Of kids, and zombies, and gravy, and being gross-out!

Being a zombie and eating - Zombies and what kids eat

My kids are currently into Plants vs. Zombies, so this topic always seem to be in the center of conversations all the time. Even during meals! Last night at dinner, the kids with their cousin kept on and on about how cool the zombies are, and how they could be the zombies, and how they could eat a lot of brains, and arms, and legs, etc. This over dinner without the least bit being fazed about the connection between them eating regular food, while them talking about eating body parts. But when I put the gravy on the table, which I’ve mistakenly prepared with too much water making it a little soggy (my fault), they all cried out ‘Oh! Gross!’ Huh?! Are your kids like these? Do they have a good concept of which is gross, and which is not? Or are they like mine, that when it comes to their video games, nothing else is more enjoyable to talk about (even if it does involve eating human parts)?

My kids went through the period where they were both really addicted to Plants vs. Zombies as well. However, I don't think that they ever went to the extent of talking about eating body parts. Instead, what I really remember them doing was that they would pretend that one of the kids was the Peashooter and the other was a Zombie and they were constantly making the shooting sounds at each other. As far as their concept of what is gross, they've always been right about what is gross and what is not.

My kids do that as well! Pretend one is a peashooter, and the little one as the zombie! Sometimes they even do the sound when they are in the toilet, and call themselves 'pee-shooters' instead! Thanks.

My boys haven't really gotten into grossness or anything. They like super heros and war type games where you shoot each other up. There's some blood and stuff when they shoot each other.. but no brains or eating limbs or anything like that. Now it may sound weird that I'm okay with shooting type games.. but wouldn't buy those gross zombie type games for my kids. I guess everyone's preference is different.

Yeah.. those are the types my kids like.. Call of Duty, Rainbow 6.. that sort of stuff. But I guess that's mainly because my husband likes them too, and he plays them with the kids. The oldest like sports games also. Other than that they play like character type games of whatever character they like, such as super heroes, Scooby Doo, Diego, Harry Potter, Star Wars.. etc.

Actually, my kids also have some 'Call of Duty' games which also show some shooting, and some blood. These games are more realistic, and the kids don't like it as much. The zombie-thing are mostly cartoon, so I guess that's why they like it. Thanks.

Haha! Yes! And sometimes they talk as if there is no other people on the table, not even grown ups. Thanks.

It's funny what kids can determine as gross or cool. Mine used to be like that when they were younger. Zombies have been an all time big deal I guess..lol. It would be fun to stick a couple of barbie legs out of that gravy before you serve it just to see what they would do My girls have a better concept of gross now than what they used to. It gets better

I think if my kids saw a couple of legs in the gravy, they wouldn't flinch, and say it is really cool! But I don't dare do that as I'm sure it would blurry the line between eating time and play time. Thanks Jen!

Hello, I heard of the game Plants vs Zombie but I never played it before. Why do plants fight zombies? Do you know? The whole concept seems weird to me. I'm glad to hear your kids are having fun playing the game. Your children sound like they have great imaginations too.

The object of the game is for the zombies to eat your brains. You are inside the house and the zombies try to come in. You in turn put in plants to fight of the zombies. There's a squash that stomps off zombies, walnuts that are for defences, mushrooms and pea (shooters) and cacti that throw projectiles to kill the zombies. Thanks for the response.

Nope yours are not any different as I remember that mind found a great many things "gross", then they moved on to the infamous word "lame". lol Although mine were not into much video gaming as it was not allowed until they were teenagers. So probably just a "kid thing".

This reminds me, that kids are a bit funny that way. They would find a word that they may find funny or interesting (or they just may like), and keep on using it. My kids have gone through the "lame" phase already. Currently, they are fond of "fail". If I screw up on something, they would say, 'that was a fail!'. Thanks.

No, they don't say 'loser', if they beat somebody in their games, they'd just say "I own you!"

I do not care what the shrinks say, video games warp kids minds. They spend too much time in a three dimensional fantasy world that is too realistic. Their minds have not developed enough to fully pull out of that world and back into the real world and then know which is which. It takes until a kid is over 21 to fully comprehend what is what and that is a really mature kid. All things in moderation. Video games should be closely monitored by parents. I do not care how mad the kids get. A family is a dictatorship, not a democracy.

Although I run my kids like a dictator too, I do give them some time to play video games. I've more or less accepted that (making) video games is actually a good career choice for the future, and if imagination is what fuels it, then maybe I'd allow a little bit of it. But you're right. Everything in moderation! Thanks.

I have not really noticed this with my grands. They are not allowed video games and tv is monitored. But my GS is a bot obsessive compulsive about things. Actually his Dad, my son, was the same but when he was little the term was not invented So with him, things have to be done a certain way or it is 'gross'. for example if he has a sandwich then the crusts must be neatly cut off and the sides of the bread straight and then when it is quartered you feel that a ruler should be used as it has to in exact quarters. and whatever you do - do not cut his sandwich into triangles as that would be worse than 'gross'. Aren't they amazing

Oh yeah! Kids are amazing that way. It's like my mac n cheese. My son doesn't like anybody preparing his mac n cheese as it just doesn't taste the same as dad's mac n cheese. If anybody eles prepared it, 'It's gross!'. Thanks cynthiann.

Hello jaynell. I've been drawn to it too! I just hate the bungee-zombies, they tend to mess up my uniform rows of plants. Thanks and welcome to myLot!
