Here's my last plant this year I planted, hopefully. It's a Roma tomato plant. This will be used specifically for salsa and tomato paste canning I may do this summer/fall. Do you can your own grown vegetables? What do you make/can? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I've never tried canning, but I freeze a lot of our vegetables. Tomatoes I just cut into hunks and freeze that way (shaking them every so often so I don't get one enormous lump of tomato all frozen together), and then I use them in things like pasta sauce and chilli in the winter.

So when you can them, what do you use? Glass jars? I don't think people do that much in the UK any more, though I know my grandad used to keep his plums that way. My sister in law makes a lot of jam (you'd probably call it jelly or maybe preserves) - we have loads of apple, plum and pear trees, so she has some of our fruit and we get some of her jam in return.

Yes, I do it the old fashioned way with the boiling water, jars etc. A lot of work but worth it as most stuff stays good for a year or more this way. Jam and jelly are different actually. Jam is a thick fruit whereas jelly is more runny with chunks of fruit in it. I make strawberry and rasberry jelly and jam from my garden. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

The last one, I doubt it, you will come up with more. lol... My boyfriends mother who is in Arkansas usually grows a lot of veggies and does can a lot of them in glass jars. She likes to share them with all her lady church companions. When we go down to visit she always shares some with us as well. We will be going down later this summer so we will be bringing some with us. It must be a pleasure to sit out in your garden and watch all the veggies grow.

I used to can quite a bit, and I do anticipate that I will do so this year. I usually freeze things, but I hope to make pickles this year, and maybe pickled pepper. I have a recipe somewhere for zucchini relish and for something that my friend called Mexican Table Sauce. I would make that sauce and then sometimes change the herbs around and make Italian dipping sauce. Both are tomato based and are similar to a chunky salsa. I think I only planted one Roma myself this year.

My Roma produced more than anything else, I think. My son in law canned twelve pints while we were in Minnesota.

That is a good idea. We made some salsa last year and it turned out really good. We plan to do that this year too. We use peppers, onion, tomatoes and salsa mix to make ours.

I must have made 20 quarts of strawberry jelly from my graden last year. Hope to have just as good a year this time too. I made a lot of rasberry jelly and glaze also last year. Mine didn't last long as I gave most away and finished off what I kept in a few months time. I do have one gallon baggie of rasberry glaze left though. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I'd like to someday. I remember for awhile my grandparents grew squash, tomatoes, and lettuce. They were all so good!

My goodness.. I am wondering what Zone you are in...I am still looking at a minimum of two weeks before I can put in any of the "nightshade" family plants. Usually around the 3rd week in May, here in B.C., Canada, near the 49th! I would love to say...I have every plant in! I DO plant tomatoes, of every form, but strictly "heritage" varieties...I have found a wonderful website, with just heritage seeds, and they group their seeds to your growing zone! I have totally fallen in love with "tomatillo's", which I make a "salsa verde" with home-grown onions/garlic..and demolish it with everything! I do not grow things like carrots, cabbage, corn for the simple reason, I have limited water..and that produce is very in-expensive here, so I concentrate on Kales, lettuces, spinach, garlic, squashes, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. Things I need when the "salad" mood strikes...LOL!

hi when I was doing my own cooking I often boutht some Roma tomatoes just for the deep rich flavor and added one chopped upto myh barellis spahgetti sauce with basil and garlic also I added more chopped basil and garlic as I wanted to make that sauce my own. here I do no cooking and not sometimes eating the crap they serve at times. roman have that rich flavor no other tomato comes close to and I love most kinds ot tomatoes in fact I am tomato hungry. I did notice lately we have been having more veggie soup and one thats so good has big chunks of tomato in it.I used to help can veggies and fruits both when I was in my own house. we had so much zuccini and I froze a lot ot it.the soup cook is just really excellent and I often have two bowlfuls to make up for a poor entree.as long as I get my veggies I am getting some vitamins and of course I do take a multi vitamin every day too.I think the Romas are some of the prettiest of tomatoes with that odd shape that they have and the deep rich red.

I've planted some Roma as well. I've put in around 200 tomato plants, so about half of those would be Roma. Although we'll eat and share a lot of our harvest fresh, I do make tomato sauces and also preserve some in oil and dehydrate some. Tomatoes are one of the few veggies which I'd can as I don't have a pressure canner, but I bottle lots of fruits and also make jams, chutneys and other goodies.
