'Help! help!' -my pants calling 911!

So I just move to a new job which is closer to home. To save on gas, and to get some exercise, I have started walking to and from home. As I was walking home yesterday, I got a call from the police! It seems that my phone just called 911! They wanted to know if I was alright. So, I explained that I didn't need help, and I apologized for any inconvenience. I said sorry for tying up the emergency line, and I promised them that my pants would refrain from calling for help from then on. Has this ever happened to you? How did you explain your way out of it? Was it really my pants that called for help? Or was it my finger-eleven?

that sounds quite strange.it never happens to me as I've got a flip phone.maybe your pants are calling for help 'cause it just don't want to walk any more(quite interesting).but it must be very embarrassing to explain all that to the police.

I think you're right. I think it has gotten so used to sitting inside the pocket being lulled to sleep while I drive. Thanks mrrabbit.

I've butt dialed people, but never 911. usually I just "butt photo" the inside of my pocket...

Haha! I've done that a few times! I always thought that it was just the phone taking a pic of inside my pocket to remind me that I didn't really have any money. Thanks.

Oh this is a lovely story. Actually, I do it all the time so my friends ignore it. My BB is so precious to me and I do not always remember where I have put it. so, (don't tell anyone) I keep it in my bra - always. I keep in on vibrate so when it vibrates I retrieve it quite hastily. But I still manage t call many persons daily that I did not intend to call

I am sorry but I do not know how to explain it in any simpler way

That's an obvious disadvantage for me! As my finger-eleven might be the one calling for help in my case, you might have two entities in your case trying to call people. Thanks cynthiann.

Hi! That is really strange, but it happened to me too, but I have never call the police but my phone accidentally dialed someone phone number in my contact when I put it in my pocket. And the call was lasted a few minutes where my friend was wonder my did I call but never talk to her, she keep talking in the phone, but I did not answer her at all. And when I realized it, she have already put down the phone, So, what I did was to call her another time and tell her sorry about it. And she just laugh at me.

Hello yspmyl. I think that is really embarassing. Good thing that it is your friend. It would have been doubly embarassing if it were somebody you didn't know entirely. Thanks for the response.

Hi bounce lol @ finger-eleven! No I have not dialed 911, but have accidentally dialed people I should not have and while I was at a club onetime have a few drinks my entire tipsy moment was being listened too. Yikes, luckily the person did not mind and apparently not as they heard the whole time, but since then I have learned to lock my phone so that it does not happen again. Glad to hear you have a new and different job, and hope all is going well with it.

Once when we tried through landline my wife the call wrongly went to 911. they enquired what was the problem about and subsequently we had to explain that the call went inadvertantly. Thereafter my wife hesitates to some number near 911. have a good day.

Yes I think so too! That the police deserve appreciation for contacting me right away. They did tell me that they have to keep the line open for real emergencies, but I appreciate their call, just in case it was my own real emergency. Thanks ravisivan.

my sister in law had this happen twice but not from her pants, it was her two very young at the time daughters playing with the phone. they live in the country and all of a sudden, there was a knock at the door.

That's a bit embarassing! In my case, it was still manageable as it was just a phone call. I think it's different when they go knocking on your door. I hope your sister in law was able to weasel her way out of that situation. Thanks.

My cat once managed to call the emergency out of hours vet from the stored memory on my handset. How clever is that?!

Haha GreenMoo! That is indeed very clever! Mayb your cat was not feeling well, and figured it would be easier to call the vet directly, than bothering telling you. Thanks.

They will come after you too if you don't answer the phone or if they have a "bad feeling." I haven't had any experience with it, but I knew someone that had a child playing with the phone that called on accident. They tried to call back and it was busy..before they knew it..there was a couple of ploice cars out front. I felt bad for them but I couldn't help but laugh.

Yes, removed from it, it does sound a bit funny. But I'm sure it wasn't that funny when the police was already at the front door. Or when you start paying for the charge/fine for having the police come to your house. Thanks Jen.

Sometimes you can pocket dial places.... Even I have done that too with my blackberry but always managed to disconnect before a dispatcher answered. Thank goodness as that would be pretty embarrassing! Ha. Congrats on the new job, btws, and good for you for walking to and from work - saves money, good exercise & helps the environment a little. Kudos!

My phone is a blackberry too, so maybe it really does have a history of pocket dialling. Thanks! And it does feel great walking to and from work, specially with the nice weather. I just don't know if I'd go on walking when it starts getting cold.

I've never had the experience of accidentally making an emergency call from having my phone in my pocket, but there have been plenty of times that the button gets pressed that will take the phone online and that ends up costing a pretty good chunk of change. The only 911 experience that I've ever really had was when my daughter was spending the night with her grandparents last year and saw Kevin on Home Alone call 911 and she decided to see what happened if she did it. So, my mother-in-law got a call back from emergency dispatch to find out if everything was okay because they had a hangup call from her number.

I think that's about the same! I think that dispatch don't necessariy discriminate on a hang up. It could still be a real emergency that's why they call. Thanks.

This can be an embarrassing situation to have to deal with. it sounds like you might have to find a new place to carry your phone. you don't want to be accidentally making phone calls that you don't need.

It's not only embarassing, it could also get expensive if ever the police did come to me, and then find out that it was a false alarm. Good thing I was able to explain that it was just an accident. I think I just need to make sure that it is alwas locked before I put it in my pocket. Thanks.

That has never happened to me, and i never ever want that to happen too. Some police are really strict and they treat it as prank. I ever felt tempted to try when i'm young, because i want find out if i'm able to get away with it. Then again, i'm scare the police would trace me via my phone, so i back out of it. In singapore, calling the police unncessarily warrants a fine or maybe detention.

Hopefully they understood that it was just an accident that my phone dialled 911. As far as I know, there is also a charge or a fine here, but I think it only happens when the police do come. Thanks for the response.

I have never butt-dialed the police before. I've always butt-dialed my friends and family but never the police.

Hello AmourHelen. I bet you never hear the end of it, when you do finally get to see your friends and talk about the 'butt-dialing'. Thanks.

Yes, I've taken as few weird photos too! Probably dialed the time and other services a few times. But I make sure that single key speed-dials aren't activated! 911 doesn't exist here - it's 166.

Hello petersum. It's just weird that all with all that cramped space inside my pocket, it still found a way to dial 911. Maybe if I was walking in your place, it would dial 166 instead. Thanks.
