husband doesn't listen to anybody but himself sometimes. I didn't feel right about removing the partition, but I didn't feel right about the crayfish constantly escaping either.

He should replace the goldfish then. And with a new bowl as well. That is what men get when they don't freaking listen.

We are anti-American here. Anti-American Signal Crayfish that is. They are taking over our rivers and streams and decimating our national crayfish. On July 4th little plastic Stars and Stripes flags flutter in the currents as Signal Crayfish celebrate not only their independence from the oppressive taxing but not representing British; but also the fact that the American colonisation of the "old" country has begun. It's not safe to go back into the water.....yet!

No real animal news from me lately. Now, if we were talking about insects, there are plenty of insect stories to go around these days around here. It seems that everyone that I know has got a huge problem with fruit flies and it is difficult (if not impossible to get rid of them). We are currently on our second bottle of bug spray and it really doesn't seem to be making a difference at all even though it boasts that it will kill bugs for up to four weeks. I'll be happy when it starts cooling down and there are less bugs.

Eek! My daughter loves her carnival winnings - her 2 goldfish - I best not tell her your crayfish story! I think there may be a crayfish in her future kindergarten class (we went to open house) - but it's by itself. No beavers here. Animal tidbit - hmmm. Been visiting the duck pond at our local college every week with the kids. About a month ago there were little ducklings following their mama . . . this month my daughter was upset there were no ducklings anymore. Actually they WERE there, they just grew (big and fast!)!

My nephew likes to catch them and go fishing for catfish with them. We have alot of them that can be found in our yards. and creeks we have. Although I know you can eat them. I could never bring myself to do so. But I know I used to catch them when I was a kid and put them in jugs till my parents made us throw them out a few days later. My brother in law catches really big catfish by using the crayfish tails. I don't know anything about beavers then that they build dams. I know I should find out more. My education is sadly lacking a lot.

No but I just had a possum that the neighbor killed. It was sneaking around my garage and they can be very mean.....I wasn't home when they did it....we have suddenly had a new population of them moving into the neighborhood...and we live smack dab in the middle of town!

I've never heard of a crayfish as a pet! Sorry for the loss of the goldfish... but I would suspect the crayfish as well. No real tidbits to share today unless you count my kids as being animals *LOL*

hi dawn I did not know crayfish would eat gold fish, another thing learned today. I loved seeing the beavers damning up the water in our favorite fishing spot. they are such endearing busy little 'creatures and nobody bothered them as the water still was enough to make a good trout fishing stream. I lived in Sou th Dakota out on the prairie and we would go up to the "Black hIlls fishing on the weekends in the summer. its so beautiful up there in the summer. p;ine and spruce forests, creeks, and water falls, and of course MtRushmore and Harneys peak for those who love mountain climbing.I left South Dakota in my e arly twenties and never went back. too cold for me.We used to have Rocky Mou ntain Goats and sheep in the Black hills til some swine decided to go hunting. they were caught and fined steeply too.

Well it's one way to learn the circle of life. Since a crayfish will eat anything it can this is not surprising. Are you going to relocate it to the creek where it can continue it job of cleaning up the world?

Now that it has no fish to eat, I think we'll keep it for a while. If it pulls another escape, we may reconsider.

Hi ya dawny What a naughty crayfish you have!! That does seem to be a shame about the beavers as it must have been quite enjoyable observing them. I have no other stories to share with you on this subject for the moment I am afraid - sorry

Oh the poor goldfish! We have three goldfish that I have managed not to kill since we got them a few months ago and the thought of a nasty crayfish eating their eyes…Ewww!! I don’t have any new animal stories really. My little mini zoo is doing fine although I foresee a trip to the vet for the dog because she has a slight limp and being a 12 year old canine I foresee a large vet bill ahead!

What a shame about the beavers being moved. I love them, they are so cute. They have been reintroduced in the UK and have even been filmed on occasion, chopping down trees to make their dam. They're amazing animals! I hope you find out where "your" beavers have been moved to. As for the crayfish...NAUGHTY CRAYFISH!!

I'm just annoyed that they were moved. I don't see the point...
