Spending less money

In my home country there is a recession on at the moment. Food and drink prices keep going up. Fuel costs have gone up considerably. Petrol for running a car costs a lot lately. Most people are finding a way to spend less money. One lady I know is letting her family eat pasta every evening. One man I know is walking to work instead of driving his car. One of my friends is letting her teenage daughter do beauty work on her instead of visiting a salon. I was talking to a lady I know and her friend just gave birth to a baby boy. She shopped for gifts at a one pound shop and said she had got many bargains. Have you found any ways to spend less money? Do you know anyone that is a big spender? How could he or she save money? Which free activities or low cost do you like from visiting a library, walking along a beach or something different?

Hi Maxine, I have been trying to spend less money for a long time. But I still want a good quality of life so I have had to use my head to think up about basically not throwing away. I cut on electricity bills by turning off lights when I am not in a room and placing energy saver lights in almost all my house (I have the old ones by my computer and at my night table as I like the light better). I almost never use can for cooking and soak my dry legumes (I soak and cook a kilo and then freeze what I will not use). I have a pressure cooker to save on gas and time. I started a vegetable garden to have some home grown veggies for free. I donĀ“t water the plants in containers with a hose, but fill a jar and pour the exact amount of water they need. The plants have thanked me for that too. I never throw away leftovers but make another dish with them. I wear warm clothes in Winter and use less heating. I could go on Have a nice day!

Hi Marguicha. I like the way that you have cut down on your electricity bill. I keep meaning to monitor how much electricity I am using. I get my gas bill at the same time as my electric bill. It is wonderful you have a vegetable garden and you don't waste water with your watering them. In my home country some have a meter saying how much they use and others pay according to the size of their home.

we visit the library every week and also shop at thrift stores. my favourite activity is to sit in the shade and read a good (free from the library of course) book.

Thrift stores can have some fantastic bargains. I am delighted that you visit your local library so often.

We've been trying to spend less money also. I print and clip as many coupons as I can use. I also buy cheaper foods and stuff that is on sale. We don't eat all pasta because i'm worried my family wouldn't get enough nutrients. There is a show on tv called extreme couponing where people go into the store and spend a few hundreds on groceries, but till they use all their coupons, they only spend a few dollars out of pocket. I wish I were organized enough to do that. We also are doing local stuff for vacation this year. A few miles out the road is a state park that has a little beach for the kids to swim and build sand castles. We also have some smaller amusement parks that aren't too expensive.

I go to a supermarket and they give coupons to get people to spend more on their next trip there. They give a reward card to spy what the customer is purchasing. I like the idea of collecting coupons from magazines and leaflets. I remember taking my baby daughter to be weighed and I got about 20 coupons for money off my favorite soy drink. I hope that you will enjoy visiting the state park and your kids will have fun on the beach for your vacation.

I am frugal everyday even it there isn't a recession....do I want it or do I need it. That's my theory when I go shopping. I do once in a while really treat myself. When I buy something big it's because I saved for it. I however am single so like my costs are way below what a family would need.

I like your theory. "Do I want it" and "Do I need it". I find myself buying garden books to get more knowledge at the moment. It is great that you save to get a big cost item. It feels right to save hard to get something special.

We have done lots to cut spending. We plan all of our shopping trips so that they happen when we are out doing other things. I normally combine my OB appointments with my monthly shopping trips to a store that is the next town over. We don't go out to eat or to movies. We did have a Netflix account but we stopped it and now just rent from RedBox. For entertainment we really just stay home and entertain ourselves or visit family. Right now in NC it is extremely hot or we would go to the park or to the local trails at the state park. I am 20 weeks pregnant and I cannot stand the heat these days so trail hiking is out for me. We garden, work in the yard and just stay close to home to save money.

It is lovely that you are 20 weeks pregnant. Gardening is a superb idea. I like the way you cut down on shopping trips. I think many people have subscriptions they don't use and you did well to cancel your Netfix account.

"Eat/drink less, but eat/drink the best", that's the best motto. Your body is your shrine, without good health it's bye bye, really!. Cut on waste, stop bad habits, exercise, being happy is a good medicine too. More of GOOD habits will make you extra money, and less of BAD habits will save you wasting money. Keep good company, keep your lifestyle simple, take up voluntary work, make your presence here count.

There's a recession going on here in my country too. What my boyfriend and I do to save money is use coupons! We use them at the grocery store, restaurants, and events. We also are being more careful about our shopping habits for food: since we paid some large bills last week, we are short on cash this week. So we're having a homemade pizza (2 meals) and eggs this week.

My husband and I really are trying to save money whenever can, as the recession certainly is affecting us. We do try to watch what we spend. Wherever we can cut our spending we'll definitely try and do it in a heart beat. It's definitely not easy for anyone, but we're certainly trying and doing the best we can.

It's the same here. Nothing seems to be giving where this economy is concerned...they keep saying it is getting better though..lol There are some free outdoor events here to choose from as far as doing things on a small budget. I live very close to the mountains and lakes. Hiking, fishing, swimming are some summer options. There is a movie in the park here every Friday night for those who don't mind braving the crowd. Libraries are a great alternative too. There is the option of checking out movies at the local library here too. I'm not sure that there is anyone I know right now that is a big spender..they are all nervous.

