Walking for health

I just read an article that worried me. I´m more sedentary every day that passes. The computer addiction is terrible. Today I read about an illness that had similar symptoms as Alzeimers disease and was called vascular dementia. Guess what age group is more prone to it? Mine, of course. But the good part about the article was that people who walked regularly are "less likely to develop dementia compared with their couch-potato peers." At last a good sentence, I said. So, today is my granddaughter´s birthday. She lives ay a 30 minute walk (20 for other people) from my house. That means less than five minutes by car. But today I´ll put on my Nikes and I´ll walk there. I do hope my eldest daughter brings me back though. I´d hate to walk back at night (not dangerous but eerie). Let´s start walking a bit, guys and gals! I´d hate to have to stop talking at mylot because all my friends (and myself to begin with) have our brains out of order. Take care!

Yes, we need to do physical exersize regularly to keep active and healthy. I have been doing jogging out in the park as often as I can in the evenings after getting back home from work. That is my favorite way of exersize now. That is reallt very refreshing. As one gets older, one has to change to walking.

Good for you. Walking is still one of the best ways to stay healthy. And the only thing it will cost you is a good pair of shoes. Keep up the good work. I used to be a fitness trainer at a retirement community. I did this for almost 7 years. Staying fit was a big part of my job and I loved it. I did more cardiovascular exercise before lunch time than many people would do in a week. Trying to keep up with the senior citizens who were twice my age was always fun. Now, I have to be creative, like you, and look for ways to stay fit. The weather is cooling off nicely and now I enjoy a pleasant walk at a nearby park. Once around the whole track is 2 miles, so I go for twice around and it feels great. I finally convinced my boyfriend that we should get an stationary exercise bike to add to our variety of fitness. We just got one a couple of weeks ago and we're both putting it to great use. It's nice to change things up a bit. But it's important to stay consistant. The internet is a great tool but it can also cause a lot of problems like you pointed out. Living a sedentary life can make one very sluggish and sick. Fortunately, it doesn't take much time at all to keep oneself fit and healthy. I love the last line of you post. I'm walking, cycling and otherwise staying mobile. I plan on staying around for a long, long time. You take care too.

Hi betlynfrnds...if I walk 20 minutes, around 1-2 kilometres 3 or 4 times a week, how soon can I expect to see some weight loss? I'm afraid of losing the little motivation I've managed to dredge up if I don't see a result.

Hello Ms Tickle, I know what you mean about motivation. You're definately not alone. Losing weight can be more of an art than a science. Different people will get different results. In addition to staying active physically, diet is also very important. Some people think that just because they exercise an hour or so every day, they can eat anything they want and all they want. That's not the case so be careful of what others may say to you. Moderation is essential. The schedule that you're talking about here: 20 minutes, 3 or 4 times a week is great. But I'll give you a heads up. Generally, the first 20 minutes of exercise is considered a warm up. Your body won't start to burn stored calories until after 20 minutes. A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine was telling me how she lost some of her weight from her exercise routine. She had a hard time losing the last 5 to 10 pounds so she increased the time she spent on her exercise machines from 20 to 30 minutes a day - 5 days a week. Then the weight dropped. Consistancy is the key. Always try to enjoy your walking. If you see it as more of a duty than a pleasure, you may lose interest. If you aren't seeing the results you want, increase your time by a few minutes. I've seen this to be the case many times. A client wouldn't be losing the desired amount of weight so we would increase the time on the bike or treadmill by as little as 5 minutes and that was all that was needed. Start slow, don't give up, if you miss a day or 2, don't beat yourself up, just pick up where you left off and continue on. The more you do, the better you will feel and the more you will enjoy this activity, but always listen to your body. Don't push yourself to the point where you want to quit. I wish you well!!!

I have been walking a lot more since I returned to China two months ago. I either walk or ride a bike most of the time with an occasional taxi when it is further away or if I'm going with someone else. I remember the last time I returned to America from China that I had said that I wouldn't drive again, but within weeks of my return I was driving again. I do prefer to walk. Thanks for bringing this up!

