Friends last night at about 2am, I got up from bed, I heard as if some baby was screaming; the sound came from upstairs which is vacant. I went searched here and there, it was coming from the guest room there, which was locked from outside as usual. For a moment, I thought it was some ghost inside. I was bold enough to open the lock and ohh my god I saw two cats inside, one of them was producing this sound. They came through the window, our maid servant had left open by mistake during the last cleaning. Any way I drove them away and closed the window etc. My neighbor said he too had heard this, but he did not care as it was ‘mating call’ of cats in heat. Honestly speaking I never knew this. Well are you aware of this, have you ever faced such, were you scared like me at first ? Please share and comment on this story. Professor

dear professor, you probably were not listening to their language. what you heard were cries and responding cries. but if you happened to listen well you will hear the male cat saying "nowwwwwwww!!!" and the female cat says "not nowwwwww!!" so next time you hear, do listen well. and you will say ann is a very keen observer. cheers! ann

dear apocalyptic, i thought so too when we had a discussion about cats. everybody was laughing. i was hoping the professor would find it not annoying next time he hears and that he listens well to it. but most cats speak english... dont you think? i wonder how they would say it in french or hindu. ann

Oh yes, the screeches of cats mating - rather scary, eh? This actually reminds me of my childhood nights. We didn't have any cats, but our neighbors did. And for some reason they would walk on our backyard walls and "do their thing" somewhere back there. My sister and I would be woken up by these loud cat screeches - which DOES sound like a baby crying in agony - and sometimes it seemed it would end in some sort of cat fight. It lasted long enough sometimes that we couldn't go back to sleep!! Now that I have my own family, we still do not have cats, but our neighbors downstairs did. Once and a while, they'd go directly to our other "below" neighbors' patio to "do their thing" (they didn't have cats) and we could hear every bit of it. Sigh. Why don't cats do it in their own place - why do them seem to have to go bother some other territory??? Anyway, that neighbor moved, so we haven't heard the crazy screeches since.

we are bothered more, specially when are already asleep, then we are just awaken for with all the noise... I am just scared a lot of times, specially, I remember waking, up when my first 3-4 months after i got discharged from hospital where i spent 4-5 days comatose, that was the 3-6 months of all adjustment, and more I really dream a lot, daily....

There were some cats in my old neighbourhood that used to like to mate under the neighbour's cars at night. There was no way I could sleep with the window open, because their noises would keep the whole family awake all night. Once I got tired of the noise, and turned the hose on them. LOL Sadly, they were back the next night.

There are a lot of wild cats around our house and we have had the opportunity to hear this sound and it really did disturb me at first because it isn't a sound that I was familiar with at all. I've been lucky though in that I have never heard the sounds of cats mating and had it wake me up in the middle of the night. That would be something that would probably scare me and also make me very upset all at the same time.

Hi Proffesor2010!. I don't like hearing a sound of cat when mating. They usually get up into the roof and making that sound. There are so many wild cat around my house. I hate it most when they do that in middle of the night and bother my good night sleep. I usually bring water and spray over them so they will stay away from my house.

hi professor oh yes often and it never ceases to worry me at first that a child is being abused only to realize its' two cats in heat doing their thing. As I understand it it is a rather painful ritual for the female cat and it is her that does the screaming. Yes at first its scary as it sou nds like a human baby in trouble. he

There is a big temple next to my house and there has been a cat there for a very long time. Not one but one after another. I have lost count of the number of cats that have occupied the temple premises for their generations. Caterwauling, or the cry of the cat is very common thing and i have been hearing this uncanny and eerie sound for many years espcially during the night. The mating cries of cats resembles a baby crying and initially i was caught off guard thinking that some baby was crying loudly. Later on i realized that this sound was made by 2 cats mating. At night it really sounds fearful but by now i have got used to it and it doesn`t bother me or anybody in the building where i live.

Oh yes, I have heard it. For quite a while I had no idea what was happening and I thougt an animal was in really bad trouble. It worried me a lot and as it was in the middle of the night I was scared to go out. I couldn't go back to sleep either. I wonder of lions, tigers, etc., big cats make the same kind of noise. If so, can you imagine how loud and scary that would be?

haha I used to hear this 'mating call' when I was living in the province (rural area). These cats really annoyed me when I was a kid because they always kept me and my brothers awake all night! Because of them, we would always be late for school the next morning. I remember even chasing one of those cats when I couldn't review for exams because of their irritating noise.

Haha, I've heard of this a thousand times. A lot of cats were always banging, fighting and mating in our roof. I already memorized that sound when a male cat is in heat. Yeah, it sounds like human being, most sounds like baby crying. There were times I got scared when I heard a cat sounds. I thought it was a ghost, they often do that in midnight.

oh yes. living in a flat by many houses and flats around, there's many stray cats around here and from time to time when it'd be their mating call specially in March and in summer time I hear lots of them hawling outside in late hours like 2 or three in the morning, so I'm used to that and have never been scared as I know where the noise is coming from. Even having two male cats myself they do hawl from time to time in these days when it's their mating time, so sometimes they'd wake me up in the middle of the night, but thankfully they're not very loud and usually stop it after a fe meow's lol

Yes, I have heard the mating calls of cats many times before, and they can sound eerie and most ghostly, like to beings have a conversation in a strange language sometimes. _Derek

Hi professor, That sounds quite weird i agree. At one time i almost felt like there was some baby crying in the bushes outside, late at night. LOL. Most the time you can make out it's a cat but i swear that time it was sounding quite human. If you ask me if i can bear a dog crying or a cat doing (whatever) i would go for the dog's cry.. Mostly because they are distant and thinking people say it brings bad luck really makes me think about it and get excited for nothing.