That recession you have there, we are also experiencing here. And everone here too have had to look for ways to save a little money. In my case, I took a job closer to home. Instead of 40-45 minute drive everyday, I only drive 2 minutes to work. That would save me a lot of money on gas(petrol). And just recently, I got myself a bike. I would just be biking to work so I wouldn't have to fill up my tank all the time.

We have to admit that everybody around the world is affected by the rising prices of petroleum products, thus triggering the increase in other commodities too. Here in our country, electricity is costly. So, it's one cost that we all try to save. Our laundrywoman, has been restricted from having the water just flow freely while she washes the clothes, because it is run by electricity. Ironing of the clothes is done by the laundrywoman the day after she washed the clothes and it's done to be able to iron all that was washed. We seldom iron our housewears anymore to save on electricity. I think , it is electricity that we can cut on cost mostly.

Hi, maximax, the price rise also occured in my country, compares before, the daily necessities' price enhanced generally, as a example, the price of many kinds of fruits rose more than double, etc, which influence our life more or less, however, not many people around me spend less money...and, in my view, you can do more outdoor activities almost no cost, like climbing, or watch movies at home instead of in a cinema...well, wish you all the best and god bless you...

Hi maximax, we people in INDIA also are going through price hikes on most of the basic things. To cope up with i have tried various activities like i have make a habit of going office in public transport instead of my own car. I have cut down the bills of telephone.I have limited going out for shopping & eating outside.I have cut down number of tea in a day.I have made electricity bills cut down by always remember to switch of lights & fans when no one is there in the room.I have left buying branded products like shoes, clothings as these are more costlier.

hi! we can do lot of things to spent less money, now a days the recession was really affecting all over the world even here in middle east country, i thought we would not be affected because this country was source of oil, but i was wrong because day by day the groceries, food, houses were getting increases...well because most of the products was exported from another which was affected by recession...no wondered Actually there are many ways to spent less, yah i know some people are really big spender like the rich people here, the king, and middle class people, because they don't care about the money all they know was to spent money whether expensive or not, we cannot blame them because you know they were rich people... Well for myself what i did to spent less was i always went to sale stores or supermarkets like 70% sale to 50% sale, if not i would not buy, for our houses we choose a small rooms so we can save more because you know we are foreigners here , we would not stayed here for a long time, we just came here for worked....well for the gasoline nothing to worried about it because the gasoline are very cheap here, and also the car...by the way there are no taxes here that's why you can save money...but still some changes happened...prices were getting increased..

I think most of the world is feeling the pinch right now. Here, prices have risen almost dramatically over the past few months. I've always been frugal, but have recently been "tightening my belt" even more. For instance, this morning I was hanging clothes out on the line and the clothesline broke! (With a full load, I might add). Anyway, I scrounged around and found an old phone line that I had thought to give away but hadn't yet. I had to tie in a piece from the broken line, but there was enough to replace it and get my laundry hung back up to dry. The laundry I did was on a wringer washer that I bought for $100. It uses much less water, detergent and electricity than an automatic washing machine. Part of the laundry that I did included handkerchiefs, which I use instead of disposable tissues. I made most of them from a sheet that was worn out. The detergent I used was a free sample I got through the mail.

It's hard but, generally I find I don't mind saving for one big thing than have loads of little things - for example I like to have my holidays or trips than loads of days out! However I am actually doing better than I ever was due to paying off debts so I have to admit I have not felt the crunch as bad as some may have done and I am grateful for that x

I have known several people also who are being practical these days. In my opinion its not bad at all to do things you can do by yourself. I don't ask other people to do my manicure and pedicure. Everyday chore is basically manage also single handedly so I think I save a lot here. For me, its just good management. I can't think of any big spenders yet, but for the sake of the future, let's not overdo everything. Buy the food that we just need. Use up only things necessary. Think of others too. Be mindful and don't let money slave you. Have a nice day!

There are many people who act like they are untouchable, that they will never know what is like to have some level of financial burden. They are people who think that they money will burn a hole through their pocket if they don't spend it right away. Anything they save is just enough to pay the bills, and even some months, they are really pushing that fact. They spend money that they expect, but they do not know that is for sure. They are the types of people who rack up massive credit card bills that may some day turn into massive credit card debts. The easiest way to save money, is to just stay home at least four days of the week, if not more. If people leave their house, they are bound to be more likely to spend a lot of money, going to places. Do they really need to go there? Of course they do not, but with some people, it is not a case of what they need, but rather a case of what they want to do. They are going to want to do a lot of things like they always did and thus old habits are hard to break. Once a big spender, always a big spender in many ways.

The only thing that will help me a lot on spending less is eating less food. It will likewise help me reduce weight. So, instead of eating too many foods, I only eat the healthy ones. Also, when buying something, I prefer the cheap ones but of course the one with quality. I go for wholesale rather than retail because it can save me double. And when browsing the internet, instead of looking through some nonsense sites, I just spend it here in mylot. Thus, making lot of earnings, likewise enjoying and getting much information.

I am really thinking a lot of ways to save money because life is so hard these days. We don't use our rice cooker anymore to save some electricity, we limit our habit of eating inside, this opening of classes, I recycle some of my daughter's notebook, sew it and she used it instead of me buying new notebooks for her.
