The House passed the tax cut deal and now it will sail to Obama's desk. Do you think this will help or hurt the country? Maybe help in the short term and hurt in the long term. I do worry about social security and how they will pay for this. $858 billion and it will all be borrowed. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_tax_cuts;_ylt=ApQGZu8scpyu1JQHt.4v_wis0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTNib3I1MHJzBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAxMjE3L3VzX3RheF9jdXRzBGNjb2RlA21vc3Rwb3B1bGFyBGNwb3MDMQRwb3MDMwRwdANob21lX2Nva2UEc2VjA3luX3RvcF9zdG9yeQRzbGsDZnVsbG5ic3BzdG9y So lets pull out our crystal balls. How do you think it will look this time next year then again in ten years.

I don't think you can call it a tax cut. It is only an extension of the tax bill that was already in place. Our taxes stay the same. If they had not passed this bill, everybody's taxes would have gone up January 1st. They did cut the SS taxes cut from the payroll, and upped the amount of an estate before it is taxed. But other than that, I think they did the right thing. To me, estates have already paid taxes on everything and, for the life of me, I can't figure out why the government thinks they are entitled to take another 35% (was to be 55%) tax from an estate when we die!

I agree with you Barb I believe the estate tax is one last money grab before your worm food.

You're right, this isn't a tax cut. It's an extension of the current tax levels, it's prevention of a tax HIKE. I'm glad for small favors, if it isn't passed, it's going to hurt everybody from right above middle class all the way down.

You are right, Mommyboo. But, thank goodness, it passed!! And I think they said the president will sign it one day next week. I also agree with you, laglen. They will follow us right up to the grave to get that handout! In fact, they get it after we are in the ground from the ones we leave behind, if we are fortunate enough to be in that group that has to pay. Doesn't matter to me, though. I think it's wrong for the government to take money from ANYONE'S estate! That is a second tax.

If the tax cuts had been made permanent, then I might hold out some hope that businesses would start investing, hiring people, etc. But as a business owner, I don't think I'd do that for 2 years help. What happens in two years? So, I don't think it's going to work for the Republicans; they should have waited until January and then went for the whole shibang. And I was opposed to an extension of the unemployment benefits. I'd rather see mandatory re-training or something in its place. Over the long-term, they're going to have to increase the ages for social security and medicare. There needs to be a major overhaul of these programs and it's going to be painful, but it's necessary.

You are right about the extension of the unemployment benefits. I know one person whom was let go a LONG time ago because of the position she held in the Bank, having been with them many years and was making a chunk of money - they got rid of all the people making lots of money and hired 2 in their places, making far less than the 1 person made. Anyway, she said it was more profitable for her to stay off work than try to find a job because most places where she put in thought she was overly qualified and could not pay her what she was worth. Back when I was young, you only got unemployment for a short amount of time, and you had to be hunting another job to get that!

I agree; I know a few people, myself, who aren't looking for work because "why should they, they have unemployment...". Until we say, "that's it, go back to school or find a job", I think it's going to continue. I don't know how it is in other places, but I see "Help Wanted" signs all over town. And I live in a university town. You'd think someone would want a job?

I like the "create" your own job. Who wants to work for someone else anyway? Is your soup service still going over?

The biggest thing the whole debate has exposed is the lie that the tax cuts were "for the rich". Prs. Obama and other democrats have made the case that allowing the tax cuts to end would hurt the middle class. If the tax cuts didn't help the middle class, there is no way allowing them to sunset can hurt. The fact is, the tax cuts helped most Americans... those who called it a "tax cut for the rich" were either lying, or just wrong.

Sadly the first thing that popped into my mind was "Well if we're paying less income taxes, doesn't that mean our tax refund will be less?". I mean I must admit, we could use the weekly money more than we could use the tax refund.. considering how we live all year we tend to blow our tax refund on a lot of stupid things like eating out at places we can't usually afford, or buying nice clothes we can't usually afford. Because we're so broke through out the year we rarely do anything smart with our tax money, like save it. At best we'll buy a new vehicle and get some vehicle repairs and make our bills current. Last year we got a $10,000 tax refund (having 5 kids is good for something, LOL). This year whenever we talk about our plans for our refund.. we're already talking as if it's going to be another $10K, which is should be... but man it will hurt if it goes down too much after that! Though I do hope these tax cuts help the economy. More money in our pockets means more spending at local stores etc.. which should hopefully lead to new jobs, which would lead to more tax payers and less feeding off unemployment.. with any luck!

It would depend on how much you earn, but it is possible.

I heard someone on the radio today say that the take home pay could go up as much as $2,000 a year for workers. I don't know if that's the top or the bottom of the board. I know I have a daughter who could use all the income she could get each week!

maybe this will interfere with the state, because of which the state had the money if not from taxes from the public budget. and if it will be done then the state will incur a loss for the country itself.
