When do you start mowing your grass after the winter has gone?

Now that winter is over and the summer is here ut's time for the grass to start growing again. It doesn't take long for the grass to take off and before you know it the yard looks like a jungle. When do you start to mow after the winter? do you wait until summer or do you start mowing as soon as the grass starts to grow again?

We have pasture not lawns. And this year I am very glad, it's been so wet no one has been able to mow, as soon as it drys out all the lawns in town are goin to be a mess.

@SAvyPat--llamas graze, right? Do you have anything else that consumes your pasture?

We do mow our hay fields but the Llamas and the deer take care of the rest.

Thank you for responding. Whether you have pasture or lawns, it can still be quite a chore to tackle.

You wait until the ground is thawed and the grass is growing. You would have to check and see what zone you are in and then see when professional mowing companies are beginning their season. I would think that you would start mowing when the grass is growing again but I would check first and see.

Depends on alot of factors. When the earth thaws after winter, how much sun it gets, etc.

Isn't it funny how the grass will grow at a different rate in different areas of the country. Ig uess it all depends on what knid of weather you are having at the time. thanks for your contribution.

Personally since we live in Tacoma, WA which is like 40 mins from Seattle, we have a lot of rain here during the Spring so you have to start mowing at least by April or you will have a jungle for sure. It can be a lot of time and work to keep your yard looking nice so when it rains a lot doing it more than once a week is sometimes required. Having your yard looking nice for others is a good thing.

A lot of times our yard can be the frst thing that someone will notice about us. it is a reflection on how we live in how well we maintain our yards. Our yard is a part of us to show the world. Taking pride in that is worth the effort.

Never, if I can get away with it! We have a lot of land, and a lot of grass. We strim it as we require a clean piece (for tents for instance) or to cut hay around now.

When you have a lot of land to mow it csn be a burden. it can seem like a job that never ends. thanks for the response.

When it starts to grow and looks unkept, that is usually when it starts getting mowed here. If we wait too long, it is a lot harder to mow the first time.

Sometimes it seems that the first mow of the season is the hardest one to get by. after that it is smooth sailing or out of control. thanks for your views.

You know, I am glad that I do not have to worry about all that. I live in New York City, there is no grass in front or in back of my house. All I do is hose down the concrete. Maybe if I want grass, I could just paint the concrete green. I do know that when the grass starts growing, you should not wait until it's a jungle. When it starts getting long, just mow it and try to keep up with it until winter.

Thank you for the response. i am sure that just because you have no grass to mow you are burdened with other things. Mowing the grass can seem minor compared to so many other worries of the world. I agree that the grass should not wait to become a jungle. that will just bring more challenge than is necessary.

I usually wait to mow until the grass is actively growing and green, and the lawn's dry enough so I don't make ruts in the lawn. Once it gets a few inches up, it's time for a mowing. I live in northern Ohio, and if I waited until summer to mow, it would be too tall to even get a mower through it. Here, in the spring, we often have to mow it twice a week until later in June or July when it slows down it's growth some. This year, we had the rainiest May in our areas history, so it's been a real challenge to get out there and mow even though it's growing so fast. The lawn is like walking on a sponge lol.

It seems that the grass just lays there waiting or else it grows faster than you can mow it. it can be hard to keep up with it sometimes. Thanks for the response.

I generally wait until there is not likely to be a ground frost. Grass begins to grow at 45 deg F (and only quite slowly then). If it is damaged by cutting just before a frosty night, it takes it a lot longer to recover because the growing point (which is in the centre of the plant) is damaged and exposed.

Sometimes i think we can just get in too much of a hurry to do our yardwork just because we can. we don't always realize the damage we could do. thanks for your comments.

Spring comes earlier here, I guess. I try to put it off until Easter in case I want to hide eggs, but usually by the end of April I am mowing. Right now it looks like we need to mow twice a week.

By Easter time, all i could see was swampy land. At least you had something you could mow. i would have been happy for it. Take care and happy mowing everyone!

My lawn has been mowed several times already...the next door neighbor takes care of doing my lawn work....so the minute it gets tall enough...then it gets mowed!

It's nice to see that you have such a kind and generous neighbor. it is not everyone that would take care of your lawn work for you.

Having your yard looking its best can make you feel good about your home. Even if you can't do it yourself, it is still a comfort to see it done.

hi, for me,i will start to mow my grasses when i see that grass is now ugly and more taller, because taller grass also not good because it will looks like intersperse,so its better to mow or to reduce there height.

There's not really a difference if you're worried about damaging the mower, I would mow as soon as there is enough grass for you to consider mowing.

Sometimes the grass is ready to mow before we are. If you take good care of your mower, you should have no problems in keeping up.
