Now i know I'll never go. heres the news. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101109/ap_on_re_us/us_cruise_ship_fire NOT A REFERRAL for purposes of discussion. Would you go after this?

What a neat trip you have planned, Gabs. I hope all works out well. I need to poke around here on the lot and see how people are doing since I have been gone. I hope all is going well for you.

That would be my luck if i ever got to go but don't have to make a decision one way or the other because i don't see it happening. I have always thought it would be fun but after my kids went i changed my mind. They were not impressed w/their cruise at all.

Oh, I would probably go any way, but I will never be able to afford it. We get to believing that we are invincible, but we are not. I am not so much afraid of being seasick as I have heard of lots of contagious "mystery illnesses" and viruses happen on cruise ships.

Fortunately, I have never had any kind of travel sickness with flying. I have never had the chance to travel on a large ship. That would be interesting for sure, Especially if the toilets worked and we were not stranded.

I think this sounds like an interesting story to be able to tell. Probably not a lot of fun living it, but while they are having to "rough" it for a while, it sure beats the alternative (think Titanic...) I don't know if I'd mind so much since this is November, but I wouldn't even WANT to take that cruise earlier in the season, due to the heat...

I haven't seen this on the news YET but I agree! It is hard to believe something like this can happen today! WOW! However, I've never been but hope to go on a cruise one day just to see what all the hype is about. We know so many people who've been on one and they all tell us once you go, you'll want to go again. Well, when we're rich enough to afford such luxury, lol, we'll go. Besides, these days they have enough rescue boats to get us off should we ever need one. God forbid!

well they are supposed to have. so why did it take such a long hard time for this one? just obviously to many people and no for thought for generators and such.

I decided that I would stay away from cruise ships a few years ago when a virus was going around on them. They have no place to dump their garbage, medical waste or human waste. You're living on a bed of bacteria and germs when you go on a cruise. While I'm not a germophobic, I prefer to live in a reasonably clean place! Living some place like a cruise ship for more than a day is just asking for trouble. I would love to go on a one or two day cruise but no more than that!

yes one or two days would probably be good. im not sure my son would really like the idea of the disposal system, since hes a bit germaphobic but he might like a cruise anyway since he was in the navy for a few years.

It's quite common to see things go wrong on a cruise. It wouldn't stop me. I have every intention of going on a cruise somewhere, sometime. I just have to figure out how to get someone to look after my cat. I'm a little afraid of planes & flying and I really don't like flying, so a cruise is basically a must for me.

I heard something but didn't "tune in". I don't do cruises so basically don't matter to me...not to sound mean. But I hear often about things happening on cruise ships...but then again...things happen on planes and busses and cars and buildings etc. Remeber few years ago one was "quarrentined" for awhile cause some passengers had something they didn't know about or brought back with them. Don't remember the details but ...anything can happen!

I watched as daily they gave a report of what was going on. It certainly makes a person think twice about going on such a trip. I think I would pass and fly somewhere instead. That whole toilet not working thing is a deal breaker!

would have been quite stinky i think when they got through with it all. yuck. i dont like flying either. i think the sea might be a little more likely you'd survive. think i'll just stay on ground

Yes, I have heard of this happening before. Fires do happen. Those small little rooms that people are in I don't know if I could sleep comfortably or not. I get clostrophobic. But, yes, I have heard of a couple of other fires onboard cruise ships. I think it is something to think about when planning a cruise too.

I did hear about this story in the news and as much as I have always wanted to go on a cruise, this was enough to make me have to stop and think about it for a while. I'm really not sure that I would want to go on a vacation of a lifetime only to get stranded in the middle of no where without electricty or air conditioning. That would really be scary to me and now I really don't know that a cruise is something that is meant for me.

Doctors prescribe good meds for seasickness, that don't cause drowsiness. Flukes happen. But I too will not take a cruise. The thought of cramped quarters and having to wait to get my feet on land is too much! I am a turf girl too!

I am not widowed but after 27 years of marriage I can truly understand that! When and if that days come I will have to remember my adventurous single days! He is such an adventurous man I would not be able to do all the things I do now but I think I would do more than most in that position! I wonder if there are still men out there who look at women as a "roll in the hay"?