It is difficult to walk in my neighborhood here because the road is very narrow and there is no sidewalk, but it is far better than trying to use any other means of transportation.

At some countries it is more difficult to walk . I have been at some cities in the US where it is impossible to be a pedestrian. In my country we don´t have sich a problem. All streets have sidewalks.

I think walking is good for you. My family and I walk a lot. I also have a treadmill that we walk on too. I would much rather walk outside though so you can admire all the beautiful things around. Now that it is starting to turn cold here I haven't been wanting to walk as much out in the cool weather because I don't like the cold. So I guess it's time to start walking the treadmill again if it's too cold outside.

Thank you for the reminder. I am equally guilty of my sedentary life which has done injustice to my once curvy hourglass shape. No thanks to the endless surfing on the net. I think I have an overdose of the internet stuff which made me no better than a humpty dumpty. I am so contented with my present lifestyle and walking has become a burden to me. I hate it as I get breathless even after a short distance. Hopefully I can start walking again for health sake.

If you scroll up one response, there was a mylotter who is walking 10 minutes a day. That is not so much. I will do that. No use to saying one will become a Gold Medal walker. But 10 minutes? Let´s try it!

It is said that walking is the easiest exercise there is and one of the most beneficial for our health. I commend you for taking steps to begin improving your health. I would like to say that I walk as much as I should, but I know that I don't. I am pretty active at work, and I am up on my feet several hours a day. I am not a sacker, I just do not go above and beyond my normal walking at work each day as I should. I think that it is great for l of those who can ut aside the excuses, and ust get out and walk.

I did walk over 30 minutes today. I´m very proud of my achievement although it is yet to be seen if it helps as much as it says. Tomirrow I´ll take Lola for a smaller walk. She has yet to learn to behave out of the house.

That's great idea, thanks for giving it to me. Im young girl, but stay at home nearly whole day long. The one thing i go out because is shopping food. We got store close to my home, so i don't have to walk a lot, sometimes i go more times than once ... but thats not really the walking my body needs. Before when i wasn't working at home, only going to work, even with a bus, because i worked in other city, than mine, was good for me, my body could stay with good shape and i felt great. Now staying at home includes only my online working and cleaning, which is not enough. I'll try to walk in the mornings. Im sure it will be great, because the air is clean and the nature talks at this time - sunrise, not a lot of people around.

That's great! I'd like to share this to my mom. She has this attitude of walking once, twice or thrice in a year and will give you alibis like hurting foot, feet, toe, toes, ankle and a lot more. It's frustrating since getting older needed more exercise to keep you healthy. And I love this reminder, it'll keep me away from riding a bus for a short-distance destination. Thanks!

The truth is, our knees, feet and toes DU hurt. I can only walk for over 15 minutes with nikes. Real shoes are awfull for us old gals and guys. It would be nice, now that we are talking about this, to give your seat to elder peopleat a bus. This is a custom that has been lost in my country and I sometimes would LOVE aget a teen by an ear to make him get up.

I actually started walking last Friday, but the last two mornings have been bitterly cold so I thought it prudent to stay indoors. I have been furiously sweeping floors and rugs as well as vacuuming and today I had a couple of goes at mowing my weeds...I have a huge yard and the heat makes me quite breathless so I cannot just go and go and go. Like you, I really need to get busy away from the computer. Best of luck to you.

I never knew about this illness, but i am thankful that you started this topic then. I also hate walking before and i started to have flabs esp in belly and i hate this so i started to do some simple exercise and walking is the best to start with. And for a week long of walking everyday like 10 minutes it really help me to get rid of these flabs easily. Now i can say that i am almost back on with my oldself (figure) And i am happy for the result. I am still doing the walk exercise and wish to lost more weight after a month. Let's the walk and be healthy while keeping active in mylot

That is so cool that you're taking that step to get out walking! I bet she'll be happy to hear you walked there, too! It's so awesome that instead of sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself, you are getting up and doing something about it! That is very admirable. I hope you have an awesome walk!