Hi bunny, Don't call me a freak but I wish I am one of those passengers there. Nothing brings me high but to experience the unusual. Being stranded on a cruise ship is something I may not forget. I have sailed on small boats and large ships suffering some inconveniences such as salt spray, sunshine, the wide open horizons, blue skies, squalls, cold rain hitting like needles on the skin, rolling waves, howling winds and fresh raw seafoods. Otherwise, the trip always end and I get home with nothing but sunburn on my skin. On one trip, abhorring the disco saloon and unable to sleep, I stayed alone standing on the foredeck gazing at the stars in the darkest of midnight and feeling like walking the seas until I saw the sunrise on the far horizon. And how I love to go back and to do it again, on a cruise ship someday, somewhere.

ha, this is interesting, I will still definitely choose to take boat, although actually I never had a chance to do so. and there is always news about disasters, and the rate of disasters in sea is far less than which of car accidents in land. Sure, you dont like ship travel is one thing, if you get sea sickness, that's another thing. but obviously, these are no directly relations with sea disasters, aren't they? just your personal dislike, just you want to prove your dislike is right.

no not trying to prove its any worse then other travel. its just that im not a very good swimmer. had a 3 scarey experiences as a child and think i could easily drown. besides, how can this happen in this day and age without it being out on a hurricane or an ice berg hit it?

I read the news about the stranded cruise ship. It is very hard to believe that it got stuck in the waters of Mexico. It must have been scary for the passengers to hear about the lack of communication. Then it must be awful that they will be taken back to California. They should get money from the cruise line so say sorry to them. I remember a whale watching trip by boat that I went on from San Pedro in Los Angeles. We didn't see any whales and just as we were about to turn back in we saw the whales. Wow! It was such an amazing and special experience that I won't ever forget. We came back into the port later than expected. I saw it get dark and I had a long walk back to the youth hostel. A cruise ship trip wouldn't be my sort of trip because I could only visit the destinations listed and I would have just one day or less in each of them. I prefer to fly to a long haul destination then travel around on local trains, buses and ferries. I enjoy staying in locally owned guest houses and when I get the chance unusual accommodation like a tree house. One day I do hope I will be able to cruise in a sail boat or motor yacht around the Galapagos Islands.

yes it sounds good to be able to visit places. but apparently not so good to just cruise by them while sleeping in a tiny room at night. your way sounds better to me.

hi bunnybon wow what a mess and all those people expecting to have fun on a cruise then stuck like that. I would have thought large cruise ships like that would have backup systems and better emergency response so that things like that could not happen., I mean they boast about how wonderfdul princess cruise ships are and all then something like a fire puts the whole ship out of commission? unbelievable.Even hospitals have better back up systems in case of emergencies. I worked nights one night in the Long Beach hospital and around one in the morning we had a 5.0 something earth quake and the electricity went out for over an hour. and right away back up generators were going and the lights were back on. there were preemies in the nursery on oxygen and needed electricity for that and some in iron lungs or on heart and lung machines all needed power at all time. a small fire should not have been able to disable a ship so badly it could not keep on its schedule.

I heard about this on tv last night, I couldn't believe it, and all they've been eating is poptarts and spam, that just doesn't sound good at all. I've thought about going on a cruise, but after hearing this, I don't think I want to now, everything is too scary to get on.

i remember a couple of years ago a cruise ship went aground in alaska.. i was like how did they do that when the captain was used to the route?!?! im scared they will sink which is why i have never gone on one!!! they seem to have had a lot of problems with people getting sick too from some contagious bug or bad food etc

OMG how awful! Did they not even think to drop anchor??!!! You would think that would have been one of the first things they did. They have so many deck hands on those big cruise ships and I am quite sure they go through all kinds of routine emergency drills. In any event, I did go on a cruise once with my parents and sister back when I was in 8th grade. I really didn't even want to go on the cruise, but of course because I was young, I was forced to go. I was so afraid I would get motion sickness even though I have never suffered from it before. I made sure to take motion sickness pills the entire trip so I was fine, but we did got through some rough waters on the trip and a large percentage of the passengers were sick to their stomachs. I just don't like the confinement of the ship. And the rooms are small, nothing like what they seemed to be on "The Love Boat". I guess unless you spend a fortune for your cruise, you are stuck in a tiny room a bit larger than a closet. Of course this was over 30 years ago, but I can't imagine the regular rooms have gotten much bigger. My husband wants us to go on a cruise, and I told him the only way I would go if it was only for 2-3 days. The seven day cruise I went on was too long for me.
